About

Who Are We?

We are a team of developers who are passionate about video games and want to build a media company around the idea of just talking about gamesWe feel there isn't a media outlet for this yet - not one that combines player curated content and lets you discover and follow your favorite game players or game developers in one location.

What's Different About Our Site

The best thing about our site is: it's run by developers who happen to LOVE video games. We are NOT a media company, we are NOT journalists, we have no parent company or ideology to appeal to. We are going to work with the gaming community directly to constantly improve it. What other games media site can tell you that?

Here's an example:

Our content will be curated from aspiring writers, developers, YouTube channels, and Twitch streamers. All with their own accounts that you can like, follow, chat with, and customize your experience on our site. The ratings and reviews on our site come straight from other gamers and our curators on the site. And you can become a curator yourself.

Here's another example:

Why should ratings be limited to this singular concept of a stagnant value between 1 and 10? The ratings shown to you should be dynamic and take into account the things you enjoy about games, the people you follow and have similarities with. These things should be taken into account when you are shown a "rating" which is basically a "recommendation" on whether you would like the game or not.

Out with the old, in with the new. We will try to expand on the common review systems in place to make them more relevant to you (objectivity).

About The Tech

If you are wondering how we will accomplish this and have specific questions we invite you to leave your comments and feedback here on Kickstarter.

We're building everything from the ground-up with the latest web technology and have a mobile-first initiative here. We are using a custom built CMS for entering data onto the site (back-end) and the CMS is separate and does not control anything on the front-end. This gives us both a separation of concerns (security and reliability) and more control over how both work and are implemented (user experience and customizability).

We are leveraging .NET MVC with Entity Framework - it's robust, and more importantly it allows us to be more agile. With Entity our data modeling and relationships are easy and immediately become objects we can program with. Leveraging agile processes allows us more time to just program - and this will help us as we gather feedback from the community to quickly adjust, develop, test, and push these improvements to our visitors.

What You Are Donating To

You are donating money for us to develop a site that aggregates content across different media sources. Written reviews, gameplay footage, recorded experiences, live Twitch streams - these will all come together (and more in the future) to develop a more savvy games site that anyone can enjoy.

Your money will go to a small team of 3 developers to use for the cost of site development and to prepay for our web hosting costs. Some of the money will be used for content development - so the site launches with some new articles and media. We'll be reaching out to gamers to provide this in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

And if you feel like we do, you're going to have a higher-quality site with more relevant reviews, ratings, and content on it.

Ethics Policy

First and foremost our policies will always be written in plain-English so they do not have to be interpreted by lawyers and psycho-analyzed on social media.

An advertisement is anything we've received directly from another entity in exchange to promote.

Advertisements will be clearly marked as such.

Advertisements will never be shown, displayed, or delivered in ways that could confuse (or surprise) our viewers.

Advertisements in the form of article content are not allowed, strictly prohibited, and will result in penalties to content authors who post them.

More will be added to the list as we receive questions, comments, or concerns.

A Collection of External Links

Twitter (https://twitter.com/NextPlayerUp)

Ask.Fm (http://ask.fm/NextPlayerUp)

Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/nextplayerup)

Please consider making our Kickstarter successful before donating to our Patreon. By that time, we will have a successful launch, established user base, and you can decide for yourself if our site is worth supporting AFTER you've experienced it.

Risks and challenges

There are no risks or challenges that will prevent us from launching the website both on time and within budget.

However, the long-term is uncertain. What sets us apart from other games media sites and publications is that we are a team of web and software developers who love gaming. We don't write professionally, and we aren't interested in trying either. Instead, we are going to build feedback tools to continually survey, listen, and respond to our community and continue to develop and implement new features that we think will innovate how you find media for games coverage. We are looking to breathe some new life into stale review systems, algorithms, scoring tables that don't depreciate over time, and more.

We have grand ideas - and if we can provide the salary for 3 or 4 developers to work on the site I know that this site will be a huge success.

Ads are annoying aren't they? We'll make sure your account is ad-free for the remainder of the year (2015).

    * We cannot control ads from external sources such as Twitch or YouTube. These ads will continue to run on-hindered. Ads that have been place on the site itself by Next Player Up will be hidden. As in they will never be delivered in the HTML content of the page, never be requested, never show up or slow you down.

We couldn't have done this without your generosity. Thank you.

Shirts will come from Custom Ink and will be available approximately July 2015. We will ship for free within the US, and would be happy to accommodate our International fans if they pay for shipping. There will only be 100 of these shirts ordered for our Kickstarter. We are selling an exclusive advertiser spot. We agree to (1) run your ad or ad variations across all written article content (2) for a duration of 45 days (3) without interruption of any kind and (4) with any statistics integration you need done.

For 45 days, your ad will be the most prominant ad and only share space with our own ad box. It will be featured on every article written on the site during this period.

There are stipulations to this reward: (1) you must be a business (2) your product or service must be gaming-related (3) and non-offensive, non-vulgar in a way that would not be appropriate (4) and cannot be misleading in nature (ie link somewhere unexpected or trick our viewers in any way). We know #3 is "subjective" - a good rule of thumb is if the ESRB wouldn't give your ad an E10+ rating we aren't going to show it on the site.

We are a team of developers who just want to launch an awesome new site that offers a new way of navigating the video game ecosystem, brings gamers together, and aggregates content through writing and video mediums. This is a huge endeavor, and if your business loves games and gaming as much as us we think this will be a beneficial reward.
