About

Do you ever feel guilty about what our love of fashion is doing to the planet?

SAME :(

That's why I'm working to create the most environmentally friendly and ethically sound denim garments possible. Using 100% cotton, pre-consumer upcycled denim, made in a closed loop third generation textile mill in Guatemala that has been running since 1956. To top it off, everything will be manufactured ethically in a studio in rural Australia.

Denim overalls for children and adults are the foundation of my business. I am pleased to offer you the opportunity to get your hands on my 3rd collection at a reduced price and before anyone else. Alongside a bunch of new & Kickstarter exclusive products. This is my way of saying a heartfelt thank you, for helping me to build up this dream business.

Edith is 18 months old and wearing size 2
Caspar is 2 years, 11 months old and wearing size 3
Lennox is 4 years old and wearing size 4
Annabel wears adults size 2
Byron is 175cm tall and wearing size 2 tall length, Eirlie is 165cm tall and wearing size 1 regular length.

For the creatives and sewers, denim letter patches are custom embroidered from my own offcuts and can be used to customise just about anything.

Fancy making your very own kids overalls? Well, you're in luck because I've created a simplified version of my signature kids' overalls and made it into a sewing pattern - ready for Christmas delivery!

100% cotton pre-consumer waste upcycled denim - 152cm wide

Fancy stitching up your own denim dreams? As an exclusive Kickstarter option, I'm offering up a limited number of 2m lengths of my sustainable 10oz denim.  It comes in a generous 152cm width, meaning you will have plenty of fabric to create an adult garment, or a few children's pieces, without the stress of playing pattern Tetris.

This simple yet striking denim tote is inspired by a classic denim bag that I picked up in Paris and have subsequently been carrying around for nearly a decade.  It has a simple internal pocket for keeping essentials close. Updated with bold, tumbling letters screen printed by hand with either white or black water-based inks.

Moodboard sample

For the art lovers and bold print babes, I'm collaborating with Casey Burrill (artist, teacher, mother, and all-round legend) to create an exclusive Kickstarter artwork, that will be digitally printed onto organic cotton canvas and then whipped up into the most eye-catching overalls to ever exist. There are just 25 children's pieces and 25 adults on offer - which makes them even more special!

Custom denim overall inspiration images - embroidery, sashiko, paint

For those who love the world of visible mending, patching, custom denim culture as much as I do, this reward could quite literally have your name on it.

Do you like the idea of having something totally unique and custom made for you, with ongoing repairs taken care of?

That's exactly what you'll get with this exclusive reward. I'm so excited to open up my studio to 5 clients (virtually or in-person if you're local) and work with you to stitch your denim dreams into a totally one-off pair of overalls. You'll have access to my denim library, assorted fabrics from vintage and modern fabric, patches from independent designers around the world, a rainbow of threads and my undivided sewing skills, attention & enthusiasm. This reward includes 5 years' worth of repairs/patching/customising services. So as your garment wears, or your tastes evolve, we can continually update and refresh your piece together.

For the past 2 years, I have been developing my signature overalls, designed to be hardwearing, versatile and above all stylish. I proudly manufactured my first season with my own two hands in East London (in my bedroom at night while my children slept...or didn't) My second range I worked with a wonderful factory in north London to help with the demand.

I've only ever used 100% cotton fabrics, my packaging has always been recyclable and I reused the smallest offcuts for various projects, but I knew I wanted to do better, I needed to for my conscience as much as the environment.

In early 2019 I moved from London to rural Australia and I have become laser-focused on doing the best I can for our incredible environment. Living amongst vineyards and canola fields in the Golden Plains Shire, collecting rainwater in massive tanks and using wood fires for the majority of our heating, it's put our use of resources into context & made me question what we do to our environment in order to live this way.

Why am I asking for help in this way?

I believe we should only put items into the world that are worthy of using our precious resources, this requires getting it right from the very first step - by investing in the most eco-friendly and responsible materials available. As a single mum to two pre-school aged children, splitting my time and finances between personal and business life means it's incredibly difficult to raise this money on my own. A wholesale fabric order is a big expense, but one that is 100% worth it. I'm incredibly excited by the opportunity to offer you this beautiful & sustainable denim fabric through my designs.

