The Open Rail Kickstarter is ending soon. We appreciate all of your support! After the Kickstarter project, please visit our website at http://www.openrail.net for Open Rail and Linear Guide Accessories, etc. plus many more items for your DIY builds.
Hello. We are Mark and Trish Carew of Phlatboyz. Thank you for checking out our kickstarter project and watching our intro video. We know the video is a bit choppy due to over editing but it was shot completely unscripted and we just tried to have fun with it.
Our First Kickstart!
This is our first Kickstarter and we are extremely excited to introduce you to our latest creation, Open Rail. This is a new Open Source Universal Linear Rail System designed to be used in conjunction with various sizes of readily available T-Slot aluminum extrusions.

Why Open Rail...
First and foremost, the ability to create machines and linear applications of various shapes and sizes. Precise heavy and light duty rail systems are one of the highest cost of creating any machine that requires linear motion. We believe that everyone should have an affordable option to be able to create a linear rail system of any size and configuration you feel is appropriate for your project, so we give you the Open Rail System!
The Open Rail system will be made of 6061-T5 Aluminum with Black Hard Coat Anodized, Type III, which means we will have the ability to use both metal v wheels for heavy duty applications and plastic v wheels for quiet light duty applications. This, along with Open Rail's unique ability to adapt to many different aluminum extrusions configurations makes it the most versatile linear rail system available today. This version of Open Rail is compatible with all Misumi's 5 series extrusions. Future plans include expanding the Open Rail line to include more of the Misumi's larger series as well as other popular T-Slot extrusions such as 80/20.
The linear V guides have been around for a long time. The problem in the past has been mounting them to existing extrusions. This can be difficult and unconventional. Open Rail was designed to make installation a breeze (easily installs with included screws and t-nuts) and completely customizable unique to each machine.
The funds will be used to purchase the extrusion tool and initial run of material. Our goal amount is the minimum amount needed to complete this project and cover the cost of shipping the rewards which is estimated at $15 per reward. If we are fortunate enough to exceed our goal we will either purchase additional Open Rail material or buy wheels, bearings, and accessories to help further along this project. Our goal is a retail cost under $10 for a 2000mm stick of Open Rail. We are working with several extruders to try to get the best pricing. International orders are accepted and actual shipping costs will apply.
We are really excited about the possibilities that will be available once The Open Rail System has become a reality. Let's come together to make Open Rail available and put the power of affordable custom machine design in the hands of the Makers!
Thank you all so much for your support!!!
