Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman is a Victorian gaslamp pulp adventure comic set in 1880s' London. Based on a fictional version of the life of Joseph Merrick, it steps between historical facts and turn of the century folklore juxtaposed with the American superhero comic conventions of super powers, masks, secret identities and fantastic adventures.
Thanks to the amazing Kickstarter community, we were able to create and release the first 4 issues story arc of Merrick. Then we finished a one-shot spin-off, Treves: A Restless Night. Now it's time to continue Joseph Merrick's story so we have returned to Kickstarter to hopefully fund the second arc, The Gambler's Cards, with issues #5 and #6.
Many years ago a businessman sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for luck and riches. As he became an old man his fear grew and he became obsessed with escaping his eternal fate. He used his vast fortune to commission his greatest achievement, a magical deck of cards which he still clutches in death.
Now Treves needs the cards to further his own schemes, only every agent he has sent to retrieve them has ended up as a patient in Bedlam Mental Asylum. Can The Elephantman succeed where others have failed? And can he survive his first encounter with Spring Heeled Jack?!
If you've encountered any of our physical issues of Merrick I'm sure you have noticed the print quality and the nice distinctive feel they have, it's something we feel really passionate about. This is the standard we will be sticking with as we move forward, all our single issues are printed on 120GSM uncoated bond with 300GSM matt laminated covers. We're striving to make every issue of Merrick something special, an item that you will want to keep, these are not disposable comics.
- Both issues are beautifully presented, full colour, standard US size comics. Issue #5 is 32 pages, Issue #6 approximately similar length.
- As with all single issues of Merrick, issue's #5 and #6 will be limited numbered runs of 500 never to be reprinted with the same cover.
- A maximum of 2 print runs for each issue.
- All single issues are shipped bagged and boarded to ensure they reach you looking as great as they went out.
- We'll also send you digital versions of each issue in .pdf and .cbr formats so you can enjoy issues of Merrick on the move on your tablet, smartphone or PC.
Although issue #1 of Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman is completely sold out, there is still a chance to build an impressive collection of single issues by picking up copies of the first run of #2 - #4. Limited edition, numbered to 500 copies with less than 80 copies of Merrick #2 left!
The Merrick Vol.1 Trade Paperback
Joseph Merrick is The Elephantman, the most remarkable human being ever to draw the breath of life! Cursed with hideous physical deformities which grant him enhanced strength and toughness, his skin as thick as his namesake.
Betrayed robbed and left for dead by his tour manager, Merrick drags himself back to London and once again finds himself in the care of Dr Frederick Treves, one of the most well respected surgeons in the country. But is the doctor all that he seems? And will the city's dark underbelly envelop him?
Treves: A Restless Night
Before he met The Elephantman, before he came to be one of the most talented surgeons at the London Hospital, a young Frederick Treves travelled throughout India with a fellow doctor. One night as they set camp in a barren wasteland Treves' travelling companion recounts the tale of a previous encounter with a local who put his faith in a witchdoctor over modern medicine...
Set before the events in Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman, A Restless Night is loosely based upon a true story taken from Treves' journals of his experience travelling through India. It recounts his first encounter with the unexplainable as he fights for his life against a vengeful curse.
There are around 200 copies left of the first print run of 500 which include a limited edition numbered bookplate signed by Tom and Luke. These will go to the earliest backers who pledge for a copy of this book.

"If Ward & Parker keep putting put books as strong as this, then they will deserve their growing reputation as one of the most exciting teams on the small press scene."
"Ward & Parker have nailed it and they’ve cemented themselves in the indie/small press scene as a creative team that can hit the heights consistently and by producing something that feels fresh and compelling. Give me more of this please….MORE, MORE, MORE!!!"
"Brutality and poetry co-exist simultaneously on the same page. It has that sad quality that David Lynch’s movie features, but tackles it in a completely different way. Merrick steps up to the hatred of the city, powerful instead of weak and infatuated. He rails against the injustice of the times and sets out like a pulp novel character cutting a swathe of bloody broken bones through the Hellboy level weirdness of the times."
"In a way, we all identify with the Elephant Man. How many of us truly enjoy seeing their own reflection? We all have doubts and insecurities about our own abilities and appearance, but what if someone were to come along and show you how to turn those things that you don't like about yourself into your greatest advantage? It's this inversion of the negative that I find empowering about this comic."
You May be Dead and Dreaming
"Tom Ward and Luke Parker have in four issues created a world richer and more interesting than many books can attain in years, if ever. Ward mixes the real, surreal and downright weird perfectly, without any visible seams. Parker’s art is reminiscent of Mike Mignola’s and he would fit in filling in on any of the Mignolaverse books easily. Parker’s coloring, particularly his use of oranges and blues gives this book its own visual identity. These guys are on their way to bigger things, so get in on the ground floor with Merrick, it is a truly unique read in today’s glut of boring superhero books."
Tom Ward: That's me, I'm the writer and creator of Merrick: The Sensational Elephantman. I'm still a regular guy who just wants to make comics but I've got a bit more experience under my belt now. I also co-created and wrote Doc Dino, and have been featured in The Grime, Comichaus and British Showcase (Markosia) Anthologies.
Luke Parker: Co-creator of Merrick, specialises in strong detailed line work using pen and ink, he mixes paper textures and digital colour to create graphically striking images. You may have seen more of Luke's work since in SEX #18 (Image comics), UNDERTOW #02 (Image comics), IMAGINARY DRUGS (IDW) and THE WINTERNATIONAL (Stela)
Nic J Shaw: Having studied Graphic Design at CATC in Sydney Nic has lettered for Image, Black Mask, IDW, and every issue of Merrick so far.
Clare Lenton: Clare is a freelance senior content designer, with a Masters degree in English Literature. Clare has has once again provided editing duties and has been an invaluable help on the whole series.
