High adrenaline end of the world retro platformer. Featuring Zombies, Ninjas, Robots, Pirates, Aliens, and your designs!
Apocalypse Overload takes all the ways that the world could end and pits them against each other in the form of a retro platformer.
The story of the game is that the world is ending, and everything that could have gone wrong, did. The zombies are coming, vampires rule the night, pirates are on the high seas, robots have turned against their creators, meteors are coming and crashing into us! Your friends have been taken over by one of these apocalyptic scenarios and it is up to you to save them all and bring them through the end times.
The basics of the game are dodging obstacles with jumping and sliding, fighting enemies with attacks, and changing your abilities to overcome specific obstacles. The levels will require you to change between your abilities and pick up power-ups along the way for a bit of extra strength. Some powers will grant you active abilities like double jumping, others will be passive like being able to run across hot coals without being burned.
We love the retro games of platformers with pixel graphics and the movement to bring back that golden age of gaming. We thought that many games in this genre of retro style games need some more progression, not only with levels, but with abilities and strengths as well.
The levels will be a start at progressions and will be changing landscapes and challenges as you go. The game will be harder from the start of the level and it will pile on the difficulty from there. To offset that you will be unlocking more and more abilities and lives the farther you go.
Our inspiration for the design of the game is coming from many of our favorite games from when we were young. We think of the game as a combination of a platformer, dungeon battler, and a perpetual motion game. Many of the perpetual motion games are infinite runners, but get much of our inspiration from games such as Starfox and Raiden X. We will have level progression similar to Mario. We will have hidden secrets like in Starfox. We will give the player amazing and interesting powers like in Kirby and Megaman. Like in Kirby, if you get hit the power will go away and you will have one more hit before dying. Don't worry, you can access a reserve of powers by hitting pause and applying one of the powers you've saved up, or using one from your quick action queue.
There are many features of this game, here is a short overview of them:
- Playable characters that can jump, slide/duck, attack, ground pound, and use special abilities.
- 3 starter classes that have unique abilities and other characteristics that will have importance in game-play.
- A huge map of levels depicting progression and story to rescue your friends and stop the end of the world!
- Robust platform game engine that provides exciting and dangerous levels with much to interact with and parallax background.
- Hordes of enemies, Zombies, Ninjas, Pirates, Robots, Aliens, oh my!
- Encounter epic bosses designed with demolishing moves and strategize that have the upper hand.
- Use boosts that give you special timed abilities making for fun and memorable game-play.
- Collect coins and spend them on special items that will come in handy during your adventure.
At the OBSTACLE DESIGNER pledge level you can design an obstacle in game. Choose from 3 types; decorative, destructible, or a trap. Your imagination is limitless!
At the IN-GAME APPEARANCE pledge level you can design a non-player character in game. Choose from citizen, prisoner, or mob. The world is ending we need a ton of victims!
At the ENEMY DESIGNER pledge level you can design an enemy in game. Choose from many types, ground attacker, flyer, projectile shooting, or suicide exploder. You think of it, we can build it!
At the ABILITY DESIGNER pledge level you can design playable character ability in game. Choose from 3 types; melee, projectile, or area of effect. Help us make these super cool or funny!
At the POTION DESIGNER pledge level you can design a power-up in game. Choose from many attributes; invincible, increases damage, jet pack, walk on water, if it’s cool it’s going in!
At the BOSS DESIGNER pledge level you can design a boss in game. Decide what it looks like, what its moves are, how it acts, and its weakness. Make your mark to help make this game these bosses big, bad, and memorable.
At the CLASS DESIGNER pledge level you can design a playable character class in game. Decide its theme, what are some of its visual characteristics, and what some of its moves are. Choose from mobility attributes, melee attacks, projectile attacks, and super-moves. Receive unlimited in game potions to use your class anytime you want!
At the LEVEL DESIGNER pledge level you can design a playable level theme in game and area on the map. Have access to that area at launch unlike no one else. What will you come up with? Floating castle? Mech inspired fortress? Or perhaps cotton candy clouds and rainbow slides? What ever it is we’ll make it happen!
We are two game industry veterans with 17 years of experience between us. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area and are working on this project full time.
Robert (Artist) is a sucker for nostalgia retro gaming experiences and is a toy making enthusiast. He brings over 15 years of experience in internet and mobile gaming. Starting out his career as an animator doing in-betweens, today he is an Entrepreneur and Creative Director whose focus is delivering fun and innovative experiences. His previous experience includes co-founding and creative director at Electrotank where he produced games for clients like Disney, Pixar, Neopets, Mattel, and Comedy Central to name a few. David (Designer/Developer) loves games that have complex real time components, and the ability to customize characters. Even with only 2 years of experience making games, he has become a Senior Product Manager, and has won competitions in design including winning the Games Vertical in Mega Startup Weekend.

To provide that nostalgic background music sound, we're planning a retro chiptune feel while using modern audio techniques. To do this we've hired industry veterans Zoe and Athen Ananda to compose our background music. They are already ampping up the game experience! Check out a track they wrote for the game's intro and main anthem.
The concept for Apocalypse Overload was conceived in November 2011. At first it was a board game idea; however, in June when Robert and David got together, we decided it would work much better in the form of a digital game. We put our strengths together and got a playable alpha up in 6 weeks, and are working on refining it to beta quality right now! We expect to have the beta out by November, and the full game early next year on PC/Mac/Linux. By the end of February it will be live on mobile (Android and iOS) if we meet the stretch goal.

We have the core systems built, but need a good bit more art and design to finish the project. We have a number of artists on board to help us push to the finish, and a developer designated full time to getting the game out on time.

Making a game is risky and time consuming. We will release a game that is fun, and finding the fun in a game is not always as fast as we might like. We are putting in some buffer time, but due to the uncertainties dates might slip.
As we are developing the game details of it may change. We aren't trying to trick you into expecting things that won't be in the game or surprising you with things that were never promised. If we start finding that parts of the game did not turn out as fun as expected they will be either cut or postponed until we can make them fun.
All the content of the game may not be in at launch. We will be updating the game as the content is developed so that we can have good polish on the first set of levels and abilities that we release. Most platforms allow for free updates, and we will be taking advantage of them often. The platforms that do not allow for free updates will be among the last we release, and we will do our best to make it easy for all of you to get the updates at the minimal possible cost.
Each platform on which we release will have its own set of challenges and difficulties. The platforms we support will not all be released at the same time, so that we can release as quickly as possible and address the challenges and difficulties of the platforms one at a time.
