15 hours to go...

Posted by OUYA (Creator)

We’ve made it! We’re counting down our final hours on Kickstarter, and at 10 p.m. PT tonight, we’ll be celebrating. But until then, it’s business as usual. We’ve got jobs to do, people! And the first order of business is updating you on some new developments.

---

GAME NEWS

Lots of you have asked for more details on the games that OUYA will support at launch. After all, we are a game console, it makes sense that we’d be talking games!

We’ve purposely been pretty tight lipped about our launch slate, but throughout our Kickstarter run, we’ve been having some exciting conversations behind the scenes. We’d love to fill you in on everything, but it’s just not possible. (And we’d have some legal teams coming after us!) That said, we’ve got great news from NAMCO BANDAI to share:

"NAMCO BANDAI Games and OUYA are currently in active discussions to bring some of the world's biggest gaming properties to the exciting new open gaming platform. NAMCO BANDAI brings with it a rich history of iconic gaming franchises, from classics like PAC-MAN and GALAGA, to seminal franchises like TEKKEN and Ridge Racer, and we're excited to explore how we can work with OUYA to bring some great titles to the forthcoming console."
-- Carlson Choi, Vice President of Marketing, NAMCO BANDAI Games America, Inc.

I know what I want from Namco Bandai on OUYA but we want to hear from you. Head to the Namco/OUYA Facebook page, and cast your vote for any games you’d like to see.

FOUR CONTROLLER SUPPORT

In response to a lot of the feedback we’ve received: OUYA will officially support up to four controllers. After all, what’s the point of playing in the living room if the other folks on the couch can’t join in?

IMPORTANT: If you want your four controllers to arrive in March when your console ships--and this is particularly important for those of you ordering the limited edition--please make sure to update your pledge today so that everything arrives at the same time. (For example: Those who pledged $99 for a console with one controller, can add on another $90 to receive an additional three controllers in March, rounding out the set of four. And--because we know you’ll ask--if you’ve got your heart set on the limited edition version, we’ll make sure that the controllers are matched.)

---

PLEX

In addition to this gaming news, we at OUYA want to acknowledge that there are two sides to every coin. You’re either a morning person or a night person. (But not both.) Celtics fan or Lakers fan. (Maybe neither.) Horde or Alliance. Superman or Batman. Sith or Jedi. (You see where this is going.)

So, while tons of you were super psyched yesterday to hear that we’d support XBMC, many Plex loyalists clamored for Plex support on OUYA. We think they’ll be happy to hear that OUYA will support Plex. Why not try to please everyone?

WRAP UP

Lastly, we have some final statements as we close the curtains on our last Kickstarter update.

We’re in the final stretch. Yesterday was a big day. In fact, we sold out of the $225 reward level entirely. There will be 2,500 people (Only. Ever.) with their own names carved into these puppies. Pretty cool. The personalized name etching might as well read: Big Spender. Because that’s what we’ll be thinking when we see it in your living room!

It’s worth noting that we’ve also sold out of the Developers Special reward ($699). That means 600 developers can look forward to receiving a first-run OUYA (already rooted) in December. With that comes EARLY SDK ACCESS, an extra controller, and we'll help you get started. On top of that, gamers will know you because your games will be marked with a FOUNDER EMBLEM and we’ll be helping you on the promotional side for a year.

When Kickstarter ends tonight at 10 p.m. PT, the OUYA team will be celebrating together. It’s been a lot of work, and a wild 29-day ride, but we are so grateful for the support. Our first toast will be dedicated to you, the backers who made OUYA possible.

After that, it’s back to work. We’ve got aggressive goals and we’re going to deliver. We’ll continue to push for the best content and coolest features we can bring to our little magic box. We’ll keep you apprised of the controller as it takes shape. We’ll continue to interact with you via Facebook, reddit, Twitter, Google+ and of course, our soon-to-come homepage at www.ouya.tv. And we’ll continue to listen to your requests, and answer your questions.

We cannot emphasize enough how much your actions and attitudes have influenced us. You’ve taken our dreams and made them your own, and together we will make them real.

With that, I tip my hat to you, our backers/founders/friends.

Thank you.

Great news about the extra controller support! But it would be really great to get some good co-op games to use them with. Split-screen co-op is very rare these days, unfortunately....

How much will controllers be after launch?

