At ORD Solutions, we already manufacture a high quality, single nozzle 3D Printer. We have many happy customers in the industrial, commercial, and hobby communities. But we want more!
What we want to do is provide a 3D Printer with as many as FIVE (5) extrusion nozzles. That's right, FIVE! That means you could print an object with five different colors throughout the object without stopping to switch the filament. Or you could use three of the five nozzles for different colors, one larger nozzle for faster infilling, and one for a different support material. It's up to you!
That is what we are offering in this Kickstarter. The chance to support the development of a better 3D printer. We won't stop with just more nozzles though. We'll improve the whole 3D Printer! We'll move the extruder off the carriage to reduce weight and increase speed. We'll make the Y carriage lighter, stronger, and flatter. We'll upgrade the hotend to be all metal so it can print at any temperature, even very high (>350C), so you could print in any 3D filament material like polycarbonate or ABS or PLA or Vinyl or even plastics that have yet to be invented, future proofing your investment! We'll increase the build volume - our goal is 11.1"(X) by 10.65"(Y) by 6.5" (Z). This will give our printer the largest build volume of 3D Printers in its price class. But the best part is the footprint will still stay the same. You'll still be able to fit the printer on your desk or 2D printer stand! We'll also upgrade the extruder with a quick release latch to make changes to the filament and adjusting the spring tension a 10 second process. This printer will have a heated bed platform that can reach printing temperatures in <1 min. Beginning the print will only take as long as a standard 2D printer now.
On top of the new features being introduced with this project, your printer will also have all of the features of our existing printers, including the fact that your printer is fully assembled and ready to print right out of the box. Our printer has a very short learning curve, as we bundle all the software you will need with the printer, along with simple instructions for using it. Our printer is made of extremely sturdy, high quality components, which means it won't breakdown or wear out even if you are constantly using it. And, in the unlikely event that your printer has a manufacturing defect, or if you should decide to upgrade your printer down the road, we will be here to support you. Every printer we sell is tracked in our ERP software, meaning when you contact us we can call up the details of your exact printer, including any customizations, and provide you with parts and support immediately.
So how can you get one of these great printers? Below is the cost matrix. Use this to figure out how much you should pledge to get the printer setup you want, shipped to where you want. All printers include one (1) 1kg spool of the filament of your choice per nozzle, so if you get the three nozzle printer, you will get three spools of filament. (The prices below include sales tax for Canadian customers).
If you want to customize your nozzles, for example, to make one nozzle bigger for faster infilling, you will specify that at the end of the campaign in the survey we will send you. There is no difference in the pledge value. The end-of-campaign survey is also where you will specify the type and color of filament you want included with your printer.
Here is a comparison of the 5 color version of our printer to our main competitors. You can see that our build volume is larger, the resolution is better, the number of printable filament types is greater, our cost is lower, and we can print more colors and material types at a time.
You may be wondering why our price is so much lower than our next nearest competitor. The main reason is that we don't have any middle men taking a cut. As well, we do expect the price to increase after the KickStarter once we get some distribution, so now is a very good time to get this great price. Also, while we could price it higher, based on the competition, we want to give our KickStarter supporters the best price ever for this printer. We don't want people who buy it later to pay less than the KickStarter supporters do.

Risks and challenges
We are an existing Canadian 3D Printer manufacturer. We manufacture and assemble in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. We make our printers out of as much Canadian material as possible! We can fulfill on this project because we've done it before. We have the expertise. We have the supplier relationships. We know what the shipping times are. We even have custom ERP software that streamlines the whole manufacturing process for us. From creating sales orders, to purchasing raw materials, to on-time order fulfillment. Our team is experienced in manufacturing and business. It's good to have creative ideas - but being able to fulfill on them is Great!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Nozzles will be available in .35mm and .7mm. We expect that you will have at most one .7mm nozzle that will be used for infilling. But we'll build it however you want.
We will only be supporting 1.75mm diameter filament. This filament has 2 times the resolution as 3mm diameter filament, and is the exact same price. We sell both sizes, as there are a lot of legacy printers in the market that use 3mm, but we think 1.75mm is superior.
The following Open Source software is included with your printer, and has been tested and is certified to work with your printer: Google Sketchup and oOpenScad for 3D Design. Slic3r for creating the tool path. Pronterface for printing.
No. While we control the price of the printer, the price of the filament is subject to market forces, so in a year, filament might cost a lot more (but we hope not). It might also be cheaper. On the webstore, the printer does not come with filament, so the $100 coupon won't entitle you to filament either. Just the printer at the Kickstarter price.
We always envisioned that the printer would be upgradeable to up to 5 nozzles from any of the lower configurations. However, that was before we added the water cooling. The cooling unit will be the same no matter how many nozzles you have, but each nozzle requires a cooling block that will now be considered an extra part, and will require you to install it if you buy it after the fact. If you are a handy person then you won't have a problem.
We have not set pricing on a standalone extruder, hot end, and cooling block. We are committed to the Kickstarter pricing, but the design has changed over the course of our campaign, and the price of an entire printer is going up once the Kickstarter ends. So as long as you are prepared to pay more, later, for the extra pieces than you would have paid had you bought them all now, then go ahead and pledge for a printer with fewer nozzles.
