So... we made a game console.

And by "we" I mean you. OUYA wouldn’t exist without you.

Just last summer, we shared an idea for a simple, beautiful, powerful game console that lets any developer publish a game for the TV. We were driven by our love for couch gaming. And when you (and the rest of our early supporters) rallied around us, you inspired us.

We got here together.

Today, we honor you. Today we start shipping our early backers their OUYAs. And at our unveiling event this evening, the first of you will get to see OUYA in the flesh (or, metal, as it were).

Thank you.

Thank you for your encouraging words, for your belief when doubters doubted, for your feedback and ideas, and for your trust. And, I have to personally thank the OUYA team for the sleepless nights and sacrifices they’ve made to make OUYA for you.

A couple things our team wants you to know when you get your OUYA:

  • When you first boot it up, you’ll experience our first update :) This will either be super fast (seconds) or allow you to get a drink (minutes) based on your connection speed. Eventually, we want to do these updates in the background...
  • You'll need a credit/debit card to download games. All games are still free to try. Your card will only be charged if you buy content you love. We do want valid payment information for everyone. This is to ensure that game developers can get paid when you love their game.
  • OUYA supports up to four controllers (you can always get more at And, because we support Bluetooth, you can pair other devices as well. We are testing now and will start publishing a list of devices soon.

This is only the beginning. Today begins an exclusive preview period as we gear up to launch in June. We'll continue to add features, refine the user interface, and keep building the software as we head toward our retail launch -- now announced for June 4.

We hope that you, our founding backers, continue to shape OUYA as we prepare to launch to the masses. Your feedback, to date, has been incredibly helpful and as you know, we’ve acted on many of your ideas and suggestions. We want your feedback on these first units. You know how to find us -- but we are also creating forums keep the convo going. In fact, we are planning an "AMA" (ask me anything) on Reddit to get your ideas. We'll do this in April (date still TBD), after you’ve had time to give OUYA a whirl.

Start checking your mailboxes daily as these units roll out over the next few weeks. You'll get an email when your console ships out of our factory. Keep in mind, it’s a rolling shipment, and consoles will be arriving at houses every day for the next several weeks.

Once your OUYA arrives: get playing!

As of 7:59 p.m. PT, there are already 104 published games on OUYA (all still free to try), like Final Fantasy III and some new surprises we think you’ll love: Beast Boxing Turbo, Stalagflight, Knightmare Tower, and even one called Save the Puppies. There are already a few entertainment apps, too. You can watch the TV shows and movies you already own with XBMC and Flixster, or watch games streamed through TwitchTV.

And developers are releasing new games for OUYA everyday. Eight thousand developers have created developer accounts with us so far.

Our hope is to see these game developers express their most creative ambitions through OUYA. We can't wait to see what they unleash on our TVs.

OUYA on...

P.S. In case you missed it, as part of making OUYA the most open game platform around, we just announced that we published all the diagrams you’ll need to 3D print an OUYA yourself! Thanks MakerBot (who has a sweet 3D printer, and runs the Thingiverse community site)!

"You'll need a credit/debit card to download games."
      Liar. Misleading. Incorrect.
In fact, after the update, a credit card number is required to LOGIN.
No option to skip. No option to defer until later. No option to access account settings or controls until AFTER I GIVE YOU MY CREDIT CARD NUMBER. What could you possibly have been thinking???

      I'm so disappointed in you.

what a Fuc* is that!?! I got my OUYA console today ( i don't even comment on this as this is another bu11shit and some people still waiting) and I cannot even touch user interface because of credit card information. I am not going to do this and basically I will return it! all those nice words about open source etc. 8 millions of dollars and I cannot use it?!? Just don't say my credit card information are safe because they are not and I am going to be another sony customer!

    3. Nathan on April 5, 2013

As many others have said I understand the ouya team has a lot of places to comment/post, but it would be nice if they read stuff here since it pertains to the backers who funded them as well as is directly responding/asking questions about this post.

    4. Nathan on April 5, 2013

They just said in this post that you would get a email when your order was shipped to track it. So assuming you haven't gotten one then you probably are in the same boat as many others and they just haven't shipped it to you yet.

