"Oddly Normal", an all-ages fantasy graphic novel.
UPDATE (Jan 12th, 2012): The unlockable rewards have been UNLOCKED! Everyone who pledged $25 or or (or pledges $25 or more from this point on) will get a printed copy of the final book with a special alternate cover!
"Oddly Normal" is a coming of age story about a 10-year old girl with the most unfortunate name and the luck to go with it. Her green hair and pointed ears have earned this half-witch mocking derision from other kids. On her 10th birthday, Oddly's parents mysteriously disappear and she is left in the care of her great Aunt, a citizen of a fantastical place called Fignation. Unfortunately for Oddly, her experiences there will not be any better than they were on Earth.
Hi! My name is Otis Frampton. For 8 years now, I've been a professional comic book writer and artist as well as working as a freelance illustrator. I've worked on many projects as well as creating hundreds of private commissions for clients all over the world. But my graphic novel series "Oddly Normal" has always been the project that I most wanted to get back to. Now, with your help, I hope to bring "Oddly Normal" back better than ever.
"Oddly Normal" began as a webcomic in 2004 and was then published by
Viper Comics as a four issue mini-series and then collected into a
single volume which was named one of the "Top 10 Graphic Novels For
Youth" by the American Library Association in 2006. I wrote and drew the
first book, but due to various factors I chose to bring on another
artist for the second book, while I wrote and colored it. A third book
was drawn by yet another artist, but due to financial problems that my
publisher was experiencing, the third entry in the series never saw
print and "Oddly Normal" fell off of my radar as I began to build a
career as a working artist.
Now, after years of building that career, I'm finally ready to bring Oddly back to life. But I don't just plan on continuing the series, I intend to start from scratch and re-create the first book as I originally intended it to be…a 150-200 page graphic novel, as opposed to the 4 issue mini series published by Viper Comics that was limited to 25 pages each. This will be "Oddly Normal 2.0", with a more expanded story and drawn using the skills I have developed over the last 8 years. The new book will be better drawn, explore the characters more and feature expanded action scenes. This will be "Oddly Normal" as I envisioned it in 2003 when I started it as a webcomic, not the book that was hindered by the restricting realities of the monthly comic book business.
I intend to attempt to sell the completed book to a publisher as opposed to self-publishing it (although I will self-publish if it comes to that). Therefore your donation will NOT pay for the printing of the final graphic novel. I've outlined my plan for Kickstarter funding below. Your donations will:
• Cover expenses so that I can take 5-6 months to finish the new book.
• Pay for printing and shipping of various rewards offered to backers.
• Pay for printing of promotional copies of the finished book to attract interest from publishers.
As a backer, you will receive regular updates and sneak peeks at the work in progress. Each and every backer will be thanked in a special section in the back of the book when it is published as well as on my website. All of the rewards that are printed (sketchbooks, prints, artwork, etc) will be signed by me (and personalized upon request).
"Oddly Normal" is the project that is closest to my heart. Oddly herself is the character that I feel closest to among all of my creations and I feel like I have a responsibility to continue her story in the best way possible. Not only will you be helping me to finally bring "Oddly Normal" to life as I always wanted to, but you'll also be helping me pave the way for more "Oddly" books in the future.
I have a completed synopsis for the new book and I am in the process of scripting the new and expanded scenes. I will begin production sometime in February of 2012. I will be drawing and coloring pages live on my Ustream webcast ( http://www.ustream.tv/channel/otis-frampton-live ) as well as posting regular updates here and on brand new "Oddly Normal" website about progress on the book: http://oddlynormalcomic.com/

For the commissions offered as campaign rewards, will they have full scenes/backgrounds or are you only doing abstract backgrounds?
The commissions can be full scenes with backgrounds or not, depending on the piece. I'll treat every Kickstarter commission reward just like a normal commission and deal with each one with the client to give them what they want.
