About this project
We're Funded, Now What?
The Outlaw Kickstarter launch of the World’s Best Deck Screw is now complete, but the Screw Revolution has just STARTED! Here are three ways you can stay involved:
1. Check us out at www.outlawfasteners.com for pre-orders and places you can purchase The World’s Best Screws as they become available.
2. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
3. Tell your local contractor and building supply store to ask for Outlaw.
Tool Snob “It’s simply a great idea and in a perfect world would eliminate Phillips and the simply terrible and dreaded Robertson drives.”
Tool Guyd “I am crossing my fingers that this time next year I’ll be able to find these screws at my local big box store”
Reddit “Oh trust me, I already know that Robertson is the only screw worth a damn currently. But this? This I want to make babies with.”
Homefixated “We love the simplicity of a single bit, particularly one that appears to perform as well as the UniGrip does.”
Contractors Supply Magazine “The Outlaw Deck Screw is powered by the most technologically advanced drive ever introduced in the fastener industry.”
Tool Rank “…every once in a while I get an email about a new product, and it falls in the tool category, and its not lame; today that product is a new screw named Outlaw and its trying to start a revolution.”
And finally, a big THANKS to the Kickstarter Nation for helping us make this happen!
What is The World's Best Deck Screw?
If you've been screwing for a long time, then you are familiar with the pain and agony of stripping a screw, screws falling off of your bit and having to keep up with many different bit sizes for each job or project. If you are new to screwing, you won't have to experience any pain as you start to screw because we have solved these problems. We have created an innovative screw design that solves many of the lingering issues related to screwing and built the solutions into "The World's Best Deck Screw".
The Best Screw You'll Ever Experience.
The warm up is just like every other screw you've ever had (read: used). Dig one out of the box, put it on your bit, find the target and pull the trigger. Ok, so it's not exactly the same. You don't have to use two hands, the screw won't strip, wobble or fall off and you only need one bit. You won't have to bend over (to pick up the dropped screw), won't be compelled to use profanity and will not ever again have to worry about your screwing performance; a perfect screw, every time.
We Need Your Help to (Kick) Start the Screw Revolution!
You can help us start the screwing revolution by backing us and being a founder. You can help us rid the world of "poor performance screwing", lower the rage and build more cool stuff, faster.
We need to generate enough sales to have at least one truckload of deck screws produced (10,000 5lb boxes) to get the Screw Revolution started.
Your Backing + Screw Production = Screw Revolution.
Why Deck Screws?
Everybody wants a better deck (funny and true). A "deck screw" is really just a basic wood screw specifically designed to be used when attaching deck boards to a foundation board. We chose to introduce the Outlaw brand of screws with a deck board screw because of the multitude of technical problems associated with the current commercially available screw choices. When screwing down a deck board you are always (+/-) drilling down and this means the screw will drop off of your bit, unless you hold it on with your other hand and that... is a pain in the neck and back. The other screws have a tendency to wobble when you start to drill which can turn into a miss drilled hole or scratched deck board - both of which are really bad. The torque when drilling a deck screw is high and, when using other brands of deck screws, results in stripping the screw head, which means you have to manually unscrew the messed up screw with a pair of pliers. This sucks. Finally, many of the currently available screws require multiple sized bits for a 1" - 8" deck screw. We only need one.

Our Development Twist and Turns.
It all started with a problem. A problem that happens every time you use a screw, they strip. We were tired of dealing with stripped screws and set out to design a screw that solved this problem. Then we noticed more problems. So, we made a list of the problems with screwing and dove into creating a solution. Our development process looked something like this:
So, now we have a prototype screw that solves all of the problems we identified with a collection of innovative features and technology.
The Technology Behind the Screw.
Hold Tight Tech. The bit holds the screw without the use of magnets, which allows a user to drive a screw using only one hand. The advantage of this feature is the screw does not wobble or fall off of the bit, which saves the user time and the frustration of having to bend over and pick up a screw that fell off of his bit or climbing down a ladder to find a screw that fell off of his bit. This feature works on any type of material from stainless to steel to aluminum to plastic.
One Drive for All. The innovative drive system only requires the use of one bit for all screw sizes from 5/64”-1/2” and metric sizes M2-M12. The advantage of this feature is that most construction jobs or home projects require that you use multiple lengths and sizes of screws, which typically requires the use of multiple driving bits, which means you are constantly wasting your time changing bits and slowing down your progress. As an example, deck screws using the Torx drive require one Torx driver for a 2” deck screw and a completely different Torx driver for a 2.5” deck screw.
