HEART OF DARKNESS – OP IS STRETCHING OPERA AND YOU CAN HELP US STRETCH OUR GOAL
Here are some of the hand-crafted tusks that are underway by our design team!
KICKSTARTER SUCCESS! and NEW GOAL OF RAISING AN EXTRA $5000
Thanks to the generous support of 45 backers, we have achieved our original $7000 goal for this Kickstarter campaign which will fund the fabrication of 60 life-sized tusks - an essential part of our production and our effort to bring attention to the horrors of the ivory trade.
As we move forward with the project, we’re hoping to raise an additional $5,000 to support this visual art→opera collision.
The lobby will be festooned with large panels (12' x 8') of Matt Kish's spectacular artwork for Heart of Darkness, which will be embedded between the life-sized tusks.
In May 2015, Opera Parallèle will present four performances of Tarik O'Regan's opera Heart of Darkness, with a libretto by Tom Phillips, and based on Joseph Conrad's classic novella. The opera takes us on a mystical river journey into the human soul in a typical OP riveting and cutting-edge experience.
As we embark upon presenting the American Premiere of Heart of Darkness, we want to uphold our goal of engaging our audience with compelling new works. One way we do this is by bringing the story to life with the creative use of artwork and new technology. The rich symbolism found in Heart of Darkness’ libretto will be enhanced by the use of a completely immersive art installation that will include the 60 giant tusks and will now be integrated amidst the large panels of Matt Kish's art.
This immersive environment, right as you enter the hall, will continue the push the boundary of the operatic experience.
WHO ARE WE?
The award-winning Opera Parallèle is a professional, nonprofit organization that develops and performs contemporary chamber opera. These operas are internationally acclaimed but rarely performed. Opera Parallèle is the only organization in the Bay Area presenting fully cast and staged contemporary chamber operas exclusively. Risks and challenges
The art installation we have planned for this opera is integral to the production. It will take our artists many hours to complete and we realize that we are being ambitious for bringing this immersive element to the stage. However, the skill level of everyone involved is supremely high. With their training and abilities, we are certain they are up to the task.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
