About this project

Hello. We are Optiko.

We collaborate with amateur photographers from all over the world to share their analogue photographs on our website and in our printed publications.

We are planning our first printed journal for later this year. It will be building on what we have achieved with our previous publications, but offering more content, inspiration and value money for our readers. With the support of our many contributors and pledges through this project, we will produce a quality 280 page, professionally printed journal that will feature articles, photo essays, interviews and many of the outstanding photographs that have been submitted to us.

Optiko was created in 2011 by Steve King (later joined by his brother Adam) as an online project, to highlight the work of the many analogue photographers that we were aware of, but also to allow other photographers to share their work on our Flickr group pool.

We believe that photographs should be seen in print as well as on screen, so we made a decision in 2012 to produce our first zine. 6 years and 7 zines later, the number of submissions has far exceeded the number of pages the zines can accommodate. This project will allow us to include many more of these submissions, without losing focus of our original objectives.

Until now, all of our zines have been funded by ourselves or pre-order and online sales. Financially, our aim until this point has been to break even for each issue. Each issue is priced to cover printing and postagecosts which are high due to the limited number of issues printed. This project, assuming we meet our target, will cover the production costs for what we have calculated will be the minimum number of orders needed to cover these costs. Any amount raised that exceeds our target will be used as outlined in our 'stretch goals'.

Journal Specifics:

Size: A5 (148x210mm)

Pages: 276 + Cover.

Material - Inside Pages: Silk, 170gsm

Material - Cover: Silk, 350gsm, Soft Touch Lamination.

Spine Width: 23mm

Weight: Approx. 700g

Stretch Goals:

Should we find ourselves with the benefit of additional funds by exceeding the target of the project, we will look at getting further copies printed that we can use for marketing and promotional purposes as well looking to get the Journal into independent book stores at home and abroad. We intend to explore sponsored adverts on social media platforms too, something we have never done before, should funds allow this.

Journal Content:

Here's a small sample of the large number of submissions we have received. We will share more details about the content with regular updating when the project gets underway.

Risks and challenges

Even with the best plans in place, there are bound to be some delays or unexpected issues. We should know as we have experienced most of them before with the zines, but we have always overcome them one way or another. Our commitment, knowledge and work ethic will see us bringing this project to fruition one way or another.
