Lets face it, if the internet is any indicator, cats have already conquered planet Earth. The time has come for the feline adventure duo, Oskar & Klaus, to boldly go where no cat has gone before!
Since 2011, the real-life Oskar has shown millions of fans online that a blind cat can have a tremendous capacity for well-being, and a high quality of life. As far as Oskar's happiness is concerned, THE SKY IS THE LIMIT! That is... until now!
Following the success of Oskar's first illustrated adventure, Oskar & Klaus: The Search for Bigfoot, we are ready for an even bigger escapade!
If there's one message that is crystal clear throughout this book, it is that despite Oskar's blindness, he is more than equipped with the necessary skills to carry out a successful mission in outer space. Readers will learn that there are endless ways to engage with a blind friend in meaningful and fun ways. Furthermore, we hope that young readers who may be visually impaired will be motivated by this positive portrayal of the confident individual that Oskar truly is.
In Oskar & Klaus: The Mission to Cataria, the always-primed-for-adventure Oskar persuades his shiftless sidekick, Klaus, to join him on an unforgettable voyage 150,000 miles away from home! The story begins with a rare cosmic event: the passing of a mysterious planetoid close to the Earth’s orbit. Oskar & Klaus answer a televised call for astronauts of diminutive stature to travel to the object via downscaled rocket ship.
With the guidance of scientists at a NASA branch called Cosmic Adventure Technologies, and under the direction of the alien-obsessed Agent Alan Probos, the heroes are transformed from common mousers into genuine astrocats.
As the mission gets underway, things don’t necessarily go according to plan, and it will be up to Oskar & Klaus, and their robotic assistant Y.U.R.I., to keep a cool head and make the right decisions to safely return to Earth. Will they reach the perplexing planetoid called Cataria? Will their friendship last under pressure? Will they ever make it back home in time for supper? You will just have to read the book!
While written clearly in a rhyming children's book format, this captivating adventure story is truly made for ALL AGES to enjoy! You will find yourself laughing right along with young readers, and moved by poignant moments that tell a story that is accessible to all. The gripping artwork alone will immerse anyone in the thrill of the exploits Much like in the works of Dr. Seuss, or animated films like Shrek, adults will find plenty of amusement in this timeless tale. They may even pick up on a few pop culture and sci-fi references, although these in no way detract from the plot.
We have once again teamed up with the tremendously-talented Russian illustrator, Alex Novoseltsev. By pledging to support this project, you are making it possible for us to pay this gifted artist to complete the extremely high quality and detailed artwork that requires a lot of time and energy. The work that we have finalized so far is a stunning compliment to this captivating story, and is a charming representation of the adventurous nature of Oskar & Klaus. For reference, as of August 5th, 75% of the art is completed.
Additionally, your support will make it possible for us to print and ship the books. The book will be 11 x 8.5 inches (about 28 x 21.5 centimeters), hardcover, and 40 pages with full color illustrations printed on durable paper stock. This will be be a very high quality and sturdy picture book with narrative and images that are meant to be understood and enjoyed by all ages for years to come. While the story is already finished, we are still refining and tweaking the text to maximize the breadth of the adventure. To sample the style and quality of our writing, please refer to our first book of the series, Oskar & Klaus: The Search for Bigfoot. You can get a preview by clicking here.
The book will be printed in the USA by a small, independent, environmentaly-friendly company. We don't think that printing overseas in order to maximize profits is the the right thing to do when the environment pays the price.
Age Range: 4 to 10 years. Grade Range: Preschool to Grade 5.
MORE ABOUT THE REAL OSKAR & KLAUS:
OSKAR was born on May 5th, 2011, and was adopted by Mick & Bethany Szydlowski on July 11th of that year. He was an outdoor cat living on a small farm in the Loess Hills of western Iowa. Oskar's condition is a severe form of micropthalmia, which simply means that his eyes never fully developed due to certain genetic factors. Despite missing his sense of sight, Oskar is a very healthy and very happy cat. He functions perfectly well in his home using his other senses, and many visitors don't even realize that he's fully blind!
Oskar's sidekick and best friend is KLAUS. He is a very sweet former stray, and was adopted as an adult in December of 2006 from The Cat House in Lincoln, Nebraska. We suspect that he was four or five years old at the time of his adoption. His right ear lays flat due to possible damage from excessive scratching caused by ear mites, or perhaps a nasty fight. Klaus also has other scars on his body, including a massive one on his back, as well as a few missing teeth. Life on the street is tough on a kitty, but he's spoiled rotten now!
Even MORE about Oskar & Klaus:
Like Oskar & Klaus, the authors, Mick & Travis, are good pals who have embarked on many adventures of their own over the course of their 15 year friendship. Whether it's playing in bands, skateboarding, selling instruments at a music store or simply getting lost on a long hike, they've been able to collaborate on all kinds of creative endeavors.
MICK SZYDLOWSKI lives in Seattle, Washington with his wife, Bethany, daughter Faye, and their two cats, Oskar & Klaus. Mick has a passion for photography, outdoor exploration and wildlife conservation. He is also a musician, playing guitar, bass and keyboards (Oskar & Klaus love to rock out!). He and Bethany are strong advocates for special needs pet adoption and are thrilled to hear when people are encouraged to adopt a special needs pet as a result of experiencing Oskar's story.
TRAVIS BOSSARD lives in Lincoln, Nebraska with his wife, Annie, and their trusty dog, Ñoquis. Travis is a musician who plays several instruments, including guitar, piano, accordion, mandolin & autoharp. In fact, it was the purchase of this old used autoharp that led his friends Mick & Bethany to find and adopt Oskar from a farm outside of Omaha, Nebraska in the summer of 2011! Travis enjoys spending time with Oskar & Klaus in spite of a severe allergy to cats (THANK YOU, ZYRTEC!)
ALEX NOVOSELTSEV is from Samara, Russia! In the past, he has worked in web, graphic and logo design. Now, he works as a caricature artist and illustrator. His immense talents have made him an indispensable collaborator on this project. He doesn't have any pets at the moment, but would love to get a dog soon! His hobbies include photography, reading, and doing art projects in bot digital and traditional media.
Risks and challenges
We've been working very hard to ensure that this book delivers the utmost in quality and significance. Our current production process for the artwork has yielded amazing results, but it takes time. Fortunately, we're already 3/4 of the way through at the time of this Kickstarter launch and fine tuning each page daily. The printing process will also take several weeks, but we are confident that the November estimated delivery goal is very attainable. If any unforeseeable delays emerge, you can rest assured that we will communicate with all of our backers and work very hard to get the book and other rewards delivered as soon as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
