We make a good team.
I’ve always been a writer. And Pete has always had melodies making their way to his fingertips. But it took us a while to realize it’s what we’re here to do.
When we met nine years ago at an open mic, we were both pursuing non-music careers. Both having chosen paths based on research and experience, and a whole lot of what other people thought and told us we should do. That seems to be the way of things. So when your career chooses you, it takes a bit to screw your eyes up just right to see it.
But here we are. Crystal and Pete Damore--married couple, full-time musicians, living on the road for the last four years, with four dogs. A scenario that would have sounded impossible to our 2009 selves. But now it feels impossible to do anything else. Writing and sharing our music gives us a voice we didn’t realize we had, and it gives us a way of communicating and connecting with people that is difficult to accomplish any other way.
It’s been quite a ride since our last album “Before I Go” was released. We’ve been overwhelmed by your love on all kinds of stages. From living room corners at small, intimate house concerts, to the main stage at the Kerrville Folk Festival, to the Folly Theatre in Kansas City, where we were named Artist of the Year at the International Folk Music Awards.
We make a good team.
And that’s why we’re here inviting you to get in on the ground level of our next album. It’s hard to know the right things to do in what is a very fluid and dynamic self-employed industry at the moment. But we have songs that we think can heal and connect people, and putting them out in the world in both a lasting and far-reaching way feels like the right thing.
To do this we’ve teamed up with Neilson Hubbard in Nashville, who has produced albums for inspiring artists like Mary Gauthier, Sam Baker, Glen Phillips, and Amy Speace. After meeting with him, we’re confident that our visions are aligning, and that he’s going to help us serve these songs, giving them only what they are asking for. This means that overall this record will be fairly stripped down, highlighting the emotional intensity of our live performances.
Many of you have heard some of these songs at shows, like the one below, and asked us about them. This is your chance to help put them into the world in a lasting way.
We wouldn’t be at this particular spot on this path without you, and we cannot thank you enough for the support you’ve shown us. We hope you will continue to be a part of our journey.
What is crowd-funding & why $25,000?
Crowd-funding is kind of like taking out a loan to help cover upfront costs of making and promoting a record, but way better. It’s a mutually beneficial exchange of value. People who connect with our music, and are able to lend support, pledge money that will be used to make and promote a new album, and those people will be repaid by us with music, physical products, and/or experiences, depending on the reward(s) chosen.
This benefits us because we can capture our music in a reproducible format that helps us connect with more people, and it benefits you in what whichever you would like based on the reward package you chose.
Here’s a breakdown of our budget, thanks to our accountant Mavis:
You're probably better at using a calculator than Mavis is, what with your human fingers and all. So you may have noticed that those numbers add up to more than $25,000. We will cover the remaining costs with money we have saved.
Any funds pledged above our goal will be used to offset the amount of savings we will put toward this project. This would also give us the flexibility to take advantage of opportunities that may arise related to the album's release (e.g. an extra month of a PR campaign to continuing spreading the message of our music, travel expenses for a unique performance opportunity).
Thank you for being here and taking the time to consider supporting this project. We would write and play music no matter what, put we know we couldn’t devote our lives to it and make a living doing so without you. You make this work. We are grateful for you every day.
If you believe in us and our music, please consider spreading the word about this project--through social media, email, telephone, carrier pigeon, or just good old conversation.
With all our love,
Crystal, Pete, Benson, Parker, Carla, & Mavis
P.S. We've heard that if backers create a Kickstarter account when they pledge it significantly helps the reward fulfillment process down the line. Please consider this if you don't already have an account.
Special thanks to these folks who captured some of the photos and video we used here:

Interested in multiple rewards? There isn't an option through Kickstarter to pledge for more than one reward level, so here are a couple ways to work around that:
1) If you have a second email address, you can log on to Kickstarter with it and pledge for the other reward. That should allow you to make a separate transaction.
2) You can select one of the rewards you would like, and then add on the cost of the other reward when you're filling in your info. Then just shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org to let us know about it!
A note about estimated delivery dates.
Estimated delivery date listed indicates the main reward delivery. Downloads, physical CDs, handwritten lyrics, poetry books, and tote bags will be delivered prior to the album's official release in April 2019.
For instance, the delivery date for a custom song is listed as December 2019. The items listed above would be sent by April 2019, but the song would be delivered by December 2019.
We are happy to work with you to accommodate specific timeframes. Please feel free to contact us at email@example.com if you need something done by a particular date for a special occasion.
Executive Producer + 2013 Collings OM2H guitar reward
Purchased at Rockin' Robin in Houston, TX. Bill Collings signature on inside label. Our first two albums were recorded with this guitar. Own a piece of Ordinary Elephant history, and become part of it by being the executive producer of our next album.
Comes with a hardshell case and lots of songs left inside. Feel free to get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org to find out if we may cross paths to hand deliver rather than shipping.
Risks and challenges
Our plans are to release the album worldwide in April 2019, but as backers of this project, we want to get it into your hands as soon as it's completed. Realistically, we think that could happen by March.
With any large project, there can be unforeseen obstacles and circumstances that delay the release. However, we've done this before and are well prepared. Should there be any major changes in the timeline, you'll be the first to know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
