The Opechee Haunt is an immersive home haunt attraction located in Glendale, California. We’ve been creating Halloween experiences since 2011, making 2018 our 8th consecutive year of haunt operation.
What sets The Opechee Haunt apart from other Halloween attractions is the age of our team. We are mostly made up of a teen staff, which changes every season. The Opechee Haunt’s founder and creative director Sam Kellman is only fifteen years old, yet every year he strives to make the haunt experience better and better by adding a new theme, a love for storytelling and technology, and as much immersive detail as he can muster.
This year, we are planning to take these elements to an entirely new level with our all-new 2018 attraction Pirates of the Caribbean: Sail with the Tide.
Once guests arrive at the experience, they will immediately be transported to the iconic New Orleans bayou from the classic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disneyland. Then, they are lead onto the dock of Laffite’s Landing Cruise Co., a bayou tour company inspired by the loading area of the original attraction.
Just before their tour begins, they are interrupted by an occupant of the bayou. He may look familiar to those of you who have been on the ride.
His name is Sawyer Johnson, a 70-year-old man who resides in a small shack elevated above the water. Though he seems quite ordinary, he is actually the exact opposite. He possesses a magical amulet that was discovered by his father years ago along the Caribbean islands which has the power to travel back in time... or so the legend says. Sawyer recruits the guests to cancel their tour and help him on a swashbuckling quest for a mystical treasure located somewhere along the Spanish Main.
Why does Sawyer need your help to travel back in time, you may ask? Well, that’s just something you’ll have to find out for yourself once you make your visit to the bayou.
What we can promise is an adventure like no other, as you travel out from the bayou and onto uncharted waters, facing great dangers, making courageous allies, and maybe even spotting some familiar faces along the way- this journey is one that can only be experienced in person.
Getting the experience right is something that was very challenging, yet very important, to us when designing a haunted attraction based on such a beloved ride as Pirates of the Caribbean. The fans want what the fans want, and this is definitely the experience for any Pirates of the Caribbean, Disneyland, or haunted attraction fan alike!
The overall experience will last around 15-20 minutes, starting with a show/yard display portion to start everything off (similar to our Jack’s Halloween JamBOOree show in layout), which then transitions into a walkthrough portion that will put guests right in the middle of the action as they venture from location to location in small groups searching for a stolen treasure.
The walkthrough portion will be interactive, as one lucky guest from each party will possess Sawyer’s magical amulet, giving groups the opportunity to control certain effects and narrative aspects of the experience themselves, possibly deciding what happens next on their adventure. Danger lurks, so be sure ye make the right decisions, mateys!
Throughout this portion, you'll be guided by a character inspired by the iconic Jolly Roger skull from the Disneyland attraction. He is to be voiced by none other than Mark Silverman, an incredible voice actor best known for his work as Rod Serling in The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction, as well as various other voices for Disney.
In addition, this experience will be completely family friendly, as it is suitable for swashbucklers of all ages, making it a great destination for the 2018 SoCal Haunt Season!
So here's where you can help. We know that this is an ambitious project, so to make our awesome Pirates of the Caribbean dreams a reality, we need support. Our goal is to raise a total of $3,500 gold doubloons to bring this experience to life.
The money will be split up amongst props, sets/production design, tech, and even costumes (yes, we hope to design our very own Cast Member costumes, with classic Disney-style name badges and all)!
The following is a breakdown of how the funds we raise will specifically be split into the budgeting of the attraction:
But your donations don't go without a thank you from us. That's why we have some super special rewards for our backers!
We have some awesome rewards set up for our backers starting at just $10, so be sure to check those out.
Rewards include everything from exclusive posters and T-shirts, to Front-of-the-Line passes, to a special behind the scenes tour, and much MORE!
Speaking of exclusive T-shirts, check these out. These are only available to Kickstarter backers, custom designed by animator Craig Kellman and printed by the amazing folks at Tee No Evil.
Every dollar counts, so please consider supporting! Share on social media with #OpecheePirates and spread the word if you can!
We don't want you to have to wait until October rolls around to experience any of the swashbuckling pirate goodness we have planned, so... you won't have to!
We are bringing a special preview event to the Midsummer Scream Halloween Festival in Long Beach this July, where you will be able to experience an EXCLUSIVE attraction that sets the stage for the haunt in October. It will explain the backstory of our main character; a prequel, if you will.
So be sure to look out for news and updates regarding that as well as the October haunt attraction!
The Opechee Haunt has its best year yet all planned out for 2018. With the valued support of people like you, this epic experience can become a reality. We are huge fans of the Disneyland ride, and can promise you that there is definitely a tremendous amount of love and hard work going into this project!
Five years ago, Sam Kellman created his first walkthrough haunt around the house with live actors, not a display as in the years prior. That walkthrough was Pirates of the Caribbean. Some cheap plastic skulls, a few small tikis Sam had recently purchased in Hawaii, and a bunch of left over wine bottles helped to create the experience.
But now it's time for the real deal. Let's make that 2013 Sam proud.
This is Pirates of the Caribbean: Sail with the Tide!
Risks and challenges
There are many risks and challenges when it comes to creating any haunted attraction or immersive experience, but the main challenge here is the fundraising.
If the campaign for this attraction is not completely funded, we will not carry on with the project, as we need a very specific budget to create this amazing experience in the best way possible! Remember that if we are funded, the attraction will run with a 100% FREE price of admission!
If we unfortunately do not receive the necessary funding, we will instead go with a backup attraction, but trust us, this is definitely our first choice when it comes to The Opechee Haunt 2018!
* If your item is to be redeemed at "REWARD PICKUP", there will be a special stand at the event in October where you can collect your reward by name.
