OUYA Devs jam worldwide, CREATE 166 game prototypes in 10 days

Not much longer to wait for your OUYA... and everything’s looking good. At OUYA HQ we’re starting to see games, games, games.

We shipped our developer consoles on time, so developers could get developing -- and our software package to make games has already been downloaded by developers 22,000 times.

A couple weeks ago, with our friends at Kill Screen, we launched a 10-day “game jam” called CREATE that challenged teams to make game prototypes for OUYA. We’re writing to all of you today so we can share the 166 entries. You can check them all out here.

If you find one you like, let your friends know. Sharing your favorites will help developers win recognition, prizes and get them one step closer to finishing their OUYA game.

We’ve selected a crack team of industry pros to pick the winners, like Phil Fish of Fez, Felicia Day of The Guild, and more. They'll choose from a variety of compelling game prototypes. We're seeing dungeon crawlers, action RPGs, brawlers, 4-player shooters, TCGs, platformers, word games, puzzlers and some other cool stuff ya just can’t put in a category.

Dev teams hail from all over the world – from France to Canada, Germany to New Zealand, U.S.A. to South Africa and more! Whoa. We will announce winners in a couple of weeks.

If this is what OUYA developers can do in 10 days, imagine what they can do once OUYA is out in the wild...

Taking it one day at a time,

Oh, and P.S. If you didn’t already hear, we’ve improved our controller based on feedback from OUYA developers. Thanks to these brave warriors, OUYA keeps getting better.

    6. Nikita Moiseev on January 31, 2013

How do you change your shipping address for when the consumer version of the Ouya comes out?

    7. Craig Elliott on January 29, 2013

There are a few interesting games on there. I personally can't wait to see if Starbound makes it to the OUYA.

      lightgun game for ouya anyone?
that would be a whole heap of awesome, saying that though, lightgun controller for ouya? Could someone get an existing one working or would it need a purpose built ouya lightgun.

For me the this console is all about retro and arcade style games, a lightgun is an essential part of that :)

Hey guys. Now getting to that point where I've started dreaming about receiving my OUYA. Exciting stuff. Just a thought: are some of your developers integrating with these guys:

    14. Melon Bread on January 28, 2013

TCGs!? Now you got me interested

    15. Valentino Perez on January 28, 2013

Thanks for the change on the analogy switched with cross. Also, if you could leave room for a charge dock on the controller would be great. Although if you can not, I have an idea...can you open you controller to Razer USA ltd. for a custom or modded controllers. Maybe even have them make a modded unit. All in all, great work keep doing the magic you do!

Great update to share. Let's us see pictures of the new controller soon.

"Be respectful and considerate" <thats what it says...

stop asking for Tegra 4 as its a completely different chipset.

    18. Baldwin90 on January 28, 2013

As much as I would LOVE them to use Tegra 4, I know that they would never be able to do this so near the release date. Also, Tegra 4 is going to be expensive at first. Give it time

It's way too late for Tegra 4 guys. It would introduce too many variables, issues and bugs this late in the game. Personally I'm hoping for a new Ouya every 18mths to 2 years (as long as the unit takes off), so chances are the next version of the console will have a Tegra 4, unless something more viable comes out in the meantime.

Like others have stated, I would also prefer a concave top on the thumbsticks. The X360 thumbsticks are awesome, and the PS2/3 sticks are uncomfortable if you ask me. The GameCube stick worked, though, so I guess it’s not a very big deal as long as they’re still reasonably flat. Still, concave tops would be much preferred. :D

No disc D-pad? We get a cross D-pad instead?! Oh man. I cut my teeth on Intellivision. I was really looking forward to that.

@ Baldwin90 Yes, and some of his twitter posts. He dumps on PC gaming, he doesn't care about open platforms, he doesn't care about OUYA. I don't respect his opinion on games. He also threatens himself and other people, pretty unpleasant.

Felicia Day is a pretty good actor and voice actor, but just look at the TGS podcast she was on in October, she's not much of a gamer, nothing wrong with that, but seems odd for her to be described as a crack industry pro. Her celebrity is valuable though, so I guess it's understandable in her case.

    23. Bear Cruz on January 28, 2013

Tegra 4 please! That would be awesome!

    24. Sharthan on January 28, 2013

Please upgrade to Tegra 4 :)
I'll be happy to pay extra just to have a console that lasts longer.

@AndrewRae you watched Indie Game: The Movie as well?

    32. Tyrus Peace on January 28, 2013

Just a quick note to alleviate some confusion: I think most devs did work 10 days or less for CREATE, but the rules didn't state that it was a 10 day game jam. The original announcement said devs were "welcome to start working immediately" and this is is the only bit in the rules that mentions any time limit: "The Prototype must have been created between January 7, 2013, and January 23, 2013." ( , 4.iii).

It was a very cool jam, though! Thanks for the great challenge and opportunity, and thanks to all the folks working hard to make Unity on OUYA great!

I definitely like the redesign on the controller, the one thing I haven't been able to find word on though, are the trigger buttons Analog or Digital?

I'm going to take the time to look at every one of these games, cause I suspect even the ones that don't win will show up on Ouya eventually.

    34. Jeffrey Johnson on January 28, 2013

Very cool! Please convince the Mark of the Ninja Team to recreate their game on OUYA!

    35. Travis Simpson on January 28, 2013

      Excellent, I'm super excited!
