Update #7

Final Fantasy comes to OUYA

We’ve been saying that OUYA will offer all kinds of games.

This morning, we are honored to announce that OUYA is partnering with Square Enix to bring you one of the most beloved franchises in gaming -- Final Fantasy. We will kick this off with Final Fantasy III, which will be a launch title on OUYA. This will be the first time gamers outside of Japan can play FFIII on their televisions through a console.

But that’s not the end of it: We’re promising to deliver Final Fantasy III like you’ve never seen it before – Hironobu Sakaguchi’s third installment in the role playing game franchise will be updated to exploit OUYA’s high-definition resolution in glorious graphic detail. For those of you who are new to Final Fantasy, we’ll offer a free demo so you can give it a go!

Previously unreleased in the U.S. until it appeared as a 3D remake for the Nintendo DS in 2006, Final Fantasy III was widely referred to as one of the “missing pieces” in the FF series. OUYA players can now proudly claim this piece of the puzzle.

We’re thrilled to bring this storied franchise to OUYA.

I generally don't like FF remakes. I'd rather just play the fan translated FFIII through an emulator on the Ouya but this is good news, I knew everyone is not like me.

Final Fantasy VII on the device, what a dream come true it would be. With texture packs and high res models - From the old PS era rising to appear once again on TV and conquering the new and old generation of RPGamers. Shame that SE will probably not allow that for quite some time..

This is a huge win! Can we do all of them? I mean FFVII would be the holy grail, but at least all of the games up to PS3 should be produceable right? On a scale of 1-10 how possible would it be for square to allow you to release a slightly higher res version fo FF7 but with an add on pack/expansions.

I cannot explain how cool this would be. You could offer people limited edition materia for buying on the launch dates of the game and any subsequent expansions. People would absolutely pay a few dollars more to buy on opening day with the bonus/super cool materia (or weapons).

@ Cody Cronno Trigger is also a win.

I've played most of the Final Fantasy series, and I liked FFVI,( released as FF3 her in the USA), as by far the best story wise, just my 2 cents worth, LOL.

@Kurenka: FF6 is one of the best mate. Really worth a go. I loved every second of it when I bought the re-release on the PSX all those years ago!

Love it or hate it (personally I LOVE the FF series), Final Fantasy (and the entire partnership with SE really) on the OUYA is a MASSIVE coup.
Amongst the millions of FF fans I'd say the majority came in (like me) at FF7. While I have played earlier versions, apart from FF6, have been on handhelds so getting to see FF3 (and hopefully others!) will be amazing, especially with the update mentioned graphically. (Please no one mention about a FF7 remake with updated graphics, yes most FF fans would love to see that but I'm tired of people going on and on about it lol. SE know about this, and if they are gonna do it, they will!)

@SilentS: Honestly, with the open platform, I suspect there will be several very neat retro-style RPG's in development for the Ouya. The doors have been opened for the creative masses. :)

Creator SilentS on August 9, 2012

Looks like I will be the minority here. As much as I would like to have any FF game BEFORE FF7 (overrated IMO), I would rather see some Dragon Quest/Warrior games added. There are other old school RPG's aside from the Final Fantasy series that needs to be revived.

Final Fantasy 7 or bust! You have to port that game over to the OUYA. You would be a successful console just based on that game alone.

As a few others have said, it would be really great if OUYA allows access to the games that you have bought in the google store. Many existing games already support gamepads and should be really playable on the OUYA. Hopefully we wont have to re-purchase our existing games. Maybe OUYA could have a version of the play store that only lets you download apps you have already purchased on another device (as opposed to letting you browse the full play store).

@blonigen and what? they got 5 bucks off. as some one that was an early bird that gave it up in the first day so some one else could afford a console in the limited run that was being severly limited in number. and paying over double for my teir jump... do i not deserve something for backing this then? I get a console with a few little perks but not many. i backed an idea not a gimie gimie. I dont see a cash grab. i think people are complaining about nothing. Also vevo is costing you people nothing. Until game developers will sack up and throw in this is what we get to expect.

      @Benjamin Steinert
It's always easy to look at things in hindsight and act like like a genius and say that it was easy to see something coming that eventually happened. And while this one did take off, that isn't always the case and you can't know for sure until happens. And not all of the early birds "stumbled" across this, and even those that did, still "took a chance" when the numbers sold were in the 100s, not the tens of thousands that make it clear NOW that this will likely be a winner.

Also, if you think that this is past the point of needing some word of mouth from the early adopters, including everyone in this kickstarter, you are wrong. And IMO this cash grab is not how you keep everyone in your camp.

This is the third time I've posted this explanation, so sorry for the repetition. But as you may have noticed there are some who totally fail to get the point. The issue with buttons has NOTHING to do with whether you like a certain other console, or learning to play as a player, or whether the OUYA labels are cool, or cutesy, or whatever. The issue is that in the absence of a clear button priority different developers will guess differently--note that A (first letter), O (first letter of OUYA, or from the German OK), Y (for yes), green (xbox), bottom (xbox, western playstation), and right (japanese playstation) are all arguably valid guesses (personally I'd say Y was a stretch, but then I'd also say O for OK is ridiculous but it has already been seriously suggested). And anyone who played both Japanese and Western games on a playstation can tell you that switching back and forth is annoying. It's like when the mouse buttons are reversed. No this is not a huge issue. But it is a COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE issue. (sorry for all caps, but notice that I'm following the golden rule since the self-styled heroes who are trying to 'rescue' Ouya from all the unappreciative 'bitching' that 'trolls' like me are engaged in, they all seem to like all caps, and this post is for them)

While I understand that the amount of money this project has raised is only an indicator of "pre-orders" in order to aid manufacturing cost reduction, I do feel that it would be nice to reward us for showing so much affection to the project. While Square Enix and OnLive and VEVO are big news, that would be something that is expected of a console developer and are things that will help put it more on par with big names like Xbox and PS. Since your backers have given you the confidence in the console, rewards such as ModKits or Advanced DevKits available to purchase on release would be a pleasant addition to your repertoire. I think our main worry as backers is that (while understandable) it's difficult to show support for a project when we still know VERY little about it. Just ranting here. Sorry if I pushed any buttons
