280 Cards Inside!
280 Cards Inside!

Description

The game is very simple: you have a hand of words, and in the middle there’s another word on the discard pile. Pick the word from your hand that most relates to the one in the middle— and prepare to defend it if someone else challenges with their own!

If yours is voted better, the challenger takes back theirs and draws two more. If the challenger wins, you just take back your card. The winning card becomes the new top of the discard pile and play continues clockwise. The first to run out of cards is the winner.

4 copies of the game rules are included in the box, each printed on a card. The rest of the cards each feature a unique noun and illustration of it, all drawn digitally by myself. These rules work fairly well for 4-6 players, but there are certainly more ways to play with Wordpool cards. This is a big reason why I’m asking for suggestions from you, because I myself haven’t thought of the many other ways to play.

To help spark creativity though, I could list a few ideas. For example, gameplay can be expanded to larger groups if there is only one challenge allowed for a word. Another way to play would be that a challenger must announce the challenge before seeing what the initial match is. Wordpool cards make decent vocabulary flash cards. You could play variations of the memory game with Wordpool, where the cards are laid flat in a grid, and pairs are found that share a category or rhyme. More game ideas, please!

It's on Facebook too! Check out the page and like+share it to help reach the goal and get Wordpool printed!

For every 200 likes that the Wordpool Facebook page receives I’ll add and publish another set of rules for Wordpool in an update! Then, at the end of the campaign, up to 5 ways to play will be included in the game, each rule set printed on its own card.

Positives of Wordpool

  • Follows simple rules and fun for all ages.
  • Remains playable even if you lose a few cards from the set.
  • Multi-purpose cards. They’re just words with pictures! I’m currently in the process of adding more rule sets for different game ideas.
  • Great for language learning.
  • Sparks lively discussion over inevitably ridiculous comparisons. Remember, there’s no penalty for playing your turn, so go for it!
  • Encourages creativity.
  • High potential for expansion to include more cards in the game.
  • Wordpool follows a similar idea to popular matching games like Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity, but improves upon them in at least two ways: any card can pair with any other card for more variety, and there’s no designated judge for each turn so gameplay is more dynamic and fun.

History

I’ve always loved making up games to play. Sometimes the outcome can create joy out of nowhere like magic (and sometimes it’s just annoying). The good news is you can rest assured that Wordpool is definitely one of my good creations, as many play-throughs with different people have proven.

Ye Old Prototype
Ye Old Prototype

The first version we used for early playtesting was a pile of quartered index cards, on which I wrote nouns over 3 hours one quiet afternoon. It proved to be worth developing the idea further after playing with them several times with friends and family, and I began looking into card printing companies to make myself a printed prototype. I settled on makeplayingcards.com, which offered order sizes as low as a single copy, showed up near the top in my search results, and included the complete ordering process on their website.

Once I had a way to make real playing cards, I set about drawing them digitally. This process lasted a whole college semester, but finally during semester break I finished drawing the last cards.

The following semester I played Wordpool with anyone willing to try it. It never failed to entertain, and that encouraged me to look earnestly into marketing, manufacturing, and distribution options. This last process was long and winding, but in the end I settled on Kickstarter to host my crowdfunding page, CustomedCards for manufacturing the game cards and boxes, and SendFromChina to handle most of the distribution.

Plan & Stretch Goals

My goal is to reach 500 orders, for a total of $10,000. 500 boxes is the minimum bulk order for which the price per item is low enough to sell at $20 each.

But if there’s enough support, by all means! It’s simple enough to scale to more orders. If I can pass my initial goal, it will be a definite proof-of-concept for me, and encouragement to expand upon Wordpool depending on what you think, so give me all your suggestions!

And, as mentioned above, for every 200 likes that the Wordpool Facebook page receives I’ll add and publish another set of rules for Wordpool in an update! Then, at the end of the campaign, up to 5 ways to play will be included in the game, each rule set printed on its own card. So make sure to like the page and share it so others can support it too!

I’m really excited to see the fun to be had with Wordpool, and thanks in advance for supporting me and the game.

Risks and challenges

A project like this has low risks, with simple components and few parties involved.

For one thing, this is an “all-or-nothing” campaign, so your purchase of the game only happens if we can pool enough funds to print and ship it.

For another, the process is simple: I’ll compile a list of addresses to which to send each box, order 500 to be printed at the manufacturer CustomedCards, and then send the games and orders/addresses list to SendFromChina. My manufacturer has a good reputation and experience with projects like mine, distribution risks like lost packages are low, and I’ll take every measure to ensure that everyone receives what they ordered, and know what’s happening along the way.
