Amiri: Unleash the Rage

Posted by Owlcat Games (Creator)

Dear Pathfinders,

Our Kickstarter campaign may be over, but the updates keep on coming! We will continue to post news about the state of our game and our current progress. So without further ado, here's our next companion update, featuring a very special barbarian:

Far to the north lies the deep-frozen Realm of the Mammoth Lords — the homeland of primordial megafauna and equally primordial nomads. The people who live there are savages even by the standards of other barbarian tribes — life in this harsh climate leaves little place for anything beyond survival. Unlike Numeria, where women stand equal with men, here they are reduced to servants, preoccupied with raising children, making food and sewing clothes while men occupy the positions of chieftains, priests, warriors and hunters. These are the rules — but no rules can stop the fiery spirit burning in a true barbarian's heart. Amiri proved it by revolting against the miserable life her tribe has offered her, and becoming a fearsome warrior. Her triumph was rewarded with hatred, ridicule and, ultimately, an exile. She left her homeland and went to search for her destiny, never looking back.

If you have played the table-top version of Pathfinder RPG, then you are already familiar with Amiri, the iconic Barbarian. You might have met her — or maybe even played as her! — in one of the many Adventure Paths, watching her career as she went up to the top level. In the Pathfinder: Kingmaker CRPG we offer a new chapter of her journey, from the moment when she, a young Barbarian fresh from the North, joined an ambitious expedition to the Stolen Lands. What will she meet along the path? Will her past catch up to her, and how will she deal with it? You'll be there to see for yourself, and leave your mark on her destiny.

As a true barbarian, Amiri shuns heavy armor, rushing into battle armed with an enormous sword — a memento from her motherland — and her wild, unbridled rage. While her more fragile allies attack from afar with arrows and magic spells, she hurries to the frontline, with just one strategy in mind: do as much damage as possible, and beat the enemies to a pulp before they get a chance to do the same to her. "I'll survive. I always survive" is her motto, and so far it has never failed her.

If you decide to rely on Amiri's help in ruling your kingdom, don't expect any insightful advice — instead, make use of her muscle power, agility and phenomenal endurance. Moderately loyal and not too scrupulous, she'll make a great peacekeeper, or a formidable enforcer, depending on your governing style.

Hail to the Kings,

Diego Blaquier, Brandon Urey, and 115 more people like this update.

She disappeared some point in the game due to bugs and never able to see her again because Owlcat never give players debug tools in this buggy game.

1st Amiri is the iconic barbarian from Pathfinder, blaming owlcat studios for her clothing is stupid as they didn't choose them, they have just stayed true to an iconic hero from pathfinder.
2nd this is a fantasy game so if your still arguing about the female armor 1980 is calling and wants you back.
3rd it is all make believe who cares what her sword would weigh if it were real or how well her armor would work if it was real or if she shaves her pits if she was real, it is a fantasy game character enjoy they game and if a girl in not 100% authentic armor (as far as your opinion) is the reason you can't enjoy a game then I have nothing for you.

The shit storm in this comments section is disheartening. Beautiful design, hope it sticks around. Imagine a barbarian that WASN'T half naked. Especially when this is only a single character in a game full of all ready diverse character designs.

Kingdom Death Monster with its risque miniatures in controversial poses raised $12,393,139 (that is over 12 Million US Dollars for emphasis). While those Politically Correct straightjacker games usually struggle to break the 100K barrier.

Personally I like the picture, but as others have said, the armour she is wearing would not exactly be the most practical (or realistic). Having done HEMA, and other martial arts, I can understand why she has the kind of armour she does (to some degree). if she can keep her distance and use the reach of her sword then protecting her arms would be crucial as they are exposed, the same for the legs, which might be in reach of the opponent's weapon. However, I do not like that the arm-protection goeas all the way up to the should in that way, as that would look to hamper movement of her arms.

I think her fighting style is to keep the opponent at bay. If the opponent comes inside her sword-range, then she is in trouble, and would benefit from protection on the torso but the extra weight (and extra heat she will suffer) from that migth be in he rmind disadvantageous.

