About

On the 2nd July 2017, the OZ Film Festival was honoured to screen the directorial debut, The Death and Life of Otto Bloom, as our closing night feature film at London's prestigeous Regent Street Cinema.

We sponsored the film's director, Cris Jones's flight from Australia to attend the screening and participate in a Q&A hosted by James Mullighan, previous director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival. All of us were completely enamoured with Cris from the moment we met him - gentle, generous, eloquent and incredibly talented - he was the perfect close to our inaugral festival.

Both the festival and the cinema teams were devastated to learn that Cris Jones tragically passed away, at the age of 37, on 6th September 2017.

In order to honour such an incredible talent, we aim to raise at least £825* to sponsor a permanent seat at the Regent Street Cinema in Cris's name. The OZ Film Festival will be contributing the first £250 (reflected in the minimum amount we require)

If we raise £1,650* (£1,400 on this campaign) we will sponsor an exclusive director's chair.

Any additional funds raised will be put towards airfare and accommodation costs to host an annual screening + Q&A at our future festivals for an Australian debut director. This annual screening will be named in Cris's honour. The events will be held at Regent Street Cinema, London's oldest cinema, part of the University of Westminster, where Cris made his London debut.

* please note: both of these amounts include extra to cover the Kickstarter fees

Risks and challenges

If, for any reason, we do not achieve the £825 minimum to sponsor a chair in Cris's honour, we will still screen a directorial debut film every year at our festival and will name this screening in Cris's honour.

OZ Film Festival is a self-funded project. All the team volunteer their time and any profits (and they are minimal) are put back into funds for the following year. The Australian High Commission generously supported our inaugural festival, however no government funding has been secured for future festivals.

Most Australian films do not reach London screens - we are passionate about supporting as many as we can each year. Out of the five new features we screened at our 2017 festival, only one achieved London distribution, Hounds of Love.
