About

OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE - PROMOTIONAL TRAILER

A COMING OUT, COMING OF AGE MUSICAL

Out of My Comfort Zone debuted off-Broadway as a stage musical to sold-out audiences in New York and in London, and is now in post-production as an independent feature film.

Josh and Rachel's close friendship is tested when a school cyberbully threatens to expose secrets in this modern coming out, coming of age feature film musical set in a New York City school. Out of My Comfort Zone explores stereotypes and the struggles teens face when first finding their social and emotional comfort zones.

A STRONG STATEMENT AGAINST BULLYING

Written by husband-and-wife team Ivy Vale (book, lyrics and music) and Rick Reil (music), Out of My Comfort Zone was conceived out of a desire to do something in response to the bullying epidemic and rise in youth suicide.

“We were driven to write Out of My Comfort Zone as a way of making a strong statement against bullying, specifically bullying that targets any child or teen who may be perceived as gay or identify as LGBTQ,” states writer and director, Ivy Vale. “There is clearly a need for reality-based material for teens who want to see shows and films that reflect their own lives and deliver characters they can relate to.”

The mission of the project is to open up dialogues within families, provide a safe way for kids to talk to their parents about how they are treated at school, and prevent young people from falling into depression and suicide. Children need support and are afraid to ask for it. We must address this issue through art. Out of My Comfort Zone addresses this through music, humor and relatable teenage characters.

"People like avoiding conflict. They don't want to stand out too much, so they play it safe. Out of My Comfort Zone challenges this concept, promoting self-confidence and loving unashamedly." - Theater Development Fund

FROM STAGE MUSICAL TO SCREEN: "A SINGING, DANCING POWERHOUSE" - THE HUFFINGTON POST

Out of My Comfort Zone debuted off-Broadway as a stage musical with The Children’s Acting Company in NYC in 2015 and had two successful, limited runs.

The Huffington Post praised the show, calling it, "A singing, dancing powerhouse punctuated by dialogue that feels true and real." Press included: Playbill.com (front page and feature), NY1 News, The Advocate, GLAAD, Huffington Post (two separate features), TheaterScene.net, Theater Development Fund (TDF.org), Broadway World, and more.

In March 2018, the stage musical premiered in London, UK, with an all-British cast at The Redbridge Drama Centre for a sold-out run. Back by demand, the UK touring production returned for more shows in October 2018 in London & The Isle of Man.

Risks and challenges

With a cast comprised solely of sixteen teenagers and a dedicated team primarily made up of women behind the scenes, our micro-budget feature film has faced risks and obstacles at every turn. We have met a multitude of challenges along the way that at times seemed insurmountable. Our determination to reach kids who feel marginalized and our passion to do something about school bullying has driven this project forward, sparking us to meet challenges head-on. The result of these efforts is an engaging, full-length feature film with broad appeal, in the early stages of post-production. With the help of Kickstarter and your generous support, we hope to secure funding to finish Out Of My Comfort Zone, submit to the 2019-2020 film festival season, and seek widespread distribution.
