Introducing the Cable Fondler Mini!
Hey Kickstarters! Thanks for stopping by, we really hope you enjoy this campaign and want to help us bring it the Cable Fondler Mini to life so we can help keep your cables on the table!
Who we are
Open Parachutes is a design experiment by Damon & Jono. We are two curious creative chaps who enjoy creating things that improve your day to day experiences.
A couple of years ago we released the original Cable Fondler to fanfare on design blogs like FastCoDesign, Wired & Cult of Mac. Since then we have been busy creating Stepsie a project management tool, which explains our absence from the design space. Now we are back and we need your help to bring this Cable Fondler Mini to life!
Why we need your help
We need to meet the minimum order numbers to get these made. Basically all the producers we have contacted won't touch us unless we order at least 200 of these. That might not seem like a huge stumbling block but the reality is we don't have $1700 AUD spare and need you guys to help make this happen!
Earlier sketches & designs
The first Cable Fondler has had an interesting creative evolution. The first prototypes began as what would be a solid injection moulded device. It then went on the 'Panda diet' and became the slimmed down, laser cut bamboo version with 5 cable slots.
We realised that most people using these didn't need accommodation for 5 cables hence the reason we are now releasing the Cable Fondler Mini. 3 is not only a magic number it's perfect for your day to day cable needs.

How does this attach to the desktop?
Using the finest double sided tape. It's not the most romantic of partnerships but it's very practical, robust and much more durable and reliable that suction cup tape. We tried the suction cup tape and as cool as it is, it simply doesn't stick well enough to most surface types. Double sided tape sticks perfectly to all surfaces and it won't damage your desktop if you do need to remove it.
Our production plan
If we are successful with this campaign we will then have these laser cut, sanded, tested, packaged and sent out to each of you. Although a simple product there are a number of things that must come together to ensure your cables have the best possible fondling experience. The diagram below illustrates the production and logistics.
Why did you call this the Cable Fondler?
For a giggle and a good time! You have to enjoy yourself in this world :D
Have a top day and hopefully you can help us make the Cable Fondler Mini a feature on your desktops!

Risks and challenges
We have a had several Cable Fondler Minis produced and they all work a charm, however the main challenges are as follows:-
-Ensuring the bamboo is sustainably sourced (FSC), laser cut and sanded to the highest standard.
-Sustainable packaging for the cable fonlder mini & double sided tape. This has been prototyped but not yet produced. We are confident we can deliver on this as it is very straight forward to make but we haven't produced this at volume yet so there are risks associated with that.
The cable fondlers will be shipped out of Hong Kong to several different distribution points worldwide so there is of course the potential for some logistic issues, but we have established solid relationships with contractors who have helped us before so this is also of small risk.
We understand that we may encounter some problems due to this being our first KickStarter project but we have managed to deliver the original Cable Fondler so we are confident we can conquer any challenges to ensure all backers get their Cable Fondler Mini on time and to the highest quality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