    3. Viktor Lundmark on

This would be an excellent opportunity to bring back the classic Soul blade, the first game in the Soul Calibur series. Just tidy up the graphics a bit and it'll be a perfect edition to the Ouya library. :)

    4. Rafael Lima de Souza on

GREAT GREAT GREAT news about the 4 controller support! Unfortunately I am in a tight budget right now, but if I could buy, say, 3 extra controllers in october so in march my Ouya would come with 4 controllers, I would do it :D Though I know this isn't easy to do it.... so I'll probably have to wait 'til Ouya is oficially released to buy my extra controllers.

But this is awesome news :D

    5. Ninjabear on

I've ordered the $99 + $20 shipping version. I live in the UK so what about power plugs? I will need to know how to plug it in in the UK otherwise I might break it.

Also, are all features expected to have worldwide support? I would hate to only get limited access due to it being an American-only machine. Thanks.

Can we get 4 controllers with the developper Special? Also can we get the special brown edition as a developper? Thanks you, I am eager to try this developper unit in december :D.

    7. SteeScribbles on

      How are the controllers powered?

    8. Aureliano Fazio Baiz on

I was wondering just for curiosity.
Do i get to reserve my username now that i pledged $190 or do i have to add more.

    9. Rand Chua TL on

Yes more great news for us. Happy to know it support 4 players.

    10. Loren K. on

Thanks for news about a possible Namco Bandai partnership. Dark Souls is the game that springs to mind from their library of published games. Maybe From Software, who knew how to deliver with Demons/Dark Souls could deliver an equally gamercentric game for the Ouya.

Ace Combat, Tekken, Katamari, Pac Man, Ridge Racer, Soulcalibur. I want them all!!! lol

@Michael Matzat um no not a one without a LAN party

Could you do an update on how you intend to bring Ouya to retail? Like which markets it is intended to launch? After all, the console can only be a success if adoption is far higher than just us backers.

Ok, just one question (the big one for me right now):

do I have to add 20 bucks for shipping (living in europe) for the 225$ pledge ("Kickstarter exclusive")?

    15. Salvador Hernandez on

@Yang Zhou: The Tegra 3 is more powerful than the Wii (from what I've read). And a good number of the Wii's games are 4 player games.

People, it's not that hard. Add $30 per controller to whatever pledge tier you've chosen. And another $20 for shipping outside the states.

So good! Now add Oculus Rift support and you got yourself a goddamn deal! :D

    17. Michael Matzat on

Dossent every other console already suport up to 8 controlers?

    18. Haven Luckenbill on

I'd absolutely love to see some of the "Tales" games, I've never played any but keep hearing more about them being great RPGs! Also would be ecstatic to see an Armored Core game show up.

    19. Missing avatar

      Klaus Jonke on

@Luke: and it says "Same shipping costs" for the "Kickstarter exclusive reward tier". Same as in same for everyone or same as in same as in the lower tiers. That's not really obvious to me - so I'd like to see an official reply to that.

    20. OUYA Creator on

Mike - just manage your pledge - $30 for each additional controller. If you are part of the $225 tier, we'll etch them all.

    21. Vigilance Press on

Can we please get Namco's "Tales" series on this console, now that Namco/Bandai are involved? Tales of Vesperia was never released on the PS3, and I'd LOVE to play it on something other than the Xbox. :)

      Andreas Setterlind on

Plex is not open source so does not fit the philosophy or spirit of OUYA! :(

I highly suggest that OUYA only promote XBMC and forget about Plex :P

    23. M on

Ouya now gets Four-Controller support, pretty awesome. You mention the 99 dollar pledgers need to manage their pledges and add an additional 90 dollars to get 4 controllers at launch. What about the $225 pledgers, will they also need to add money to get 4 controllers?

    24. Sam Hughes on

Duh, Namco. Don't know why I read that as Konami :p

    25. Mark on

Nevermind my previous post. Didn't read close enough!

    26. Jaidek on

Congrat's team OUYA! I can honestly say I haven't been so geeked about a console in a while. I am really looking forward to you guys "changing the game".

    27. Missing avatar

      Luke Jacobson on

@klaus it says under each earlier tier (that includes a console) "add $20 for shipping outside the US." If your in the US it doesn't cost anything extra to ship.

    28. OUYA Creator on

For extra controllers - you can always manage/update your pledge. Just add $30 for each additional controller. If you are part of the Kickstarter Exclusive reward tier ($225) you will be able to get the additional controllers etched as well.

    29. Mark on

I just want one more controller as I rarely get a group of 4 together to play. How much do I add for just 1 extra?

    30. Missing avatar

      Prizm on

Just out of curiosity, where do you guys think they'd put the IR receiver? They'd have to redesign the front of the box because IR needs line-of-sight. Or they'd have to waste the single USB port for an IR dongle. I really don't see this happening.

