The Tuls project was #3 of 12 successful projects that we have run on Kickstarter over the past 5 years. Along the way, we've had the chance to meet over 9,000 awesome backers from 74 countries who give us great feedback and help us get our ideas off the ground. So when Kickstarter invited us to re-launch a special edition of Tuls for this special event, we JUMPED!
The original Tuls project ran in 2013 and we've heard from many of our backers since then - about their Vespa repair stories, home repair emergency 'saves', and one about Roul being used in an archeological dig!
Tools are designed to help solve our every day problems: measuring problems, furniture-assembling problems, bike repair problems, even an occasional bottle-opening problem. What separates a good tool from a great tool, though, is how well it does a job when it needs to be done; any tool is useless if its back home, downstairs or out of reach when you really need it.
Tuls are a family of compact, card-sized tools created to solve a range of everyday challenges, bundled in functionally complimentary sets that are thin enough to ride along in your wallet, bag or backpack. They're a perfect backup, designed for those times when you can't reach that tool you WISH you had. Tuls are water jet cut from 18 gauge stainless steel and titanium with permanent, laser-etched graphics. They're versatile, precise and built to last.
Tuls: focused = better
Most compact tools we've met have the same problem: they promise too many functions without being able to perform any of them particularly well. Wrenches with minimal contact surfaces that strip on the first use, thin screwdrivers that bend, rulers that are too short. Tuls are 'edited' down to fewer functions, so that they can do each set of functions better. By fine-tuning them for repairing, making or travel, the result is a much more usable tool!
Righty tighty, lefty Lucy! Tighten a bolt with an expanded collection of common metric and standard wrenches, straighten a rim wobble with the spoke wrench, hold a 1/4" hex bit, turn an idle screw on a carburetor, pry open a paint can or open a bottle to celebrate a job well done. For bikes, cars and the occasional Ikea furniture assembly job, Lucy is designed to fix, repair & assemble.
Measure twice, cut once! Roul is world-ready with both metric and standard scales, a square that can also find any angle with the on-board protractor, a plum bob, a dual standard gauge for sizing up dowels, rod stock, wire, drill bits or bolts. Roul is optimized for 'making' - wood & metal working, carpentry, and crafts...
The best of both Roul and Lucy, Ollie is deigned for travel, being outdoors or on the road - the times when you're not sure what challenges you might need a tool for. Ollie has an edited set of drill gauges and wrench sizes to assure enough flexibility for measuring and fixing needs.
Stainless v.s. Titanium
If you're new to Titanium & Stainless Steel, they look similar in finish, particularly since both receive the same fine brushed finish at the end of the cutting process. Titanium is about 1/2 the weight of Stainless, however - important for a wallet carry. Don't let the weight difference fool you, though - it's just as strong.
Traveling with Tuls?
We checked, all Tuls are under the 7" length restriction for tools allowed in carry-ons in the US. More details here: http://bit.ly/1l6d3ri
We have been producing Tuls for quite a while now and are very familiar with both the production processes and the shops who produce them for us. Predicting shipping schedules is always difficult, though, without knowing exactly how many pieces we'll be producing - but we’re confident we will be able to BEGIN shipping in September.
So far, we have had 100% success with our planning - our past 14 projects have all begun the shipping process on time. We have a system that seems to work!
Our default worldwide shipping method will be by US post. We've had a very high success rate with it and it's the most affordable option, but please note that it will not include tracking past the US border. We're happy to help make alternative shipping arrangements with tracking at additional cost if you require.
Risks and challenges
We've been making laser and waterjet cut parts like Tuls for about 4 years now and are pretty much 'experts' in both processes. Additionally, we have an extended community of cutting & etching shops we have worked with in the past whom we can bring in as a back up if an issue arises. The biggest risk to shipping on the stated delivery date, as always, is their production capacity or scheduling of other work at the time of our actual order.
For those of you who are new to our projects, we have a lot of product development and crowdfunding community experience; communicate often. All 13 of our previous crowdfunding projects have shipped on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
