About this project
OTTOLOCK™ ● The Go-Anywhere Cinch Lock for Bikes & More
$352,425
Why don't many cyclists use locks? They are too heavy, too cumbersome, too bulky, and not designed for those who really want to ride their bikes.
OTTOLOCK is an all-new cinch lock for both cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts who value their gear and need a small, safe, and lightweight solution for their lifestyle. It's far more secure than a cable lock, and much lighter than a U-lock.
P.S. You can use it for a lot more than bikes!
OTTOLOCK solves your security problem with a patent-pending, multi-layer steel band design. It's simple and versatile, but surprisingly stronger than meets the eye!
In or around your saddle bag, in your pocket, or anywhere you want: OTTOLOCK is so lightweight you won't even know you are carrying it.
OTTOLOCK is extremely cut-resistant because of an engineered design that uses multiple layers of high-temper, 18mm-wide stainless steel bands coated in Santoprene® (a highly durable plastic) combined with a Kevlar® band. Under load, the bands slide upon one another and effectively reduce shear forces. Conventional theft tools like wire or bolt cutters are just not enough to cut the OTTOLOCK.
OTTOLOCK has applications beyond bicycles! Ski/Snow, Auto/Truck Cargo & Racks, Travel/Luggage/Gear, Tools, Camping, Motorcycles, Scooters, Surfboards, Canoe & Kayak. The possibilities with OTTOLOCK are limitless.
The 30" (76cm) OTTOLOCK weighs under 1/4lb (115g) and coils to under 3" (7.5cm) in diameter making it easy to pack and store in pockets, backpacks, purses, or jerseys (or on the bike). In comparison, U-locks or chain locks are 10-20x heavier than OTTOLOCK, and simply difficult to carry.
The cinching function also keeps your gear locked tight, and you can enclose up to 60" (150cm) in diameter. We've designed OTTOLOCK with three resettable combination wheels with detented action, custom locking pawls, and a durable aluminum head.
The OTTOLOCK will come in multiple colors, and be available in three lengths - starting with the all-around 30" (76cm) version, the super compact 18" (45cm) Pro Ride version, and the 60" (150cm) extended version (which is also long enough to lock multiple wheels to a post). You can also hook or 'daisy-chain' multiple OTTOLOCKs together.
We are offering various levels of rewards and product combinations for pledges starting at $50USD for a single cinch lock. The OTTOLOCK is both designed and manufactured in the USA.
The 18” Pro Ride version is intended for cyclists on-the-go; offering the shortest coil time, the lightest weight, the most bike storage options, and just enough length to cinch your bike to any post or pole up to 5” (12.5cm) in diameter. When used together with the OTTOMOUNT™ (included with Pro Ride version), the OTTOLOCK is secure and accessible so you can cinch down your bike in seconds!
OTTOMOUNT is a great accessory for on-the-bike carry of OTTOLOCK, designed with many positions in mind. You'll love its utility and won't even know it's there!
The concept was seeded by professional cyclist, Jacob Rathe (Jelly Belly presented by Maxxis), who has experienced theft problems while stopping for coffee or snacks on training rides. This patent-pending product has been in development by our OTTO DesignWorks team for over one year, with hard-tooled mass production delivery scheduled for early 2017. Our product testers love the go-anywhere cinch lock because you can always take it with you, and stop anywhere with peace of mind. There is simply no excuse not to carry a lock now!

Back Us Now!
The design is done, the testing is done, the production plan is done, and we'd love your help to take the Go-Anywhere Cinch Lock to the next level. Our team is excited to provide you with a new security choice and deliver your OTTOLOCK soon. Thanks for your support!
Risks and challenges
We've been developing the product design and production processes for over one year, including new methods for band extrusion, end forming and tooth formation specific to OTTOLOCK. We've tested beta samples rigorously in internal cut, pull and smash tests. We are seeking Kickstarter funding to offset the costs of pre-production units as well as gain market feedback on the many uses for OTTOLOCK prior to full scale hard-tooling production.
We are confident in our manufacturing processes but some work is required to refine for volume production. We've added several weeks to our schedule to ensure smooth deliveries and consistent quality in large quantity runs. Production assembly capacity may temporarily limited while we ramp to handle the expected large volumes.

It is important to note that all locks can be defeated with proper tools, technique and time. We have not designed OTTOLOCK for overnight or long duration security in high theft urban areas.
We have tested OTTOLOCK in both manual and fixtured test protocols. This includes:
• Band cut testing - bolt cutters, wire cutters, single pivot and compound shears
• Band torsion testing
• Head pawl pick testing
• Head impact testing
• Assembly tensile pull force testingOTTOLOCK has gone through five head design iterations, and approximately 20 band iterations from these tests. The tensile force to pull OTTOLOCK apart exceeds 500lbs and will increase significantly in final production. The lock head was changed from plastic to aluminum from our impact tests. The band has moved to five layers with Kevlar® to address being cut with shears and torsion failure.
You can cut through the OTTOLOCK bands with a powered angle grinder or hacksaw in several minutes.
Note: For maximum security, we strongly recommend you cinch your OTTOLOCK as tight as possible when in use. This will reduce the necessary leverage and access space the majority of tools require and will make theft attempts much more difficult.

For all US backers, we’ll likely ship First Class Mail via USPS.
For international backers, we are reviewing options between UPS and USPS. Due to variations in how international shipments are handled by the destination country, there are certain instances in which international backers may experience a delay of several days to several weeks once the package has arrived in its country of destination. This is likely due to a slight holdup in the customs process, and once this process has taken its course your reward will arrive.
Our quoted international shipping is in line with best carrier options and frankly we are absorbing cost in many countries. We apologize for this irritant, and expect OTTOLOCK costs will be much better in 2017 with International distribution in place.
-
Rest assured, we'll be send out a 'survey' for each pledge reward level to each backer and you'll have a chance to select colors, and also confirm shipping details.

Your card will not be charged until the project has come to an end on October 12, 2016, with 100% or more funding.

We've listed February 2017 as the delivery time frame. Due to the overwhelming early success of the campaign, we expect to approve final hard tooling funding earlier than our original sign-off date of October 15, 2016 which will give us head start on volume production. Expect backer updates on our major production milestones in the future.

OTTOLOCK units will be assembled in Portland, Oregon USA. We have several local suppliers making components and another key strategic supplier in the Midwest USA.

Yes! You will be able to change from the factory setting to combo of your choice (with a paper clip and technique). This is really handy if you have multiple OTTOLOCKs and need to remember easily.
-
Yes, we have a product road map with includes an even higher security band version with 4-combo head for broader applications. A 3-combo head is more than adequate security given the initial design intent and application. A key version is to be determined based on market demand, as our focus groups have generally steered us away from this due to the hassle of remembering or losing a key.
