WHAT WE WANT TO DO
We want to make a trailer/short film for a feature film idea called "OrdinaryMan." The story follows a fallen superhero named Will (played by Grant Garry) who has recently run out of powers. Now he is unemployed and sleeping on his girlfriend's (Sadie Katz) couch. With the help of her son (Danny Pardini), Will begins a journey to find a new identity and to become an ordinary man.
The film is influenced by the 70s and 80s work of director Steven Spielberg, early work of Tim Burton and Frank Capra. We hope to continue their tradition of filmmaking with OrdinaryMan.
The ultimate goal with the project is to enter it into the Sundance Film Festival as well as numerous other film festivals across the country over the next year.
HOW WE WILL DO IT
We will be shooting the project on 35mm Kodak film and be using Panavision's 35mm camera package. We will be shooting in our hometown of Fresno, CA from June 26th-July 1.
We will be working with cinematographer John Honore, who Peter has worked with on 6 films. He is a true professional and the final product will look nothing short of amazing.
Here is a reel of previous work, much of which includes John as cinematographer.
Additionally, Grant and Peter have been making movies together since they were in grade school. They share both a love for movies and a chemistry that will translate on screen in the final movie.
HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED
- Required insurance policy on the production for lighting equipment, camera rentals and overall production protection.
- 35mm Kodak film stock; processing and post-production costs.
- Travel, hotel and other expenses for crew, actors and getting equipment to Fresno (truck).
- Food for cast and crew.
- Production and costume design.
HOW FAR ALONG ARE WE?
So far, the project is ready to go except for funding. We have cast each part, gathered crew and found most of our filming locations.
All we will need to do is raise the money required and we will be able to make the movie! We are so grateful for whatever contributions that can be made.
PETER PARDINI (writer/director/producer)
Born in Fresno, CA, Peter has been making movies since he was in kindergarten. He made his first feature by the time he was a Junior in high school and he eventually landed at Cal State Northridge's screenwriting department. Graduating at the top of his class, he was also the only undergraduate selected for their 2010 annual screenwriting competition for his short film "The Benders."
In addition, he has made several short films, three features, and 4 feature documentaries. Since graduating he has directed music videos, commercials, and he has toured with legendary rock band Chicago, filming their 2011 World Tour. He completed a feature documentary "Frontier" that was released in over 500 theaters nationwide in 2011.
Overall, Peter's goal is to make movies for the masses while maintaining a level of artistic integrity.
GRANT GARRY (actor)
Ever since an early age, Grant has had the bug for acting and making movies. A double threat, he spent his early years both in front of and behind the camera, acting in and producing his first feature before he graduated high school. He attended Loyola Marymount University with a major in Theater, starring in several of the school's productions.
Recently, he has seen success with work on such shows as General Hospital, NCIS Los Angeles and the ABC sitcom Man Up. He has also recently worked with Peter, acting in Chicago's music video "Yule Tide Good Samaritan" alongside actor Kyle Mooney and Joe Mantegna. He is currently hosting his own podcast on itunes called "Popular Belief."
Overall, he wants to continue working both sides of the camera as well as delving into many other areas of the entertainment world.
JOHN HONORE (director of photography)
Since graduating from Chapman University with an MFA in cinematography, John has shot over 50 short films and 6 feature films. While at Chapman, he shot a number of films, including Free Lunch, Nomad and Lunch, which were especially well-received.
He recently finished filming Chicago's music video with Peter and Grant and is about to go to work on a feature film, on location in Honolulu, HI.
Overall, John's goal is in tune with Peter and Grant's to make intelligent, thought provoking films that also appeal to a large audience.
THE LEAD ACTORS
Alongside Grant Garry (playing the role of Will) will be Sadie Katz and Danny Pardini.
Peter and Sadie worked together on another 35mm project in 2009 entitled "Crooks." (now titled Bad Reputation per the reel on the page) She is an experienced actress who will be playing Will's (Grant Garry) working-mom girlfriend. She has exceptional acting ability and we are so pleased to have her aboard.
Danny is Peter's younger cousin and he appeared in a short film Peter made in college, titled "The Legend of Caetano McGee." He has an incredible personality and is the perfect choice to play Sadie's son and Grant's annoyed housemate Danny.
We believe this is a story that will be enjoyable by audiences of all ages and backgrounds. It's definitely a view on the super hero genre that you've never seen before, but the draw for our team doesn't begin and end with this twist on conventions. We see this as an opportunity to advance the importance of storytelling in modern cinema while simultaneously tipping our hats to the ones who came before us (Spielberg, Frank Capra, etc.)
We want to push ourselves in a direction of asking ourselves why we are doing this and not what we are doing this for. Certainly, there is a lot of success to be had in this industry. But we truly believe and understand that success doesn't sustain itself unless you are doing what you do for the right reasons.
And we love doing what we do. So much so that there is nothing else to think of that would be a sufficient back up "Plan B."
As a team, we have worked together many times before and there is an unspoken bond that occurs on set because of this. But more than that, we are all friends with the same goal of creating something lasting and impressionable. And we want you to be a part of it.
The foundation is the most important aspect of any project and we believe 100% that the foundation is strong.
The essence of moviemaking and watching movies is the mutual experience shared by the audience and those who made it. We hope you will join us on this journey and any and all contributions of either good will or kickstarter donations are greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much,
Peter Pardini, Grant Garry, John Honore and the rest of the OrdinaryMan team.
