This project is officially successful! Everyone will soon get to hunt down those Witches, give Hope to their fellow Puritans, and clear the Despair out of New Salem. The two of us are extremely grateful for everyone's help in making this happen and of course to Andrea for his incredible artistic vision that will bring the town to life.
If you missed out on the campaign, you can pre-order New Salem at overworldgames.com or you can wait for it to hit your friendly local game store. If you are a distributor or retailer or anyone else that has any questions about the game, use the Contact Me button to send us a message. Happy hunting!
You and several of your fellow 17th century citizens have decided to flee Salem, Massachusetts in the midst of the famous Salem Witch Trials to create an opportunity to start anew. You are all committed to eliminating any witch presence in your new town, but you also have your own selfish priorities for how development should be directed. Work to build the new town you envision while keeping New Salem free of the Despair wrought by witches.
New Salem is a hidden identity, deduction, drafting, and set collection game for 3-8 players that relies on simultaneous play to provide an extremely engaging social experience in under an hour. Each player receives a character card that determines the building types they will attempt to collect. Puritans must also pool their resources (Hope) to prevent New Salem from being overrun with Despair.
New Salem creates an experience where each player is working independently toward the highest score while also working together to prevent the witches from winning. Puritans must find a balance between selfishness and altruism to maximize their score while avoiding accusations of witchcraft.
New Salem lends itself well to the preferences and play style of each individual group. While it is important for witches to hide their identity, Puritans can choose whether to aggressively pursue a suspected witch and put them on trial or to attempt to remove Despair that the suspected witch is bringing into the town.
Drafting - New Salem uses drafting to allow each player to choose each building that he or she will build. As the game's primary mechanic, drafting creates a system of simultaneous play that allows this game to be finished in under an hour and scale seamlessly between three and eight players. You will never be waiting for your turn.
Set Collection - Who doesn't like collecting sets of things? Not only do you collect sets of three buildings of the same type for extra points, but the art on those buildings will also connect to form a beautiful panoramic picture and create a scene that brings the town to life.
Deduction - Observing which buildings are and are NOT drafted by other players provides players will serve as evidence that may help you determine which character card is held by each player. Observing and discussing the choices made by other players and the amount of Hope and Despair they are introducing to the town will help the Puritans as they discuss who may be a witch and put them on trial.
Social Interaction - There is nothing more important to us in the games that we publish than extremely rich social interaction. You will be paranoid when you play this game. You will be suspected, accused, and you will make a case to defend your actions throughout the game.
We have been fortunate enough to secure Andrea Olgiati of Hide Art to create some amazing artwork for New Salem. You may have seen some of Andrea's incredible art in Winter Tales - and if you haven't already, check it out!
Here are a few of the characters that you'll see in New Salem.
One of the most rewarding parts of set collecting in New Salem is placing the cards side-by-side and watching a beautiful panoramic scene come to life within the town. As you do so, you will see townspeople interacting in different locations throughout New Salem. Here is the Entertainment set to illustrate the concept.
- 6 Linen Event Cards used by Puritans by combining their Hope to bring witches to trial and eliminate Despair.
- 10 Linen Character Cards representing your secret identity as either a Puritan or a Witch.
- 144 Linen Building Cards drafted by all players to score victory points. These cards also produce Hope and Despair.
25 Wooden Hope Cubes used to keep track of the amount of Hope each player has produced and spent to trigger events.
25 Wooden Despair Cubes used to keep track of the amount of Despair each player has produced and triggers the win condition for the witch.
5 Cardboard Round Markers used as a visual reference to identify how many cards are played in each round and which direction to pass the cards during drafting.
All stretch goals will be included in every copy of New Salem that is produced for this Kickstarter campaign.
All reward levels that include a copy of a the game also include a copy of the four-player Print & Play.
We’ve worked with Noah Adelman of Game Trayz to produce a high-quality game tray insert for your New Salem box. Game Trayz make the game easier to tear down and organize. Most importantly, they will make it incredibly easy to get set up and playing right away! Here are some of the benefits of Game Trayz:
- Two Trayz each for Hope and Despair (four total) allows easy access for players at each end of the table.
- Separate storage for round counters, Character cards, and Event cards keeps components organized and makes setup quick and easy.
- Separate storage for sets of Building cards makes setup a breeze for any number of players.
Here are some mockups of the Trayz. Kickstarter backers will receive white Trayz, which will only be available through Kickstarter.
Learn more about Game Trayz' existing products by checking out the Game Trayz website, or read this great Geek Dad article about the Trayz that have been created for Terra Mystica and for Stonemaier Games’ Euphoria. You can also check out this video that demonstrates the Euphoria Game Trayz.
These cards will now be replaced by black and white wooden cubes so you can watch as New Salem is overcome with Hope or Despair!
The game will now include cardboard round counters instead of cards!

Risks and challenges
This is our second time around creating and fulfilling an amazing tabletop game, after our Good Cop Bad Cop campaign. We have every confidence that we will be equally successful in New Salem's fulfillment.
Unexpected circumstances can arise, but here are some of the steps we've taken to eliminate as much risk as possible:
- We have an incredible artist and have already established the final delivery date for all art.
- We have leveraged our experience from our prior campaign to ensure that we can manage shipping costs and delivery times.
- We have established communication with manufacturers to ensure that we have a strong understanding of our production time.
Of course, the unexpected can always occur. In such circumstances, we will remain transparent and keep you up-to-date on any potential impact to our backers (as we have with the Good Cop Bad Cop campaign).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