The sword itself is a bit iffy, as that amout of steel in the blade would mean the pivot-center of it would end up a bit away from the handle, so it is thus a very front-heavy blade. Sure, it will do great damage when it hits, but it will be slow to change direction in an attack/defence. I would estimate that such a sword would weigh somewhere in the reign of 10-15 Kg (a Claymore is about 4-4.5Kg and a longsword 1-1.5 Kg). It does require that the handle is well made to stand up for it as well.

      I leave with a a video of a trained fighter using a sword weighting about 4 Kg.…

@Netobvious Prefered style has nothing to do with this. Nor artitstic freedom. You give damn about artists, devs and there is no problem rpg player's mob mentality sending whole studios to hell (seriously guys, you dont give single thought to consequences of your actions). Despite i would like kick gaming industry out of head of bullied skinny teenage boy with glasses for last centrury where it is still stucked, my point is somewhere else. You are the one who is breaking style and chains artists freedom. No matter if we looks one game from GoT world, Witcher series, Pathfinder, DnD, Warcraft, Final Fantasy. No matter what style they have (high fantasy, super hero comic style, dark fantasy, whatever). We still get same "fan service" style of women with naked bellies, half of butts, legs, watermelon boobies, heels, cleavages, clothes so tight you wonder they can move, boobplates, weird stripper style positions
without taking single shit about their story, world, art style or everything else (see Ves in Witcher 2 and this is kind of realistic dark style of fantasy). You are not okey with it, you even demand it! But Amiri is new level. She is mutant. Pathfinder for what i read so far has SUPER SJW WET DREAM world. You have barbarian who doesnt want typical female role her tribe wants her follow. You have homosexuals, trangenders, bisexuals... everything! You have nice practical armors full of nice details - flasks, scrolls, survival knives and axes. And... and barbarian with naked belly to sold board game bullied skinny teenage boys (even if they are hiding in heads of grown up men with kids and wives).

I did finally get a chance to watch your videos of the live stream you had on twitch.

It looks pretty good as an Alpha.

Need to see Weather Effects, Trees move from the wind blowing, Thunder lighting, and Cloud shadows move on the ground. Insects buzz around, different look to forests and the ground. Mist or Fog Effects in forests etc.

Animations that are showing the skill you are doing.

Over all I think you guys have a great Vision. You have a competent composer for your music, a great writer, and a lot of passion! Look forward to what you create.

Remember people really do want the Baldur's Gate 3 or NeverWinter Nights 3.

Even Dragon Age Origins with a ton of Mods is amazingly done well, better even.

The Witcher 2 had a party and you played as a party it would be up there with the Great Party Based RPG's.

      Thanks for Sharing!

Everyone is free to like different styles of art. Some people prefer the style of Manga and Animie comics.

However, it is ludicrous to state that an artist drawing a fictional character in a fantasy universe is unrealistic and wrong. That criticism has no merit in a fantasy world of magic spells and mythical monsters. Fantasy, and let me repeat that, fantasy is not realistic and therefore, fantasy armour does not have to be realistic but can follow the style the artist prefers to draw.

Apparently I was misunderstood. I am perfectly comfortable with the female form, I'm saying that to wear an outfit like the one depicted here, leaving aside the fact that it exposes multiple vital organs, would be uncomfortable, probably painful, chafing nightmare.

Do you two realize i am all the time talking about funny thing that she has havily armored arms and legs but not body? That she HAS partly realistic armor for fantasy and completely not unrealistic but almost animelike batshit? No barbarian skirt (dudes have protectect belly and butts most of time) I must be repeating this like five times but nobody seems taking it so try something more understandable for you. Imagine muslim woman wearing veil/hijab but also minimalistic dress. You can talk about her right to wear what she wants but i am laughing about point of wearing it veil since she is mostly naked anyway. :D

Hmmmm. Every Highlander that fought did so in a "skirt and a big ass sword" I'm thinking her wearing pants and wielding a large blade is cool.

