Ottomate and the Ottobox were invented by Ameer Sami, our Chief Engineer, when he was just 16. Like most kids, Ameer was constantly reminded by his Mom to turn off the lights, the TV and the computer. After years of being yelled at, or ‘reminded’, Ameer imagined having a gadget that could automatically turn things off for him. He then wondered if this same gadget could also turn things on right before he used them. Very quickly, he began dreaming up a super gadget that was so smart it didn’t even need to be programmed. It could simply learn his habits and automatically control his devices, lights, appliances, and anything that is plugged into an outlet.
Ameer took this concept and began developing what would soon be known as the Ottobox. He installed the Ottobox in his home and in the homes of his family members and they were pleasantly stunned by the power and the intelligence of the tiny device. When their energy bills arrived a month later they were even more surprised. Their electric bills had gone down by 50%!
In the year since then, Ameer has also created two more devices to join the Ottomate family - the Ottonovo and the Ottoplate. These devices work synchronously with each other to automate your home and give you full control of your home.
Now at 18 and having perfected the Ottobox, Ameer and the Ottomate team are ready to bring the Ottobox to the world with the help of Kickstarter!
We’ve been working on Ottomate products for 19 months now. The Ottobox that you see in the video is a working prototype.
With your support, we can bring the Ottobox into homes worldwide. While we’re close to entering production, your contribution will help fund:

Risks and challenges
Risks & Challenges
This isn’t our first Rodeo. Our team is experienced in launching technology ventures successfully. Still we face several key risks and challenges launching our home automation product. The primary risks for us include:
To achieve the level of simplicity in user experience that we have, we have to design and engineer a very complex system. We have taken key steps to ensure our engineering success. 1) We are building out our team with amazing engineers and designers, and 2) We test our Ottomate products with an obsession for perfection. In the last year, we have built 5 generations of prototypes, we have beta tested our prototypes for the last 19 months, and we keep enormous amounts of data to guide our future work.
SUPPLY CHAIN AND LOGISTICS
Many Kickstarter campaigns can encounter problems when taking their prototypes to production. This includes issues finding suppliers and engineering products for mass-production. Smooth execution is absolutely essential to overcoming such risks. We take this lesson seriously and have been working for months negotiating with suppliers, testing component quality, and building a team that can execute on our promises. Our plans are nearly in place, and we now mainly require the resources to execute them.
Finding the right people is a challenge for any endeavor. Success in home automation requires a team of talented, passionate, and motivated designers, engineers, and entrepreneurs. We have already formed a truly awesome (and fun!) team, but we will have to bring in more team members to realize this dream. In fact, we are actively looking for new members to join Ottomate and hit the ground running! Check out our website for more information.