My dream is to set up an ethical workshop where I produce beautiful garments, to employ others who are equally passionate about fashion and our environment, and to have a solid business that works in harmony with my commitment to my young family.

Me behind the scenes - slightly freaking out

Risks and challenges

I have been manufacturing under the Over All 1516 brand for nearly 2 years now, and sewing in one way or another for over 20 years. Since December 2018 I've been perfecting the rest of my denim plans, from sourcing the right denim mill, to liaising with hardware factories, to exploring and refining the construction process for a larger scale operation.

Once the Kickstarter is funded, I will monitor every detail of manufacturing, packaging, and shipping to make sure it meets our rigorous QA standards. I'm a Taurus so I love nothing more than getting the details sorted into a nice spreadsheet :) My background in managing production across various factories throughout Asia during my time as a product developer and garment technician at Lee Jeans, as well as Quality Assurance background from luxury retailer Reiss, means I know exactly what needs to be done to get the highest quality products, delivered on time. I will keep my customers in the loop along the way and make you aware of every update.

Although this is a big step for my brand, I feel well-equipped to handle possible challenges that may crop up along the way. I am determined and excited to work toward the projected shipping estimates and deliver a product that exceeds your expectations.

Long-lasting design

All products are made with longevity in mind. Fabrics are chosen for their durability, and high quality construction techinques are used to ensure everything is created in the most structurally sound way possible. The childrens garments have a generous cut, designed with a number of factors so that the garment can grow with the child. Once one child has grown out of them, they are encouraged to pass them on, to a sibling or friend, by the reminder printed in the back lining - where there is space for 3 childrens names, three different owners, to be written in proudly. Garments will all come with instructions on how to give their new item the proper care it deserves - in a way that is gentle to the item, and the planet.

Reusability and recyclability

The design and production process is centered around creating garments that will last a long time, and have as minimal impact on the earth as possible. Garments are made to be future heirlooms, with a custom-designed screen print in the back lining of the garment to allow the owner to write their name. Two additional spaces are there for when the garment is passed on to other children, a reminder to celebrate and cherish the life the garment has lived. All fabric and threads used are cotton, so once the garment is no longer needed, the hardware can be removed and the garment will completely break down. All packaging is biodegradable, from the packaging materials to the eco-friendly packing tape. Paper material used for swing tickets and notes in orders is made from card offcuts that have been used in the earlier pattern cutting process, made into a pulp and poured into new moulds to make "new" paper.

Sustainable materials

The denim that I plan to purchase is 100% pre-consumer upcycled 100% cotton denim. The mill collects scraps of denim fabric offcuts that would otherwise be discarded and sent to landfill by local denim manufacturers. Instead, they collect then break down the fibers, and re-weave into new thread to make new textiles. The denim takes its colour from the original offcuts it is woven from, which eliminates the need for dyes and chemicals. Paper used in the sewing patterns will be FSC certified & printed using eco inks.

Environmentally friendly factories

The denim mill operates a closed-loop, zero waste facility, and by working with local coffee farmers they are able to supply any excess cotton at the end of the weaving process to farms where it is used for fertiliser. Every kilogram of upcycled textile waste saves 20,000 liters of water and every ton of upcycled textiles prevents 20 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. The garments are manufactured in an ethically run studio in Australia, supplied by rainwater & operating in harmony with the natural surrounds.

Sustainable fulfillment and distribution

The delivery of all physical rewards will have their carbon emissions offset. Parcels going abroad will be sent by sea and consolidated into a few shipments to save on excess packaging, weight and therefore fuel. As much as possible, local bike couriers will deliver rewards.

Having trouble distinguishing the good guys from the greenwashers?

Being "sustainable" is big business, which is excellent news for the planet - but it unfortunately also means that its getting trickier and trickier for consumers to figure out the best way to shop, when every second item advertised is making eco related claims.

I put together this guide to be something you can pick up and read a chapter of, or go through the whole thing at once, to help you feel confident in the textile related choices you are making as a consumer.

Written simply, with clear images and easy to understand yet totally actionable, information is power & I believe this book will be key to some huge shopping habit shifts.

The final piece will be digitised then printed up the road in Melbourne, by a textile printing company with Ethical Clothing Australia certification, using eco friendly inks.
