About this project
We love riding powder. Therefore, we committed to making the best powder ski & snowboard jacket in the world. Made of high performance, eco-friendly materials. Functionally shaped, packed with lots of useful features and made affordable by the most open company in the outerwear industry.
“It all started about a year ago, after a whole day of hiking up mountains to ride deep powder.” says co-founder Martijn Jegerings. “We decided it was time to shake up the industry. We simply weren’t satisfied with the available outerwear and set a clear goal: Let’s make the best products for powder days affordable.”
We believe that an industry, so greatly dependent on nature, should do everything in its powers to preserve it. Therefore we teamed up with Sympatex, incorporating the only truly eco-friendly material, that is 100% made out of recycled bottles.
The Open One is a jacket that can easily compete, on terms of design and performance, with the top level products of brands like Patagonia, Arc’teryx, Norrøna and Peak Performance. However, there is one significant difference. The jacket costs only a fraction of its competitors.
The Open One is a so called 3-layer jacket. Meaning that it is the perfect outer-shell. Protecting you against heavy snow storms and extreme wind gusts. The 3-layer system is also known as the union system.
Together with a base-layer (thermo) and mid-layer (soft-shell/down) you can easily adjust how warm you want to feel on the mountain. Note that the Open One does not have any insulation and by picking the right base and mid-layers you can easily wear the same jacket both during the coldest arctic days as well as the sunny spring days.
UPDATE: Thanks to backer Vincent de Jong and his friend Mike Woning we have added a print to our Easy Smartphone Access. They pointed out that smartphones interfere signals send by avalanche rescue beacons. So our advice is, when wearing a beacon, always put your phone into your backpack. Check your beacon for the specifications.
The reason we can offer this jacket, starting at € 249, is that we have completely gotten rid of the unnecessary expensive steps in the jacket delivery cycle.
By cutting out the middle men the traditional mark-up is radically reduced. Meaning we can offer the same quality for a much better price.
Note: The t-shirts are not produced by Open Wear. We have teamed up with Spreadshirt.net for the t-shirts. The t-shirts are made of 100% organic bio cotton.
We invite our backers and community to get creative and help us pick the next colours to add. For those into Photoshop, we made a file available that allows you to easily design the colours of the jacket yourself. You can download it here.
For our product development and production, we teamed up with Chris Westen from the company West-house in Hong Kong. He has more than 16 years of experience in the snow apparel industry, with an extensive supply and production network in Asia.
He is a passionate snowboarder, with the drive to get the best the first. Specialist in translating ideas into final products, with focus on innovation. Guiding the development process from sketch to final production.
We will produce in BSCI accredited facilities, which means that we stand for fair salaries, fair working hours and a safe environment to work in, for the people who do the actual assembly of our product.
We have a strong commitment to our impact on the environment. We will produce as clean as we can, with environmentally friendly materials as much as we can. We will not add useless hangtags and we will use recycled and recyclable materials where we can.
We don’t stop after this campaign. With your help we can really open up the outerwear industry. Because if you have nothing to hide… Why not be open about it? We promise to be:
- Open for the changes you demand
- Open about our production
- Open about our pricing
- Open about our contribution to a better world.
Times that companies could hide behind expensive campaigns are over. We will be open about everything. Our success as well as our learnings.
Our mission: “We want you to fully enjoy the best days of the season and therefore we make the best products and make them affordable.”

Risks and challenges
The current design for the Open One has been finalized and the initial prototypes have been built and tested. We’ve already laid out our future production plan and already talked about this with our partner in manufacturing. During designing the initial prototype, we already spent some months working together with our partners.
In all matters we will always keep an open communication to our backers and update you frequently.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
