This is a film about accepting and embracing life as it is.
Persist deals with addiction, not the experiences of an addict, but the experiences of people who love an addict. The lead character of our film finds the courage to accept that despite pain and disappointment, life can and does go on.
Persist is the story of a man whose
world becomes dark when his wife relapses into substance abuse and disappears.
The care of his young son, his job and his personal passions all fade in
importance as he obsesses over rescuing the woman he's built his life with. His
wife's path of self destruction progressively demolishes his own well being and
the well being of their boy. This is not a story where everything turns out as
the hero has hoped. It is a story of a man who begins to accept the things he can not change and find the courage to change the things he can.
Director Justin Spicer
and Producer Erik Olson began working together on commercial video productions
and short films in 2004.
WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO FINISH THIS PROJECT
A rough cut of Persist has been
completed. The filmmakers wish to continue drafting the edit until the
story is presented at its optimal capacity. Filmed in High Definition on
the Red One camera in the raw format, the imagery will be greatly improved
through the process of color correction. The story requires the
completion of two special effects shots featuring a raven which is a prevalent
theme throughout the story. The musical score for the film has been written
and must now be recorded with the participation of studio musicians. Once
the post-production of the film is complete it will then be packaged as a DVD
that will be submitted to festivals along with all necessary materials
including a transcript of the film and movie posters. The completed
package for the film will be submitted to widely recognized film festivals
around the world. The filmmakers are hopeful of translating the film into
several other languages. Ultimately the filmmakers would like to attend
the festivals where Persist is featured in order to represent the film,
its message and to utilize the film's recognition to propel their careers
THE CAST &
The cast and crew of Persist were assembled from
the most capable and dedicated professionals the director and producer have
worked with during their combined twenty years creating films and videos in
Colorado. Throughout the production, the team shared their appreciation
for the project's high level of preparation and professionalism. It is
these filmmakers' belief that cutting-edge technology and equipment are
secondary to the experience and vision of the technicians assembled to put the
gear to use. From the writing and pre-production of this film through the
completion of principal photography, this crew has excelled in creating the
teamwork and organization that has brought this collaborative vision to life.
Countless people struggle and suffer with their efforts to heal others. Many find a path to healing when they begin to accept that no one other than the addict
can commit him or herself to a path towards wholeness.
Few if any
films seem to focus on the grief experienced not by the addicts themselves but
by the people close to them. Our film provides insights into common dilemmas
faced by those who's hearts are pained by a loved one's substance abuse. Our
story and our characters bring to light the agonizing yet illuminating process
of coming to accept that in life there are some things we simply can not
HOW PERSIST CAME TO BE
Persist is a
fictionalized account of true events that have affected my life. Addiction has
not only been my family's primary dinner table topic throughout my life, it has
been a member of the family who sometimes stayed out of sight and at other
times obscured our loved one with an unrecognizable demonic mask.
For each of us,
distinguishing between the man we loved and the disease that plagued him was sometimes impossible. Together we sought to understand how we could provide
unconditional love for the man while setting boundaries to protect
ourselves from the devastation caused by his disease.
These experiences in my
life did not culminate in a happy fairytale ending. The heartache and struggles
of my upbringing led me to search for strength within myself. As I have
continued to process what wisdom may have come from my family's journey I have found myself driven to construct
and share this story. The insights I have passionately sought to share through
this film are these. The only person one can change and heal is one's self. Also there is much to be gained from
examining the statement: To thine own self be true.
The viewer is free to take from the story what is relevant for them, but It is my hope
as well that this film will provide useful insights and encouragement for those
seeking to improve their relationships with their families, friends and above
all with themselves.
Thank you for taking
the time to learn about our film and it's goals and also for considering
providing support for our project.
