About this project
The Oomph is the perfect coffee companion, designed for coffee lovers by coffee geeks.
From daily home and office use to occasional use on the camp site, The Oomph is designed to brew amazing coffee and keep it at the perfect drinking temperature. Drink straight from the Oomph Coffee Maker or decant into a cup, it's up to you!
All the device needs is fresh coffee, hot water and you.
The Oomph is a simple to use, ergonomically designed device which holds upto 13fl oz. of perfectly brewed coffee.
The Oomph takes the principles of an espresso machine and puts them into your hands. Using pressure to create a top quality cup of coffee every time, The Oomph is quick to brew, easy to use and very fast to clean.
The Oomph is a self-contained coffee maker and travel cup. Using our 3 step process it is easy to make a perfect cup of coffee.
Step 1 - Add Fresh Coffee
25g of Fresh Ground Coffee for the full 13fl oz.
Step 2 - Hot Water
Slowly add hot water to the fill level, 92c is just about perfect.
The water begins to travel through the brewing coffee and rise up on the outside having passed through the Smart Flow Turbine, as you can see above.
Step 3 - Plunge & Enjoy Great Coffee
Once the water stops rising, top up with hot water & add the outer shell. The piston will auto-locate and you can now add pressure by plunging the top down - taking about 30 seconds.
Now relax with a lovely cup of coffee.
Step 3a (optional) - Sugar & Milk
At this point you can unscrew the cap to add milk & sugar as desired. Then simply screw the lid back on and your coffee is ready to drink.
Once all the coffee has been extracted the grinds will 'lock out' with a click - this prevents already brewed coffee interacting with the grinds again causing over extraction and increased bitterness.
Cleaning is easy - simply knock out the coffee grinds & add a little water. Add the plunger and pull backward and forward for around 15 seconds. Pour out the water and you're done - its ready for your next brew.
The Oomph coffee maker has been designed to be the perfect companion, helping you to make the perfect cup of coffee anywhere.
As a self-contained device, The Oomph allows you to drink straight from the device or decant into a cup or two - the choice is yours.
The Morning Commute is an issue for many coffee lovers. Ergonomically designed to fit an adult's hand, The Oomph is cleverly designed to help prevent spills, meaning there is no danger of burns on the train or bus. Plus it fits perfectly into most car cup holders. It’s the ideal travel mug, insulated & containing a perfect brew! (No more spending £4+ at that service station for a sub-standard brew!).
In the Office this means that you no longer need to put up with gritty instant coffee, stale percolator coffee or over extracted cafetiere cups of hardship. Instead, with The Oomph you get to enjoy the perfect brew quickly and easily, plus no sharing your mug. You’ll also get bragging rights to the best tasting coffee and best gadget in the office.
At Home the sleek design of The Oomph coffee maker means it will look fantastic on your coffee table or on your kitchen counter. The design also means that there will never be a mess on your counter top from a pour over coffee gone wrong or using to much pressure to plunge your cafetiere device.
When Rambling and Camping we all miss great cups of coffee, we tend to get stuck with the instant type or an over extracted french press – with The Oomph device these days are behind us. As long as you’ve got hot water fresh from your camping stove and coffee, you will be the envy of the camp site with your delicious cup of coffee.
Six years ago, Matthew (a coffee lover and engineer) sat on a train sipping bland, stale, instant coffee and realised that he wanted to be able to have great tasting coffee regardless of where he was. He trawled the internet for solutions but found very little. Matthew set to designing and building the product he wanted; a portable coffee maker & travel cup in one, which replicated the quality of coffee produced by a coffee machine, anywhere.
Since then Matthew has been designing, iterating and improving time after time until finally his portable coffee maker was perfected.
We've tested The Oomph a lot, using our final prototype every day since it arrived. Some of the most important aspects we've tested are:
- Great durability.
- Ability to brew a range of different coffee grinds.
- Ensuring that the oomph tastes richer with a more substantial mouth-feel than other devices on the market.
- Ability to get the best out of various grades of coffee.
- No over-extracted bitter taste.
- Simple and Easy to Use.
We have also had experts put The Oomph Coffee Maker through its paces, including Jonny England (World Barista Championship Judge, Certified World Brewers Cup Judge, Q Grader and SCAE certified trainer).
During the past few years, Matthew has filed and has patents pending on the device. He has been working with industry experts (in coffee, plastics and other fields) and now has a final working prototype - this means we are now ready for manufacture, which is where you come in.

Risks and challenges
We know there are several key risks to be evaluated and eliminated within our KickStarter Project. We believe these are risks, based on the experience of industry experts and suppliers that we have already sourced. Also some have been uncovered from our prototyping, testing and studying of other crowdfunding campaigns for other "food & drink" based devices.
During prototyping not all materials have been available to us that will be during full production. This means that prior to a full production run we have allowed time for a small test run of several materials to ensure they meet our exacting standards and other relevant industry bodies to ensure safety & durability. Then and only then will we proceed to our final production run.
All types of manufacturing come with their own risks, from factory delays to moulds breaking and logistical errors. We are working to eliminate as many of these potential risks as possible, this has included design iterations to make tooling of the moulds easier and of course having an open dialogue with multiple manufacturers too. As part of our risk mitigation we have sourced a mould manufacturer and food-safe plastics manufacturer in the same vicinity - this should reduce potential delays and should issues occur alleviate the pressure they cause.
3. Multiple Parts = Multiple Suppliers
Although the number of parts is limited, some of the parts (such as the rubber seals) will need to be made in a separate factory specialising in this material to ensure it meets our exacting requirements. Another part (the fine metal filter) will also be manufactured separately. This ultimately means we are reliant on the time-frames of several manufacturers being accurate (though our time scales include realistic buffers on this).