I am looking forward to the character's development and how Game choices are going to affect all the companions. Having played the RPG and then getting to run it and putting my phone wn twist on things......I am sooooooo ready to see what spin they put on Kingmakers story. Especially the extra chapter!!!

    17. Jonathan Patterson on

The way I see it, classes in fantasy games are largely about realizing various power fantasies. For the barbarian, that's come to represent the fantasy of reckless abandon and unbridled rage and power, to the point of of disregarding one's own safety. That's why barbarians are typically depicted wearing very little armor and clothing. Does it making any sort of real world practical sense? Not really, but fantasy settings typically only have one foot in reality (though there are a few historical examples of people going into battle nearly or even totally nude).

    18. Missing avatar

      Morgan Everret on

@Netobvious Cool, when it comes to games, so i could enjoy warriors fully canned in ridiculously huge spiked armor without thinking which gender i have to pick? Lots of fantasy warrior women sharing same problem and same look so i suppose it's more about fan demand than freedom. And could stop for moment with your outrage and see what's my problem realy is? You seem choose to ignore it.
Btw dude political correctness is speaking nicely about minorities or hiding their problems/crimes. This has nothing to do with "censoring" art nor with your bad taste.

    19. Netobvious

MorganEverret it is not progressive to censor art. Many comicbooks have recently had their covers retracted because an INTOLERANT Outrage Brigade demanded Political Correctness demands artist self-censor or get censored. Art cannot win the war because Political Correctness plays the zero-sum game.

The wonderful art of Wayne Reynolds was suddenly getting its share of attacks by the Outrage Brigade. so it is good that Owlcat Games is not pandering to such censorship demands.

    20. Liam Crowter on

I do agree that I'd like to see more about character customization than the companions but I'd rather the devs focus on working on the game!

    21. Liam Crowter on

@James Carter Your lack of comfort with the female form is no concern of ours. The developers should stay consistent with the source material.

On top of that, of course, it's a CRPG, and equippable Armour and loot changes over time. It's a ridiculous argument to be having.

    22. Missing avatar

      Morgan Everret on

@Zoltan Conan and his world is completely different story and his underwear is last problem of it. All these mountains of musles and naked women crawling on dirt licking her hero's feet. Yay. But this art is weird mutant between practical and completely unpractical armor. And i am actually wondering when did you get that "speed" idea since she has completely stuffed her arms and legs in clothes and armor. You guys dont see that? She cant be even tanky unless you want here tank agressive fishes in shalow water. Pillars having this isnt excuse, it's another huge question why fantasy artists are doing this. Some ppl are saying "sex sells" so there should be another question for consumers - is this what you realy want?
@Netobvious From what i read here and from story of Amiri, Pathfinder is what you by mistake calling "political correctness" (completely different thing. term for what you are looking is "progression" or "inclusion", or it's just being modern, poc and lgtbq friendly). That why we get gay romances yay! Andromeda being destroyed by PC is on other hand new infromation for me. I would say it was destroyed by youtube gameplay videos showing wierd faces (most of ppl are complaining about boring story, stupid dialogs and ugly animations). Mass Effect is fully progressive since first game in series. All BW games are for long time. Where you are getting all these weird assumption, it's mystery for me.
BIG NOTE FOR EVERYONE: I am not sjw, progressive (maybe a little since i like my worlds colourful, full of exotic mysterious things, npc, lands and all these shapes and tastes), political correct (ME? HA!!!! you are probably more than me). I am pointing out illogical things and inconsistent artist designs. And could you show single case of censorship artists are suffering from? All boobplates, naked bellies, chainmail bikinis, heels and other mery stuff looks in place in my games. Even boardgames dont seem afflicted by this.

    23. Netobvious

Some fans of RPGs were also fans of Bioware's Mass Effect until Political Correctness and associated agendas destroyed Mass Effect Andromeda.

In the 21st Century, it is interesting to witness visceral demands by the Outrage Brigade to censor artwork and shame risque artists.

Mabybe, one reason that the Kingdom Death Monster kickstarter raised millions was its rebellion against the shackles of self-censorship. Those PC shackles are frankly destroying artistic integrity through diktats from design-by-committee overlords.

