WHAT'S THE PROJECT?
OVER THE HILL is a short Action/Comedy student film in the style of Edgar Wright. We'll be dragging our camera around locations in and around London in early 2014, with the film completed in May and premiering at the British Film Institute on London's South Bank.
WHAT'S THE STORY?
Merve is the unhappy resident of a quite suburban retirement home. When one day the care home is robbed, it falls upon the residents to regain what was most dear to them - and with the company of a young carer named Noah, her friend Henry Wilson (HW) and an outspoken divorcee called Joanna - Merve sets out to find the robbers with ideas of hope, reclamation and vengeance.
WHO ARE THE CHARACTERS?
The heart of the story. Resigned to living out her final years in unimportance, the robbery spurs her into action and into a new lease of life.
Henry-Wilson (HW)Loved by many but respected by few, all HW wants is to be James Dean, and maybe, just maybe, this robbery is his chance.
A bitter divorcee who doesn't mind who knows it. Her wisecracks keep the others in line and heading on towards their goal.
WHY DO YOU NEED ME?
We've put up half the money from our own pockets, but without all moving out to a cardboard hotel (which, admittedly, sounds like a great sitcom) we just can't do it all ourselves. Which is where you come in. With your help we can make this film the film it needs to be, not just another student movie with poor production values, unpaid actors, and boring locations.
HOW WOULD THE MONEY BE SPENT?
The Camera - Having weighed up costs against quality of image, we've chosen the Black Magic Cinema Camera to shoot on. Some of the money will go towards renting the camera out with the supporting kit, and on some good-quality lenses so it looks great.
The Actors - We've been lucky enough to work with some wonderful actors and think it's unfair they go without pay or even expenses for jobs. On Over The Hill, we will make sure our actors are looked after..
Props & Costume - A good share of the money will go towards the perfect costumes for Merve, Henry-Wilson, Joanna and the rest- as well as the weapons-I mean, props-they wield.
The Locations - No studio set could compare to the Real Thing, especially for our key locations such as the Retirement Home. Some of the budget is allocated to pay for that.
WHO ARE YOU, ANYWAY?
Nosa Eke graduated Brit School's Broadcast & Digital Communications Course, and has since found time in her degree to work in Channel 4's Young Writers Scheme and Soho Theatre's Young Writer's Lab, as well as writing and shooting an almost silly amount of films.
Michael Burrin has been working professionally in the film industry for more than two years. From being a sound recordist to a cinematographer, he specialises in being a know-it-all-or-at-least-an-awful-lot-of-it in everything. This is his second film as Director.
As well as double-Directing-and-Writing team Michael Burrin and Nosa Eke, Over The Hill is made up of Producer Cara Ghoshal, Director of Photography Kush Chhabria, Assistant Director Demircan Değer, Editor Samuel Richardson, Sound Designer Amelia Springett, and a myriad of their lovable colleagues. Between them they have years of professional experience, and decades of nerding out over films.
Risks and challenges
There's a certain risk that comes with shooting on the Black Magic camera, however we've done our research into everything we'll need to make shooting as smooth as possible and budgeted for all of it. We are also conducting comprehensive test shoots to make sure there's no problems on the day.
We're also very aware that there are risks associated in the mix of Action and older actors; and have planned for extensive rehearsals and planning to make sure that everyone is safe- or, at least, as safe as they can be while on on a film set and on a planet spinning at over 1000 miles per hour.
