Time is precious, especially considering that for many it’s not easy to meet and play regularly.

Everyone who plays tabletop RPG’s has been in this situation. The game is chugging along as your party goes deeper into the dungeon when suddenly combat breaks out! It’s a fast paced, edge of your seat, life or death situation! Swords are clanging, magic spells flying, explosions, more monsters appear, you are immersed in the experience...

Oh wait, wait, wait, “Hey Bob, did you add +2 to your last attack roll from the bard song?” No? Well that last attack would have killed the monster and then then it wouldn’t have interrupted the Wizard casting fireball and the party would have survived!”

It all comes to a screeching halt. The immersion is broken.

Perhaps that’s an extreme example but we all know that combat often plays out with the players acting like accountants (no offense to accountants). You add up bonuses on fingers, scribble temporary modifiers down on scrap paper, every time you roll a d20 to attack you go through that mental checklist to make sure you’re not forgetting something. Another effect of this is the time it takes to do all that every round of combat.

Think of how much time all the players spend during a session making sure they have done the math properly on their rolls. That is valuable time everyone could spend playing rather than adding/subtracting.

What we have and why we need your help

#1 is... A burning desire to put it all together!

We have a robust prototype of the calculation engine—the part that knows if feat x is appropriate when you’re throwing a longsword. This part was hard. It’s already in the cloud, too.

So we know our idea is implementable (the hard part’s done).

We’ve got the app’s functionality listed, have lots of sketches, and have done static mockups of the main screens.

The game is pretty complex, and your phone screen is pretty small. We need your help so we can focus and make a product that is worthy of your gaming sessions.

The more we raise the faster we can bring RPG Attack! to you (and other platforms).

Tom Hansbury – Tom left a job trading in finance to pursue his passion for games and technology. He has been playing RPG’s and designing his own board games for over 20 years.

Stephen Fitzpatrick – is a rules lawyer savant.  He prefers to be called 'precise' or 'detail oriented'.  He's actually sort of obsessive.  He has a degree in Mathematics and studied astrophysics for fun. He went to math camp AND space camp, he's that kind of nerd. He also draws.

Similarly, items like bracers of archery which add competence bonuses to attack can be managed by simply updating the appropriate bonus type.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

We’ve done a lot of the hard work designing an interface and architecting a calculation engine. The engine is flexible enough to be as compatible with house-rules as we need, which was not trivial, consider this a challenge-faced! Putting it all together should be a smooth process but there could always be unforeseen problems that will hold up development. We’ll certainly be keeping our backers up to date on our progress.

The implementation will be harder than your average app, but we’ve got experience with projects like Cornell's DARPA Grand Challenge (http://www.cis.cornell.edu/boom/2005/ProjectArchive/dgc/default.aspx), so we're up for the challenge.

Also the zombie apocalypse would probably delay things…