    24. Meszaros Zoltan on

@cheezeegriff - I think Valeria may be a better choice for a tank. Amiri most likely will be closer to a melee DPS.

@Morgan - did you had the same question when Conan was a total badass in his underwear ? :)

Her armor is more about speed - as she is all offense - than defense. As a barbarian she also has damage reduction. BTW, the Hide Armor in Pillars is very similar what Amiri wear here.

    25. Missing avatar

      cheezeegriff on

She looks good. In the Baldur's Gate series (which I'm replaying at the moment) I'm always tempted to play as a tank, because you can make the main character a better tank than anything the game offers (and a tank is also the best damage dealer). I'll be able to let Amiri take the front line while my character stands back and provides support for a change.

    26. Missing avatar

      Morgan Everret on

And no my laughing isnt saying "OMG CHANGE IT". Just to be sure... Devs can leave it this way but i am still interested in serious talk with artists who thinks it's good idea having naked baddass female warrior.

    27. Missing avatar

      Morgan Everret on

If npc warrior dude is wearing huge badass chest and shoulders but naked legs, socks and underwear with with hearts on it, its not coz realism why you are laughing under table and cannot take him seriously. Amiri story isnt helping much. :D

    28. Joshua Neeley on

Yea. Don't change Amiri. Leave her the same design us Pathfinder players have been in love with for years now. If she is capable of wielding that giant blade efficiently in battle I don't think the "realism" of her armor really matters in a fictional game.

    29. marc on

IIRC Amiri signature weapon is a large bstard sword, without specific weapon crafting how is her weapon going to scale as she levels.

    30. Missing avatar

      Morgan Everret on

@James Carter She has heavily armored arms and legs and naked belly. Underboob is last problem with her design. Also that sword looks ridiculous compared other equipment. It's just lol. :D

    31. James Carter on

Did we really need the underboob on Amiri's armour? The midriff was bad, but that just looks horrendously uncomfortable.

I know it's supposed to be based off the original artwork by Wayne Reynolds, but this took the worst element of that design and made it way worse.

Ill take Valerie, Amiri can stay home and guard the stables.

    35. Lewis Crown on

Personally I think it's important to note that her blade is more than just a memento of her homeland. It's a giants blade that should be too big too use but she does it anyway out of sheer defiance & strength. Otherwise people might think it's RPG characters must use giants swords syndrome.

Probably early next week for the forums. While I'm as keen as everyone else to get on these forums ASAP, the community did just give the devs the possibility to create the game of their dreams, by funding them beyond their wildest imagination. Let them celebrate a little bit. ;)

    45. Joshua Neeley on

OMG the armor argument is so old now. Guys this is fantasy, i'm not in this for reality. I for one am super glad she looks the way she was initially designed by her creators at the start of Pathfinder as a whole. Stop making a deal out of fictional characters' attire that don't exist to begin with. You can't keep trying to censor stuff just because it doesn't jive with your views.

    46. Missing avatar

      Jarryd Webber on

      Hi all.

When will the dev forum be made available?

    47. Morris

@Andrew Rivett - She's a barbarian, which means she has inherent damage reduction, so she can afford not to wear as much armor. The point is to capture the sort of "savage tribesperson out in the wilderness feel. Also, you can change her armor (which will be reflected in her character model). That's just the default.

    48. Thunderborn on

Love the updating. She looks cool.

    49. Morris

@Mark Andrew Edwards - It's certainly a miserable life for those who don't enjoy it (like Amiri) or for those who want to do something else. I'm sure working as a Librarian is extremely fulfilling for some people, but a Formula One driver would be super bummed out if they were told "you can't drive, you can only be a librarian." This is Amiri's backstory. Her entire tribe hated her for being better at fighting than the men, and she was sent on a mission that they hoped would kill her and when she came back victorious, they were celebrating her death. You can judge for yourself if her life was miserable or not.

    50. Netobvious

The most iconic artwork of Amiri is the one that Wayne Reynolds introduced in the early days of Pathfinder. So this game is honoring the classics.
