We've reached our target with just under two weeks to go! Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far, but don't worry there is still time to make a pledge, get your hands on our initial range of cards and be part of our founding story. We will invest any additional funds raised in Out of the Box Cards, delivering more cards that expand horizons.
Exceeding our target will enable us to:
- commission a beautiful, bespoke website that delivers more of what we need without monthly fees.
- launch our website with a wider range of card designs, and create even more during our first year, expanding the range beyond cards designed with girls in mind.
- promote our cards more intentionally, rather than only relying on friends and family to spread the word (although you're our best advocates so we'd love you to keep doing that too!)
- meet the extra costs in fulfilling all the additional pledges
So please keep sharing the idea, and if you haven't yet pledged, then please do!
We often buy cards for our nieces, cousins, friends and sisters, but it's usually a depressing experience. The cards on offer for girls depict them as pink and pretty, they are always passive and posing. These cards imply that what’s important about you is your appearance; you need to conform and fit in.
Young women are under enormous pressure to conform to a very stereotypical femininity and they need wisdom and guts to navigate that and remain true to themselves. We don't want to contribute in any way to the message that what’s most important about them is their appearance or their size, even through a poor choice of birthday card. The girls we know are intelligent, creative, bold and full of potential. We want to celebrate all that's amazing about them, not put limits on who they are and what they might become.
So we're creating a range of cards, designed with girls in mind, that expand their horizons and assume they are adventurous, active and brave. When a girl receives an Out of the Box card, she'll know that someone believes in her and sees her potential. When you send an Out of the Box card, you're speaking affirmation into a girl's life and celebrating who she is. You're showing her a world outside the pink and fluffy box that society offers her.
We've created our first eighteen designs for girls and women of different ages to give you a taste of what Out of the Box Cards will produce when we are fully launched. We can't wait to get people sending them! Support our kickstarter and you'll give us a head-start on our first year of business, so we can spread our cards far and wide.
Out of the Box cards will be printed on Callistro 300gsm matt FSC card. We'll only package them in clear display bags when that's absolutely necessary, and when we do the bags will be biodegradable.
For younger girls, there are birthday number cards that show them playing sports and having fun. Eventually, we'll do number cards from one to 12, and each will be available with girls from different ethnicities, but for now we've done ages three to six.
Inspired by Herstory, four of our cards show women from the past who surpassed expectations and achieved amazing things. There's a short bio on the back of each card that tells you more about them. You could send these to a budding performer, a curious scientist, a passionate activist or a keen sports player to show her what's possible.
We're honoured to have words from four incredible female poets on cards for older girls or adults - Vanessa Kisuule, Hollie McNish, Bridget Minamore and Erin Bolens - with a section of the poem on the back.
These four cards have the words 'You may not always feel it, but this is what I see in you' inside, and enable you to affirm great qualities in the people you love.
And finally two more cards, including the idea that started this all off.
We're not just asking you to preorder cards; we want you to help us set up a business. Backing our kickstarter will:
- set us up for our first year in business, giving us a head start to build on
- give us a stock of cards to sell and use in promotion
- allow us to create a website to sell cards online
- enable us to create more designs regularly throughout 2019
- send us to our first trade fair next year
- start us marketing the cards and selling them through shops and other outlets
We'll fulfil the pledges in January 2019 and we'll have the website up and running in Spring 2019, when we'll also have our launch party in London. We'll keep our supporters up to date with our progress, so you'll have plenty of notice of our launch date.
Of course, you can send these cards to anyone - not just girls. Boys need affirmation too. All of us are subject to limiting gender stereotypes and we have lots of ideas of how to expand our range to include cards for lots of different occasions and audiences, which this kickstarter will enable us to do. But we're starting with girls because we would have loved cards like these when we were younger, and we want to be able to send them to the women we love now!
We know that tackling gender inequality needs changes at macro and micro levels, within structures, communities and individuals. We need legislation that protects equality for women and men, we need women and men who are modelling healthy lives and we need the transformation of hearts and minds. A birthday card is a micro intervention in the life of a girl, but it's an excellent opportunity to open up her world and strengthen your relationship with her - and who knows where that could lead?
Risks and challenges
Our cards are all designed and we have had samples printed, so we are confident that we have excellent quality products to sell. We have run focus groups to find out what people think of our ideas, and have got some really constructive feedback. The first focus group gave us the idea for the number cards. The second helped us rethink the poet's cards, and made us realise how much we love them!
Between us we have experience of delivering different types of projects so we know how to work to deadlines and deliver what is promised.
All of us work or study full-time, so the biggest challenge will be delivering the project on top of our everyday responsibilities. But we know how to work hard, there's a team of us to share the load, and we believe in this project so we'll put the hours in to make it happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