I think people will just have to use the controller, which I'm sure they'll adapt well for XBMC. Maybe built-in IR is an option they can consider for Ouya 2 (assuming all goes well). Personally I wouldn't mind paying $99 every 18 months or so for an updated Ouya console (again, if it's a success).

    31. Missing avatar

      Klaus Jonke on

I pledged 225 - now the big question: do I have to add 20 bucks for shipping? Because it states "Same shipping costs", a notion that is not to be found on any lower tier. And: if I just add 60 bucks do you guys know, that I want 4 controllers instead of only 2? And are they also etched with my user name? And where do I have to apply for my user name (since I don't want to use my real name as user name)?

    32. Zackery Douglas on

      > Those who pledged $99 for a console with one controller, can add on another $90 to receive an additional three controllers in March, rounding out the set of four. And--because we know you’ll ask--if you’ve got your heart set on the limited edition version, we’ll make sure that the controllers are matched.

Maybe I missed something, but I wasn't aware the US $99 base-pledges were receiving the brown brushed metal console? Will someone educate me? If it is the limited edition version, I'm willing to bump-up my pledge for the extra three controllers and spread the Ouya.

Man the cash keeps rolling in! Less than 24 hours ago, I was hoping Ouya would crack 7 million, now it's at 7.7m.

      Dan Mensinger on

Just pledged $130 for the OUYA and extra controller. This looks promising. I as well want to see some "old school" 2D style games like Castlevania & Contra thrown into the mix, or even better yet, highly detailed RPGs that focus more on the story and game play than the graphics. Regardless of that though, I think myself, and definitely my kids, will have fun with this thing. Can't wait!

    35. Missing avatar

      Jimmy on

I really hope this gets an IR receiver, I can't imagine the cost would go up too much, and I bought in once I heard that it would support XBMC. Now with Plex support, it seems like a no-brainer. Don't even need an IR remote, I have plenty of those, just the receiver.

    36. Darryl Benson on

Wow, way to answer everyone's requests! You've been doing great! Can't wait for some Tekken hopefully on this box. Ridge Racer would be fine too (if it's not like the Vita game). Maybe some Soul Calibur? Even a port of the 2nd one would be awesome.

Can't wait till your site is up and operational. Keep proving to the naysayers that you're here to stay. Congrats on all your success Ouya!

      Prizm on

@Damian - to my understanding, if you go for the Limited Edition Ouya, you still get the perks of the lower tiers, such as the Founder's Emblem and a reserved username.
I too have ordered a Limited Edition + two controllers shipped to Australia.

    38. Stijn Anthoni on

      @Michael $140 + $20 (shipping) + ($30 x controllers) :)

    39. Michael Parry on

I pledged $140 for the Limited Edition Backer Exclusive BROWN BRUSHED METAL FINISH OUYA.
I live outside of the US so I added $30 for shipping and a second controller. If I want 4 controllers total, what exactly am i supposed to pledge?

      Michael V. Parent on

The point of this device is that its open for indie developers as well as the big guns like Square and Namco. You're not the only one who wants original 2d games in the flavor of Metroidvania and Contra. The more you support the device the more likely such a thing will happen.. But I must say its already highly likely.

    41. NiNJACQUES on

Congratz guys. I cannot friggin wait for my console.

    42. Peter Benoit on

@Emil Lundberg, I changed my contribution to 225+60, so I am hoping I get 4 named etched controllers.

    43. Carlos on

OK, this update is awesome and unexpected

    44. Sam Hughes on

OUYA would be the perfect platform for a new 2D Contra or Castlevania game. Hopefully they look into new titles and not just porting existing games. I don't need another crappy Frogger game or another port of the X-Men Arcade game.

    45. Ber on

@Shawn they're only announcing support for it, not that it will be built-in. If you don't like it, don't install it. It won't take up any space then!

    46. Luke Bishop on

      Crazy numbers! Good work people!

    47. Eddie E. Givens, Jr. on

Pledged my $225. Geez, I wish I would have had more to give. But glad I made the pledge yesterday. The $225 option is SOLD OUT! O.o I'm EXCLUSIVE BABY! Glad I could be a part of this revolutionary gaming system. Looking forward to developing for it. Good by Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. Tired of getting screwed with rehashed over hyped and overly expensive tired games. We want new experiances, new gameplay, new IP, and a NEW cost bracket for our games. Thank you Ouya team for changing the game. :)

    48. Emil Lundberg on

      D'oh. Of course I mean $225+60.
