Healer's Quest is Greenlit !
Healer's Quest is a lighthearted RPG in which you play solely as the healer of a ragtag bunch of unfocused, greedy and highly amoral adventurers. The only match to their (very lacking) skills is their lousy temperament. They will rush head-first into desperate combats, fall into the most obvious traps, get cursed, poisoned, paralysed, vampirized, or – even – killed. It is up to you to ensure they will endure the most grievous wounds and survive their ordeals, in spite of their cripling noobishness.
You are their only hope. You are... their healer !
Healer's Quest comes with a major twist : you solely play as the healer! It implies that all the other characters will fight on their own, your main goal being to keep your allies up on their feet by casting a wide range of helpful spells.
Seems easy enough?
Combat is real-time and frantic, there are many abnormal statuses to take into account, your mana gauge depletes rapidly, and most importantly... your allies suck really badly! Without your help, your team will be wiped out in just a few seconds.
A customizable healer
Healer's Quest comes with advanced character customization options which are rarely seen in 2D games. Among many other elements, you will be able to define for example your hair and skin colors by using sliders.
After naming your character, you will have to choose his karma : Good, Evil, or Victim. Each karma comes with a unique set of karma powers, and has a major impact on the way your character behaves. An Evil karma litterally means your character wants to destroy the world, while a victim karma will result in your teammates making fun of you all day long.
Cast your spells
Casting spells is the primary way in which you will help your team to be victorious in combat phases. There are 18 unlockable spells in the game, classified into 3 schools : White Magic, Buff Magic and Mana Recovery.
This is where things get hairy! Each spell has its own mind-blowing skill tree, allowing you to customize it to your play style by boosting its performances in multiple ways. You can also choose to learn new passive abilities or active powers. All spells have secret skills which requires you to upgrade another spell to a certain level in order to be unlocked, creating powerful synergies between them.
There are 8 abnormal statuses that you will have to deal with. To give a few examples Vampirism will make an ally unhealable for a few seconds, Poison will make you lose life over time, Paralysation will stop all the victim's movements and Imp will reduce the victim's size, making him receive more damage and deal less damage.
Your teammates are only interested in dealing damage, so they will let you handle their equipment. Healer's Quest has 100 unique items such as the Ring of Stupidity, the Rat-Slayer or the Gentleman's Amulet. Each items gives its owner new abilities or stats. Find secret chests, loot enemies and complete secondary quests to get the full collection.
Short and funny dialogs
While Healer's Quest is definitely a scenaristic game, the dialogs are kept short and funny. I don't want you to get bored with long dialogs and I believe I have found a good balance between storytelling and rythm.
The Healer (yourself) :
A young boy whose main occupation is to do the dishes in his father's tavern. Bored of his miserable life, he's lucky enough to find a magical wand which grants him awesome healing powers. He's finally ready to change his life, go on an adventure and become the hero he's always dreamed of being...
But when you are the healer, you can't be the hero on your own.
You need teammates!
Tanky the Knight :
Tanky is the self-proclamed leader of the team. The King asked him to get rid of the evil dragon, so he's trying to find some nice people to help him out. Being a Knight is about accepting every random quest people can throw at you anyway.
Grumpy the Barbarian :
While Tanky will argue that Grumpy's in fact not a barbarian, but a lumberjack, he kind of fulfills the barbarian's role in the team : dealing tons of damage, receiving tons of damage, being a nuisance, etc.
Darky the Sorcerer :
Darky tells everyone that he's the most powerful sorcerer in the whole kingdom, but the team still has to see if his skills live up to that claim. He usually discards all criticism, arguing that he keeps his most powerfull spells for later on (when there will be gorgeous girls looking at him).
Count Rupert von Leetenchtein :
His name was too long, so the other party members decided to rename him Beauty. He's using a bow and arrows with relative skills, but his allies still don't like to stand before him on the battlefield.
I'm Pablo Coma, a thirty-ish year old game developer and music composer from Belgium. I'm creating every part of Healer's Quest on my own and after work hours.
My favourite activities are creating stuff (mostly video games and music) and playing with my children Léo and Alice who the game is dedicated to.
As a day-job, I've been working in the Smurfs' Studio for the past 11 years, as a graphical artist, music composer and game developer. Today I'm mainly working on Smurf video games, either licensed or created internally by our team.
And if you're wondering if I already released a game in the past, the answer is yes. Healer’s Quest is actually based (basic idea, characters and some assets) on a mobile game called « Healer Quest : The N00b Wand » which I released in June 2015. While the names are quite close, I wanted them to be different for a good reason : they aren’t the same game. « Healer Quest : The N00b Wand » had no inventory, no character customization, no karma, no world map, no interactive dialogs, no skill trees, simpler animations, a very basic experience system, much less content due to memory usage and a simpler storyline. Many new or different gameplay mechanics have been (and will be) added or deeply modified, such as the basic « Heal » spell which has nothing to do with its mobile counterpart. The list could go on and be very long, but I think you get the point : they are completely different games. And my goal is to make them even more different in the future by adding tons of content in Healer’s Quest.
Since July 2014 I've been working on this game alone, after work-hours and without any funding. My full-time day job doesn't leave me much time to work on the project as I have to travel 240 km per day to get there. Even though I'm sometimes able to work in the train, these aren't the best work conditions to develop a game. Now that I have a polished playable demo, I feel confident to share the game with you, and ask for the Kickstarter community's help.
While working alone allows for complete artistic freedom, the lack of in-depth feedback from other people may hurt the project. That's one of the main reasons I have finally decided to share my work with you. So please, don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have something to say about Healer's Quest.
On a financial level, the idea is to get just enough funding to make a big push in the game's development and deliver an alpha version of the completed game as soon as possible. Funds raised through Kickstarter will mostly be used to get days-off from my work (around 60 of them) and ensure the game will be finished before the end of the year.
Reaching stretch goals would be extremely useful, allowing me to add much more content and to keep up a good pace in the polishing phase.

Risks and challenges
It's obvious that developing a game alone is something very difficult to achieve. It demands at least skills in game design, programming, drawing, animation, music composition, sound design and story writing, but the list could go on and be very long.
The good news is that I have practiced professionally most of these skills in the past few years, and I have no doubt that I can achieve such a project. Furthermore, challenge is what motivates me to go forward! :)
The second piece of good news is that the game is already playable in the form of a 15 minutes playable demo (don't miss it!). I'm confident that once you've played the game, you'll agree that I will be able to complete the project.
At the moment, about 60% of the game is finished. Nearly all mechanics are in place and most of the work I still have to do is adding more content to the game.
Finally, let us not forget that life itself is a risk. My country (Belgium) and others have recently been through very sad things. Let's enjoy life and live our dreams while we can! <3Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
