About Springerle Cookies
Springerle cookie making is a centuries old European tradition. What makes a Springerle special is that it carries an artistic pattern, imprinted by molding the dough with the carved press and then letting it dry so that when baked the impression is preserved on the face of the cookie. These artistic impressions are surprisingly detailed. Each cookie is like a miniature bas-relief sculpture – yet despite their complexity, they are easy to make with a press. Springerle cookies can be used as cake toppers, decorative pastry medallions, or just as regular cookies. Some even paint them with food colorings and apply decorative frosting.
Wooden Springerle presses are very versatile and can be used on:
- Springerle cookie dough
- Dutch-style Speculaas cookies
- Loaves of Bread -- marking your homemade baking efforts!
- Pita and flat bread
- Candy and confections

There are many recipes for Springerle cookies and most are very easy to make with commonly available ingredients. Traditionally, each cookie is baked on a layer of anise seeds, cinnamon or other spices, which you choose reflecting the flavors of the time of year you bake them. Different spices each impart a truly special flavor that is sweet and delicious. Springerle cookies are made year around, yet they are also a great holiday tradition. Breads, cakes and confections are universally loved throughout the year!

Today, few cookie press woodcarvers remain active. Finding quality carved wooden cookie presses is difficult. Families that have a Springerle press often pass them down through the generations, typically from mother to daughter. Some pear wood and apple wood cookie presses are still in use through seven generations and 200 years.
Even though several companies produce replica molds in resins and clay by castings from historic carvings, there is still nothing quite as good as a press made with fine wood. Wooden presses, unlike replica molds, will last generations and become heirloom kitchen items that are used and displayed with pride.

About Springerle Madness Cookie Carvers
Springerle Madness Cookie Carvers are a small group of woodcarvers who have been working to preserve and advance this little known art form. Our efforts not only focus on recreating old styles of cookie presses in pear wood and apple wood, but also in updating and modernizing the press arts for today, so that they celebrate today's family!
Each cookie press design is a wood carver's challenge and is made with a wooden knife, a board of pear wood and lots of love.
Our presses ship with a recipe e-book and a step-by-step guide to cookie making, so you can start making your first dozen cookies right away!