I am pretty sure the units we are getting are the same that will be in stores. Not sure if the review units are a swell or if they are the early ones that devs got (after which the controller and I am sure other stuff has been slightly changed). This could be one of the issues with some of the reviews, but who knows.

@Ian Frederickson As for the email with the username; I just got the backer number email confirming my username shortly after the survey, since they survey asked what username I wanted, from what I remember. I haven't gotten an email about when it will be shipped to me though.

International backer with a limited edition plus four controllers. Was number #177XX. Still no word.

I'd love to know how they're going through the numbers. So far it seems to be totally random.

    6. Jerimiah Hootman on April 5, 2013

Just piggy-backing off the last comment, I am an international purchaser. I'm assuming I'm not in the first roll outs just curious if there is an estimated ship date since I have gotten no e-mails

    7. Ian Frederickson on April 5, 2013

I have no record of a confirmation email. Is this going to be a problem for getting my Ouya and username?

    8. The Evolutionary on April 5, 2013

Oh, also flush plates on controllers that don't catch on the analog stick and fix the sticky buttons...PLEASE....(2 out of 2 reviews it not a good start), especially since I got 2 controllers.

    9. The Evolutionary on April 5, 2013

okay, initial of the first Ouya is NOT GOOD. Basically said we all purchased a Beta (or even Alpha). My question is, assuming a software update will fix many of the issue report on this review,
will we the backers, get supports, upgrades as this system is tweak/fixed/polished? Most people don't like purchasing an item twice just to get a reasonably working system.

    10. DxDark on April 4, 2013

      "Also, this -"

Note the word "AMONGST"...meaning it's going to be mostly random.

    11. Manuel Torres on April 4, 2013

I'm reading backers in the 4 digits are getting their ouya before backers in the 2-3 digits.
They must be shipping out of order. =-/

I backed with the first few hours of it going live. Just the console and a controller, nothing fancy so I don't have to wait at all. I'm in the triple digits and am pretty sure I have a low number, two or three hundreds. No shipping email yet :(

    13. Manuel Torres on April 4, 2013

Backer # 378XX, still no notification of any sort.
Any Limited Edition backers get any News??

    14. Nathan on April 4, 2013

Yeah @Steven Morlock look for the email confirming your username subject should be "Confirm you are ______" sent on 12/14/12 by
If you use Gmail doing a search for "Kickstarter backer number" with the quotes should find it.

I am Backer 8689 and no email here with a tracking number, since I am such a big number though and 103 hasn't gotten anything I am sure it will be a while. I can understand that production is probably a ramping up process. They want to get review units out so they can get more hype, for more pre-orders, have ample supply for the public store release date (many stores probably have a required number they ordered), and respect the people that funded them. They have about 63,419 just from kickstart to push out that is a good number to produce, assuming there is only one per user. There are still 2 or so before the public (in store) release assuming 2 months and that many units they need to produce about 1057 per day to get them to everyone. I'm not sure how many they can produce per day but that is a big number.

I agree it would be nice to have some sort of chart of number produced as well as a page you can enter your info into to see if it's shipped or not and get a tracking number. I know personally my worry is with the flood of email I get I will simply miss the email with the tracking number so would be nice to have a place to check.

    15. Steven O. on April 4, 2013

I am backer 103 and it's me and the crickets. I found my backer number in the "P.S." within the username registration email sent on 12/13/12.

    16. Steven Morlock on April 4, 2013

I see numerous folks referring to their backer number. Is there a way to determine that or is it done through approximation?

Guys/Gals, be patient! It's only been 8 months since the funding date, and the end result has many improvements over the original design (lacking concave thumbsticks though....).

Just imagine your OUYA is months away, and be pleasantly surprised if it comes earlier. Im sure they don't ship exclusively using backer number, Im sure there is some kind of bundling or shipping by region. The Pebble was shipped according to color due to the production process.

    26. David Markland on April 3, 2013

@Slegiar: Do you read Ouya's official communications? They still say a credit card will be required to download even demos. Maybe this policy hasn't been implemented yet, maybe this policy has changed, or maybe it was a typo. But the fact is, Ouya is officially still telling people a credit card will still be required to download demos/trials.

