We are launching this campaign because we are releasing the film independently following the overwhelming response to the film, which recently picked up the Special Jury prize at Silverdocs, and is described by The Washington Post as a "Devastating verité portrait of the emergency room...a sad, funny, tense deeply affecting day-in-the-life of an under-resourced public hospital."
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Together, we will launch a grassroots promotional and community outreach initiative to support our release in the Fall. The more successful these initial openings are, the wider we can expand across the country, working with partners to engage communities in unique ways that can only be done in a theatrical setting.
Your help will allow us to:
- Promote our theatrical release in NY, LA, and Oakland by working with local and national stakeholder organizations to raise visibility of the film and the issue of access to care.
- Provide free tickets to communities that typically do not go to the theaters to watch an indie documentary. Since this film is about their community, we will partner with local and national organizations to hold sponsored screenings.
- Cover the logistical costs incurred by our non-profit Open'hood in pulling this whole thing off.
I am...lucky my wife's job provides health insurance for my family. I am... grateful to have the freedom to tell stories that mean something to me. I am... inspired by the thousands of people I have met in Highland Hospital's waiting room since I began working on this project in 2007.
From the very beginning, this project has been about giving a voice to the millions of people that lack health care insurance. But it is also very personal for me. The Waiting Room developed from stories my wife, a speech pathologist at Highland Hospital, told me about the struggles and resilience of her patient population. And a few years ago, as the contentious vote for health care reform got louder, it occurred to me that the people who were not participating in the debate were the very people we were fighting over: those stuck in waiting rooms at underfunded public hospitals all over the country.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING PROJECT
Our theatrical release and outreach efforts will run concurrent with a digital storytelling project now underway in the waiting room itself. That project is now collecting stories, photographs, songs and other moments that unfold every day at Highland Hospital. With your help we can reveal hundreds of tiny moments of people that are too often boiled down to a statistic or a headline.
Your help, whether large or small, will allow these important stories to reach a wider, more influential audience. And at this moment as our nation considers changes to the health care system these stories are more important than ever. Because whether it’s a housekeeper or a surgeon, an unemployed plumber or an entrepreneur...in the waiting room every voice matters.

As we prepare to head into the final stretch we wanted to share a video (link below) about our recent visit to Washington, DC featuring comments from Congresswoman Barbara Lee and director Pete Nicks. We screened the film in the Cannon Caucus Room to a packed house that included health care stakeholders, congressional aides, health policy experts and the general public. It was quite an experience and remarkable exposure for both the film and the issue of access to care.
With your support we will continue to make an impact by getting The Waiting Room out to theaters nationwide in preparation for our national broadcast premiere next year on PBS. The film, a co-production of Open'hood and ITVS in association with Peer Review Films, will air nationally on Independent Lens in 2013.
