About this project
Otaak Band - Live in Chicago
You made it possible for Otaak Band to produce our first album, Bejawiya, back in 2011. Because of this recording, we have been invited to give a performance and master class in Chicago at the Old Town School of Folk Music on January 15th, 2014. We want to share the recording of this concert and will give it away as a free Mp3 digital download on our website. We know that you, our fans, have been anxious to see and hear Otaak Band in the States, and we're reaching out to you again to make it happen.
This Kickstarter campaign is for the minimum funding required to produce this live recording, but if we if can surpass our goal we will be able to bring you so much more.
PLEASE NOTE: If you do not wish to donate through this website, we can provide you with an address to send a check, or you may also donate through Paypal at www.otaakband.com
Phase 1: Basic Funding Requirements
Ahmed Said Abuamna,
our wonderful singer from Eastern Sudan, needs to submit a visa application with US Immigration and get a plane ticket to come to the States. The expenses related to that are:
-- Visa Application- $1600
We will be submitting Ahmed's application through Tamizdat, a New York firm that specializes in visas for artists and musicians. They have helped thousands of artists enter the US to perform.
-- Plane ticket- $1600; From Khartoum, Sudan, to Indianapolis, Indiana- $1600
-- Checked baggage- $200; Ahmed will be bringing several instruments and other props for the live shows
-- Gas from Bloomington, IN to Chicago- $100
-- Food and accommodations- 6 band members for two days- $700
-- Recording, mixing, and mastering the concert- $800
Phase 2: The Extras
If we can reach the following benchmarks, we'll be able to deliver the complete Otaak Band Live in Chicago experience to you:
-- $7000 will allow us to film and edit our concert at the Old Town School and release it to you digitally
-- $8500 will allow us to make a physical DVD. Special features will include the complete master class on Beja music and culture, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of our time in Chicago.
-- $10000 and above will let us schedule more tour dates, and even bring over Ahmed's group of four Beja dancers from the Sudan with whom we can make the most exciting Otaak Band shows!!
Please visit www.otaakband.com for more information. We're so excited to have this opportunity to perform in the United States, and we hope to have you there with us every step of the way. See you in Chicago!!

Risks and challenges
For a Sudanese national entering the United States there can be many complications. Even with our official invitation letters and a complete and thorough case from the specialists in New York, there is a very real possibility that the visa application will be denied. He could even get the visa, and then be turned away by customs officials at his port of entry.
We will invoke the power of positive thinking so that he slides right in the door and straight to the gig.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
