About

Ourselves Black – Our Narratives, Our Images, Our Mental Health

Ourselves Black is an online and print magazine that explores black mental health, broadly defined. This is a place where we own the narrative and are unapologetic about our goal: to share imagery and tell stories infused with knowledge that promotes Black mental health.

Narratives matter. Positive self-image, family bonds, strong communities, and a sense of security are fundamental to mental health. For black people, each has been not merely undermined but at times outright attacked by the predominant narratives in place since this country’s inception.

The fight for mental health is real. And necessary.

Ourselves Black is a multi-media project including an online and print magazine, a podcast, and an innovative feature named Field Notes. Our goal is simple – to expand and inspire conversation around black mental health.

Why Black Mental Health Exploration Matters

All of us, whether we are in the suburbs or a jail cell, in therapy or taking our sorrows to Jesus, medicated with Prozac or smoking a blunt, are on a continuum from mental health to mental illness. The daily stressors unique to black people impact their place on this mental health - mental illness continuum and amplify the consequences of unaddressed psychological issues. This is about being able to use our gifts and realize our potential. This isn’t about diagnoses or labels. This is isn’t just about us as individuals. This is about our families and our communities and our collective selves.

Mental health issues cannot be a source of shame. They must be understood and ultimately addressed. Mental wellbeing cannot be taken for granted. It must be appreciated, protected, and nurtured.

A powerful counter-narrative about black humanity is essential. And is ours to tell.

Why Make a Print Magazine

We are HUGE fans and supporters of independent print magazines, and long ago realized it was difficult to find them focused on mental health, let alone black mental health. We wanted to create a beautiful, truthful, well written and informative medium of the highest quality that inspired readers to dig deep and engage in black mental health and wellness; many times mental health topics are heavy enough... so the aesthetics, design and print quality were key in creating a medium where the content was easily digestible.

We walked into countless coffee shops and micro print magazine shops always admiring the beautiful content, end product and amazing narratives, only they always illustrated and represented narratives and truths outside of "Ourselves".

Join the Ourselves Black Community

We are committed to creating a high-quality product. Hold our print, interact with our site, and this is evident. We believe that this project reflects not only black wellness, but also black excellence.

We need your help to keep this going.

This work requires contributions from professional writers and photographers and content editors. We insist on paying them a fair rate. There are also the costs of producing a coffee-table quality, beautiful offset print magazine.

Our goal of 30k will enable us to continue our podcast, social media engagement and online magazine and field Notes. With an additional 7k, another extraordinary print will be produced.

Risks and challenges

As with any innovative, independent endeavor, the market may say not now. That said, we’ve already invested a great deal, financially, professionally and personally into this project. Issues or content could be delayed if unforeseen contributor or manufacturing challenges pop up; however, we’ve assembled a good team and already have a great relationship with our printer.
