As seen in:
Our idea is to produce made-to-order jeans that are hand-crafted from selvedge denim at an affordable price. Right now on Kickstarter we want to kick start (of course) our idea, and in the long run we want to reinvent the industry.
Selvedge denim is a beautiful thing – it’s real, it’s authentic and it’s original. And we want to make it more available to everyone who appreciates quality and timeless fashion in the same garment.
Most folks cannot afford made-to-order clothing. OriJeans is going to change that with a new web constructor which will allow folks who really love selvedge denim jeans to customize the cut and fabric, then personalize the details. The finished product will be your “dream jeans”.
How will we get the fit and details right? First, you’ll customize your jeans by choosing from a variety of cuts and fabrics. Then, you’ll personalize them by adding various design elements such as scuffs, rips, and maybe even spikes. Finally, you’ll enter your personal measurements into our innovative web constructor.
Our women cut:
If you know what selvedge denim is you’re definitely in the right place - we’re not using any old denim…but rather the best authentic raw selvedge denim fabric from the most reputable American and Japanese mills.
We'll be using only raw and sanforized denim to make OriJeans truly authentic.
The term selvedge probably comes from “self-edge” – a weaving process which produces a tight, finished edge on the fabric. Selvage denim has come to be associated with premium quality jeans, which show the finished edges from the loom rather than the overlocked edges that are shown on jeans from lesser fabrics.
If you like to wear cuffs, you’ll see these cool little color stripes where the denim ends – that’s the distinctive mark of selvedge denim. Selvedge denim has a distinctive look and feel with a depth and dimension that is completely unique. You won’t be mistaking your quality selvedge jeans for something bought at Wal-Mart!
We will produce our jeans in Ukraine. Why there? Well, we have some family connections there and we’ve located a suitable production facility and experienced seamstresses. The country is still recovering from a Communist past, but one thing that survives is pride in craftsmanship.
Our guarantee: we are sure that our jeans will fit you perfectly and look exactly as you designed them. If not, we are ready to resew them for you free of charge. This is how confident we are about quality of OriJeans.
We’re not building web sites, don’t worry. Web constructor is what we call our new user-friendly Internet platform which you’ll visit to order your pair of OriJeans – all from the comfort of your home.
Here’s how it works. Our web constructor will give you a plenty of options for customisation. First, you select either male or female model you'll customise, then you pick a cut. In the beginning we'll have 4 male and 4 female cuts available. Then you choose a fabrics, selection of 6 different fabrics will be available at launch of the project. Having chosen these elements, you can start designing your jeans, applying scuffs, rips; lightening some part of the jeans. You can also choose from a number of fly and pocket options. The changes will be appearing on the model as they are made, so you always know what you are doing. Once you've designed the jeans, you simply press the button and follow up with check out. You can switch back and forth as much as you want and change your mind a hundred times – the virtual model will keep up!
Here are a couple of sketches of our web constructor (it'll be ready in late January):
For Kickstarter we are offering four basic men's cuts (women cuts will be added soon):
Next, you customize by adding scuffs, rips, and you can lighten parts of your jeans. The virtual model will keep up and display your work. You can even choose the right pocket style, buttons or zip options of a fly, and pick the thread color to make your new jeans look perfect.
Finally, you’ll enter you measurements into the web constructor and we’ll hand-craft your jeans!
Hmm…$99 for made-to-order selvedge denim jeans…how is this possible?
First, we’re not selling through retail outlets. That alone cuts out quite a bit of fat. We’re skipping the middleman and interacting directly with our customers using the power of the Internet. We’re only 1 click away! You’ll essentially be buying wholesale without any reduction in quality. Once we have your order, our team of professional seamstresses will produce your jeans to your specifications and we’ll deliver them to your door.
Second, producing in Ukraine (right next to Poland) keeps things affordable. We’re not there to exploit anybody…on the contrary, we have family connections there and we’re proud to bring much-needed jobs to a developing area which really needs them. We’ll be paying above-market wages and our facility is newly renovated and up to code.
Also, we’re not out-sourcing the production – we have full direct control of the manufacturing process!
You’ll receive an OriJeans “Kickstarter backers code” which will allow you to access our web constructor. Also you can back our project and use your reward as a gift!
Finally, thanks in advance for being a backer! If you like what we’re doing please share our project with your friends!

Risks and challenges
Risks include production delays based on late-arriving materials from the selvedge denim mills and the outbound logistics (getting the rewards to you). Our plan is to have back-up suppliers, where possible, and to make sure we order on time. However, we've spent the last 11 months researching the best suppliers and we’ve carefully worked out a timeline which will allow us to deliver the rewards on time. We’ve also built in an extra 20% buffer in terms of scheduling…just in case!
Challenges include getting the web constructor just right. We have a great working relationship with an experienced web designer who understands exactly what we need, and although we’ve done lots and lots of communicating and planning and refining the web constructor concept, we’ll inevitably face something unexpected once we go live!
Finally, while OriJeans is a work in progress, our team is totally committed to making OriJeans the best it can be. We believe in transparency, full disclosure and frequent communication - so our backers will be the first to know about not only our successes…but our problems, as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