Eighteen Driving Points. The innovative drive system employs up to 18 points of contact between the screw head and the bit. The advantage of this feature is “camout” or “stripping” of the screw head is virtually eliminated and the multiple contact points create the highest torque to driver ratio in the world. As an example, the Philips drive, by design, is very prone to stripping and has infuriated many of its users (google “Philips Screws Suck”).
Coated or Stainless Steel. The Outlaw™ Deck Screw is available in coated steel or stainless steel, both of which makes the Outlaw™ Screw compatible for use with treated lumber, including ACQ (most deck boards are "treated" with a process that injects special chemicals into the wood to keep it from rotting and while these chemicals keep the board from rotting, they also can cause normal "un-coated" steel screws to rust prematurely).
Self-Drilling Screw Tip. The Type 17 cutting head allows the screw to be used without having to drill a pilot hole. The screw starts drilling into the wood with precision and saves time and aggravation.
BoardLock™ Technology. The Outlaw™ Deck Screws have the new “BoardLock™” technology featuring optimized thread length and a special ribbed thread located right above the screw thread. These high performance threads utilize 1/2 the length of the screw versus the traditional (and outdated) 2/3 of the screw length. The special ribbed thread feature cleans the deck board screw hole and allows the deck board to “lock” onto the joist without lifting. Combined, these two features create the “BoardLock™” technology that is utilized on all Outlaw™ Deck Screws.
1,000 Hour Salt Spray Test. The Outlaw™ Deck Screws have a special coating achieves the 1,000-hour salt spray test certification, which is exceeds the industry standard of 800 hours.
Self-Countersinking Screw Head. The Outlaw™ Deck Screws have special nibs on the underside of the screw head allowing the screw to “self-countersink” and not spin out thereby avoiding deck splinters.
Estimated Production Schedule.
Our Team: A Collection of Geniuses.
Well actually, there may be one of us who may be perilously close to being classified a genius, but we would surely never admit it to him. The truth is we're just a bunch of hard working guys trying to solve a few problems. We're comprised of an industrial designer (with no screwing experience), a mechanical engineer (with a lifetime of screwing experience), a contractor (whom we've worn out with screw testing), some business guys (absolutely no screwing experience), an operations guy (lot's of production and logistics experience) and a dog (who has been spayed, so no screwing experience). We've worked on this screw with sporadic intensity over the last two years and are hyper-focused on having it built and getting it into the hands of the masses.
Our Vision: Screwing Reinvented.
There has been no real innovation in fastener drive technology in over 80 years and none of the "mini-innovations" that have occurred solved any of the issues that existed before our introduction of the Outlaw Deck Screw. We humans have put men on the moon, introduced Twitter, Facebook and solar electric power, but our screws still strip and fall off of the many bits that we have to keep up with. Let's solve a simple problem, stop the pain and kick start the world's screwing performance. We're here to start a screwing revolution, join us.
Risks and challenges
Most every startup and Kickstarter project faces many of the same challenges and some of our key risks and challenges in getting the Screw Revolution started include:
ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING
A screw appears simple and historically defined, but our deck screws include many new innovative features and even though we have produced workable prototypes, we have not yet subjected our engineering to the rigors of the manufacturing process. We have tested and retested the prototypes and our manufacturing guidelines. Our punch designers, punch manufacturer and gauge (read: quality control testing devices) manufacturer are reportedly and believed by us to be the best in the world, but weird stuff happens when all of this talent collides with the reality of large production runs.
SUPPLY CHAIN AND LOGISTICS
So, you have to be able to have the cool thing made and then get it to the end user. How hard can that be? Well, not hard, but sometimes impossible. We have sourced, talked to and tested multiple suppliers and ways of handling the production, insuring the delivery and quality, but cannot be assured that other problems of production (ex. plant blows up) or shipment (ex.ship sinks) won't occur. These problems have existed before and others have solved them with historical precedent, we are students of their efforts, but we will encounter problems with the production and supply that will have to be solved for us to be successful.
In any business or with any project, the right people are the key and while we believe we have a great group of world class talent, we cannot guarantee that we can recruit or retain these type of individuals in the future.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
