Like Kai, the little boy shown above who becomes our story's narrator- Djamila is a one-month-old baby girl who was born with clubfoot. Despite facing pressure and rejection from her family and community, Djamila's young parents Murna and Musa are determined to find a cure for their daughter. Our story is based on numerous case studies around the world, and we hope to bring light to the truth that clubfoot is a curable disability through affordable and effective methods.

Clubfoot is one of the most frequently occurring manifestations of physical disability worldwide. Even though early treatment using the Ponseti Method is readily available, affordable, and has a 96% success rate, Clubfoot still often goes untreated in many parts of the world. This is due in large part to insufficient parent awareness and education, as well as cultural stigma. 75% of mothers in Kenya who give birth to a child with a disability, have experienced rejection by their husband and/or family members. And employment opportunities are often limited for adults whose Clubfoot goes untreated. We must try to challenge perceptions and empower families with the knowledge they need to help their children born with Clubfoot.

InvestED creates and deploys compelling content that drives behavior change related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are social entrepreneurs, technologists, educators, artists, consultants and ecosystem builders.

We have proof of concept that our content leads to behavior change. Women who watch our pregnancy care videos are more likely to deliver their babies with skilled birth attendants and seek antenatal care, and borrowers who watch our entrepreneurship videos are more likely to repay loans.

For this Clubfoot video we will create an animated short that shows mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends, etc:

  • How to identify Clubfoot
  • What happens when someone with Clubfoot becomes an adult
  • What the Ponseti Method is
  • Use mobile technology to help direct them to the nearest clinic offering the Ponseti method.

Kayee is the Chief Creative Officer at InvestED and oversees all production of creative content. Kayee has worked in Arusha, Tanzania where she oversaw the production of a 13-episode financial literacy comic series, to be distributed throughout East Africa. She has worked in feature film production at Dreamworks Animation, and today she partners with artists and entrepreneurs to develop the artistic design strategy of InvestED's mobile app.

John Roberts is a serial social entrepreneur. He has spent 10 years growing non-profit, hybrid and for-profit models with a focus in sub-Saharan Africa. John is also an expert in online education with regards to the African market. The various ventures he has co-founded have raised over one million dollars in philanthropic and social impact investment capital. John co-founded and ran the Open University of West Africa (OUWA). He has consulted for the World Bank (on entrepreneurship education in Ghana) and the University of California at Irvine (on establishing an African focused research institute).

Ayuma is a Professional Storyteller with 8 years of experience in the fields of Broadcast Journalism (Radio), Newspaper and Magazine Writing, Public Relations, Humanitarian Communication and Theatre Acting. Ayuma has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Daystar University with a double concentration in Electronic Media and Public Relations. Charles is a multimedia developer with expertise in 2D and 3D animation. He has worked for Tinga-Tinga Tales, a joint Walt Disney and Tiger Aspect production, where he led two teams in the production of 52 ten-minute episodes for television which won several BAFTA awards; as well as Royal Media Services, where he revamped Citizen TV’s station graphics, and KTN Television.

Joe is a multidisciplinary multimedia producer. He wears the hats of animator, filmmaker & photographer. Prior to joining InvestED, Joe worked at the leading tech hub in East Africa the iHub as a multimedia content producer for 5 years. Today he specializes in 2D animation, motion graphics, character animation & editing.

Randy is an animator currently based in Nairobi, Kenya. He received a degree in Film and Animation, having majored in animation. He is versed in both 3D and 2D animations. He has been doing animations for different companies as a freelance for about three years where he designed a number of motion graphics both in 3D and 2D. He interned at KTN Television developing montages and different designs for the station.

5 years ago, our co-Founder John Roberts moved to West Africa to start a university with online courses. He quickly realized that the content available wasn't applicable to the population we wanted to reach: grassroots entrepreneurs. And thus, InvestED was born through the desire to create a learning platform using the right content, tech, impact, and adoption rates. Today, InvestED is the evolution of decades of work by dozens of people. We have come together to contribute towards the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We are social entrepreneurs, technologists, artists, consultants and ecosystem builders who are invested in the future of humanity.

Risks and challenges

Our team has a proven track record of making effective, story-driven animated videos in regional languages. The biggest risk is that it isn't well received in the markets where we want to disseminate it. But we have to try. Clubfoot ruins lives, and it doesn't need to.

As a for-profit social enterprise, InvestED must only create content people pay us for. Some of our customers include the World Bank, the Government of Liberia, Tala, and USAID. Some challenges we would like to address don't necessarily have a clear customer - so we are turning to Kickstarter. We are turning to you.
