I am choreographing a dance inspired by Afro-Cuban Yoruba culture as an Emerging Artist in residence at The Field
My project is a dance work inspired by dances of Cuba, Brazil and West Afrika. Having studied contemporary, ballet and modern for many years, I have transitioned into Afrikan dance and am working primarily on Afro-Cuban dance. I explore and create new dances using both traditional and inspired rhythms and songs. I have an Emerging Artist Residency with The Field (www.thefield.org) in NYC and will present an excerpt of my work in June 2012. In order to fully develop this work, I will need to pay for my subsidized rehearsal space, pay a drummer and other artistic collaborators, pay for costumes and marketing materials as well as document the work fully with video.
The first presentation of my work will be on June 9, 2012 at Dance New Amsterdam for The Field's Emerging Artist Residency Showcase.
Biggup to Henry Roosevelt for my video!! Thanks, Henry.