    27. Slegiar on April 3, 2013

@Alex: dude, do you even read the comments? that's not true at all! its been proven by those who have recieved their Ouya's already. you need a credit card....TO BUY GAMES. demos, free stuff, etc, does not need a card

I do not like the bit about "You'll need a credit/debit card to download games".
And by that I mean "I DON'T LIKE IT AT ALL"!
Maybe I wouldn't even have ordered one in the firstplace. I do not want my credit card number stored in any device connected to the internet. There must be a better way.

      Please consider alternatives!

So now we have to follow Ouya on KS, Reddit, Twitter, FB, their own forum, and probably some other places to keep abreast of what's happening.

Apparently OUYA is responding, but yea, trough the worst possible channels (please, OUYA team & everybody else reading this, social media comes across as very unprofessional, you have a site, a blog, a kickstarter page, why the 'F' react on Reddit & twitter but not on your own sites)

Also, we're 4 (work-)days further and people at backer# ~1200 didnt get shipping info yet? i totally understand the worried replies related to shipping, after all these weird 'direction changes' im not sure i can cope with getting the limited edition after the retail release.

Formula for when your Ouya will ship -

If you say 55,000 out of the about 63,416 backers bought the console then 55,000 divided by the number of days from the release date and the end of April, which according to Ouya is when everyone will get their Ouyas. Let's just say they ship this many units by then - 63416/34=1865.174647 units per day.

      *34 days - (March 28th - April 30th 2013)

      my backer number = 40,645/1865.174647= 21.5 days.

*My backer number is not that, it is in the 40,000s though. I couldn't be bothered looking it up.

Use this formula to work out your Ouya ship out date.

Actually you can see on the side of their Kickstarter page how many pledged to what...whoops.
So number of backers minus people actually getting consoles =
      63416-2668 = 60748.
      40,645 /1786.70588 = 22.7485689

    35. Danj3ris on April 3, 2013

I am backer number 61874. I'd like to thank all of you for the beta testing you will be doing to make sure my Ouya works better than yours does. ;)

@davidmay I am quite sad after reading your comment. My backer number is in the 40,000s and if number 2000 still hasn't shipped then it will a long time before I get mine. Can you please post an update when you receive your shipping confirmation so at least that way we can get an indication of how fast shipping is happening. Thanks.

    39. David May on April 2, 2013

So my backer number is in the low 2,000 What number are they at now?

    40. Harry Torque on April 2, 2013

For people who are already complaining about the shipping dates: while it is possible that some of us will get our Ouya just before launch, you need to understand there wouldn't be an Ouya in the first place without our pledges.

Kickstarter is not a pre-order facility.

@Daniel Ah ok, ill just wait for some more reports then, thanks though! :)
And yea lets just sit on this CC ordeal a little longer, your initial response should have at least calmed 90% of the backers down a bit.

@All, just found my backer number, 50708?! lol, im pretty sure i backed in the first few days? ah well, guess ill see mine somewhere around july? :P At least now i know it wont help to sit around anxiously waiting, thats a plus too.

    47. Daniel Rodriguez on April 2, 2013

@Olivier I only ordered the single controller,so can't speak as to how or when extra controllers are shipping, sorry!

As for the CC stuff, that's a fair point. I actually haven't put in my CC info into it at all yet, and am actually waiting on a system update or two to see if that changes. As of right this moment, the console has at no point required me to put in a credit card or any payment info, unless I try to buy anything. I'll keep an eye on that, and if any system updates change that, I'll let you folks know.

@CrazedHatter - You should get a shipping confirmation email with a DHL tracking number from Ouya when your console ships, if your experience is anything like mine. If you haven't gotten one yet, check your spam folders and such just in case, if nothing there, then your console probably hasn't shipped yet. Here's hoping the Ouya folks will provide some kinda 'we've shipped X amount of consoles so far!' update soon.

@Dave - Nachos it is! You guys might have to bring your own extra controllers though. >.>
