The Board Game Book, Volume 2
The second edition of the bestselling tabletop gaming guide!
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Wed, October 2 2019 10:53 AM UTC +00:00.
The essential guide to the year's best tabletop games
Earlier this year we published the first edition of The Board Game Book, a hardcover series exploring the most exciting new tabletop games. It combined expert games criticism, exclusive designer interviews and gorgeous studio photography.
We had a fantastic response from fans, and with your help we want to do it all over again!
We're working on a brand new edition: another 256-page hardback packed with over 130,000 words of original games journalism. And this time we're covering the top hobby releases of 2019-2020.
In-depth games criticism
Our authors are games journalists with bylines at some of the world's most respected media outlets. In The Board Game Book they explore everything from quick and simple family games to deep, complex strategy releases.
We're interested in how games feel to play: how they represent their themes, the atmosphere they create around the table and the types of decisions they throw at players. We're 100% editorially independent, and we're not shy about pointing out flaws, even in games we love. The result is a deep dive into the hobby that includes the year's biggest hits as well as standout indie gems from up-and-coming creators.
Stunning studio photography
Great games aren't just fun to play; they're beautiful physical objects. That's why we carry out full-colour studio photography for each game featured in the book, aiming to capture their atmosphere and character on every page.
Exclusive designer interviews
Often the story behind a game can be as fascinating as the game itself. That's why we include behind-the-scenes interviews with game designers, digging into their creative processes, their sources of inspiration and the personal stories behind their work.
Interviewees in The Board Game Book, Volume 1 included a who's-who of game design, as well as some brilliant newer creators:
- Alan R. Moon (Ticket to Ride)
- Richard Garfield (Magic: The Gathering)
- Reiner Knizia (Tigris & Euphrates)
- Mike Mearls (Dungeons & Dragons)
- Matt Leacock (Pandemic)
- Rob Daviau (Pandemic: Legacy)
- Nikki Valens (Arkham Horror)
- Inka & Markus Brand (EXIT: The Game)
- Martin Wallace (Brass)
- Isaac Childres (Gloomhaven)
- Alex Roberts (Star Crossed)
- Cole Wehrle (Root)
- Bruno Cathala (Kingdomino)
- Corey Konieczka (Twilight Imperium Fourth Edition)
- ...and many more.
Praise for The Board Game Book, Volume 1
The Dice Tower's Tom Vasel gave our first book his coveted Seal of Excellence.
We also received a great review from Rahdo Runs Through!
And Board Game Inquisition also had some great things to say about the book!
Tom Vasel of The Dice Tower said:
"This is an amazing book. I give it my highest recommendation. There are a lot of books about board games and honestly this is by far the best I've seen."
Quintin Smith from Shut Up & Sit Down said:
"Not only does it have professional writers examining the year’s best releases, it has the nicest accompanying photography I’ve seen in a board game book."
Richard Ham of Rahdo Runs Through said:
"There were a lot of games that sounded intriguing and interesting that I'd never heard of, and I know about games. It's full of really crackerjack advice whether you're a new player or an experienced, hardcore player."
Julia Roth of Geek Girl Authority said:
"What really helps to set The Board Game Book apart from others is the inclusion of interviews with some of the game designers. It is such a treat to see what goes on behind the scenes and how some of our favourite games come to life. If you are a huge fan of board games or even like them a little, add The Board Game Book to your collection now."
Andrew Girdwood of GeekNative said:
"I predict The Board Game Book will become an annual success. This is precisely the sort of 'pick up and browse' delight that you want available to friends while you’re waiting for the rest of the adventuring party to turn up."
Oliver Kinne of Tabletop Games Blog said:
"The quality of the writing is high, and the editing and production are also excellent. To top it all off, the new book smell was amazing – or maybe that’s just me."
The book also hit the number two spot on Amazon UK's gaming bestseller list

We need to raise £12,500 to be able to produce the book. But raising additional funds will help us to do much more!
UNLOCKED! £16,000 - Printed end papers
If we reach this goal, we'll upgrade the book's plain white end papers (the inside front and rear covers) to stylish printed ones showing a collage of components from our featured games.
UNLOCKED! £20,000 - Backer party at the UK Games Expo
If we hit £20,000, we'll organise a party at the 2020 UK Games Expo to celebrate the launch of the book. It'll be a chance to meet fellow readers and the team behind the book after the halls close. And of course, we'll probably end up playing a few games as well!
UNLOCKED! £22,000 - Cover illustration by Tania Walker
If our campaign reaches £22,000 we will be able to commission artist Tania Walker to create our cover! Tania is a former Disney animator and has worked on games including The Lady & The Tiger, Village Pillage and the roleplaying game Kids On Bikes. Check out some examples of her amazing work below:
£25,000 - Freelance rates boost
We think it's only fair that if the book performs well, its co-authors benefit. If we hit this goal, we'll be able to pay a higher page rate to our freelance contributors.
£30,000 - Another freelance rates boost!
At £30,000 we'll be able to raise our freelance rates again, ensuring that the book's co-authors all share in the campaign's success.
We're printing and shipping books from Glasgow, Scotland. Backers' books will be shipped in reinforced cardboard book boxes similar to those used by big online retailers.
In almost all countries, books are exempt from tariffs or import taxes. Following our last campaign we shipped books around the globe and are not aware of any of them being subject to import charges. This means this campaign comes with worldwide friendly shipping!
What about Brexit?
There is a chance that the UK may leave the European Union in October 2019. Our understanding is that under international trade rules, there would be no additional taxes due on books imported to the EU. However if any such expenses arise, we will meet them ourselves rather than passing them on to European backers.
Can't wait for Volume 2?
The Board Game Book, Volume 1 has had a big increase in sales during the campaign. Our US warehouse is currently sold out, but in the UK you can still buy copies online from Blackwell's Books. We will be arranging a second print run of Volume 1 as soon as possible.
Our campaign includes pledge levels for game and book retailers. These come with multiple copies of the book at a wholesale discount, and ship only to verified retail addresses. Retailers also receive a set of promotional bookmarks with Board Game Book branding, which we will only be making available as a retail and convention promo.
Please note that these reward levels are only available in the US and mainland Europe. In the UK we are distributed through Asmodee (game trade) and Gardners (book trade). Our partner in Australia and New Zealand is VR Distribution. Retailers in other regions, please contact us to discuss supply.
We're delighted to have some of our sponsors for The Board Game Book, Volume 1 returning to support us again. This means we have a limited number of sponsorship opportunities available this year. For £800 you can receive:
- A full-page ad in The Board Game Book, Volume 2
- 30 copies of the book to distribute to customers, clients and staff
- The chance to reach an audience of dedicated tabletop gamers
If you'd like to discuss sponsorship opportunities before backing, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Just let us know in the comments, and we'll answer as quickly as possible!

Risks and challenges
Having delivered the first edition of The Board Game Book, we're keen to give readers the same high standard of quality with Volume 2. In the event that any of our contributors is unable to complete their work on the book for any reason, we will commission another highly skilled writer to contribute to the project.
We will have appropriate insurance in place to cover damage or loss of goods in transit. In the event of any backers' copies being damaged during shipping, we will replace them as quickly as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
