Good moon Adelphians,
Today a small update to reveal a new concept from Michael Defroyennes, our Environment Art Director and talk a little about the flora in Adelpha (the Outcast planet).
Okaar (the forest region) features an enigmatic broken Daoka (portal) and quite a few architectural landmarks such as the bridge over the central lake, the citadel or the arena.
The convexity limitation of voxels back in the day allowed only a single shape for the trees, as can be seen in the screenshot below:
Foliage was created by using billboards (2d sprites) that would stay aligned with the camera. It was basically a hack, and was getting very pixellated when getting too close.
Listen to the wonderful music track from Okaar by Lennie Moore and immerse yourself in this world.
Now expect the forests of the reboot to be fully populated with a large and dense variety of plants and trees species (some interactive and collectible).
Here's a selection of concept sketches for the flora of Adelpha, some of which will be present in Okaar. Many of these have special purpose, such as healing, hurting, poison and more.
Expect to make your way through thick and dense foliage that move with the breeze, observe local fauna, encounter primitive tribes, solve puzzles and fight soldiers in the citadel, all that with beautiful dynamic lighting and shadows, that's going to be just amazing!
The new concept captures the mood of the original world and enriches both natural and architectural elements in a way that is respectful of the original yet allows a lot more creativity during production. Hope you like it.
