About this project
ornana was just named by filmmaker magazine as one of the "25 new faces of independent film": http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/news/people/ornana
two films that will bring you new stories in new ways:
"CONFUSION THROUGH SAND," the follow-up animation to "(notes on) biology," explores the spectrum of haze experienced by today's soldiers in the desert. it's an interpretation of what happens when top training encounters circumstances beyond the realm of human control, in both interior and exterior conflicts. the story is on the ground and under the helmet of a 19 year-old infantryman.
it'll look like this:
this project will be animated using markers in a rotoscope-like process, with all background and foreground elements drawn onto sheets of recycled paper. naturally, turning out thousands of frames like this will take some time to complete.
euphonia, the first feature film by ornana, maps the effects of what we hear on what we feel, following a romance while taking a close look at the risks of turning to technology to replace the unpleasant with the desired. it captures a suburban portrait of realizing how important it is to stop and listen, as well as the destructive potential of checking out of your surroundings.
the story of ornana:
once upon a time, ornana films was started by a band of high school kids. they made a bunch of short films—some animated, some not—and pretty soon those films were getting attention, even outside the neighborhood.
since then, others have joined the operation. some brought in from such remote locations as california and new york city. guys and girls with different skill-sets but a common sense of dedication to making movies better.
the latest ornana release, "(notes on) biology," was nominated alongside productions from Pixar and Disney for the 2012 short subject Annie Award and received the Jury Prize for short animation at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival.
this is how your backing will support these projects:
euphonia has been filmed and edited, but there are still lots of post-production responsibilities to take care of. studio sound mix and color correction being the main expenses right now. we'll be doing all that in marin county, california. then we've got to get it out there: costs for festival submissions and the materials necessary.
for "CONFUSION THROUGH SAND," we are shooting live-action, reference footage which has practical expenses of its own—camera stuff, costumes, transportation, lighting, feeding the crew, et cetera. then comes the animating. we'll need to pay for supplies as well as the dedication of time that it takes to draw all these things. after that, we'll do the photography, for which we'll build rigs to specifically light different shots. then it's post-production—editing, studio sound design/mix, color correction. finally we do all that festival stuff, again.
with a bit of support from you guys, ornana will be able to keep pushing its abilities to bring you better movies of all kinds, ones that go beyond the boundaries of conventional film and animation.
thank you for reading, and enjoy the movies.
