This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Wed, November 28 2018 7:00 PM UTC +00:00.
Imagine a camera with no lens, no focus, no mirror and definitely no batteries that can create images like this.
No need to imagine anymore, it is here. This will change the way you think about light, time and memories. We have created the ONDU pinhole camera series MK III to reignite your spark in photography, and most of all to enable you to create captivating images with light in the simplest way possible.
The ONDU has truly become a tool for creative photography that is simple to use. With attention to details and quality craftsmanship at every step of the cameras creation process.
By Sharing the campaign with your friends you can help us unlock these stretch goals bellow and bring even more features in to an already amazing camera! Share links are located just bellow the back this project button at the top of the page.
The wait is over, the ONDU's are perfected! Now let's dive in and check out all the new features.
One of the most important aspects in pinhole photography is the camera shutter. Here are some of the criteria that we thought it needed to fulfil:
- Needs to run smoothly, [ CHECK ]
- Makes shake free exposures possible [ CHECK ]
- Short exposures are a must [ CHECK ]
- Makes a clicking sound for fidgeting sake [ DOUBLE CHECK ]
- Makes filter use possible [ FINALLY ]
There is a lot of exotic film floating around the globe as well as the need from some photographers to expose 135 film over the sprocket holes ( Yes Please ). For this, we had no choice but to integrate a red window shutter on the backplate of the 120 film cameras. It features the same shutter system as the actual camera shutter, which is lightproof. This makes it possible to use 135 film with the use of an adapter in our medium format cameras. We have also enlarged the red window so it's easier to see the frame number in direct sunlight.
Many of you said you wanted to use filters. Well, we got you covered. With the use of hidden magnets this works like a charm. Filters are an important aspect in pinhole photography that enable us to get even more creative with our images. This includes ND filters, IR film and color filters for black and white photography.
For the regular camera series we opted for the circular threaded filter type while with the RISE series it's only possible to use it with the COKIN A series type of filters. Both methods snap on to the camera body without any screws. Please note that the actual filters are not available via ONDU and must be purchased separately.
In order to tick all the boxes of usability for this series, we needed to resort slightly more to CNC machining in this camera series. Although, the majority of the camera is still made out of wood. The parts where most wear and tear happen are made either of CNC milled aluminium or steel. We try to keep these components to a minimum, while ensuring the cameras basic visual characteristics and end user satisfaction are met in equal.
All these improvements led us to think bigger and the ONDU Rise was created. It is only available in walnut wood that features multiple holes located in the center and film plane thirds. This enables us to compose images with the rule of thirds in mind without distorting the perspective in our image as was traditionally done. It is our most advanced camera so far, the flagship of the ONDU range.
So many capabilities have never been seen in a pinhole camera until now. The possibility to choose between three holes, snap on filter capability as well as well as the option to use 135 film without modifications thanks to the red window shutter makes the ONDU Rise series the most versatile pinhole camera ever created!
Our previous cameras were beautiful but the MK 3 is something else. This is why we have decided to incorporate carrying loops and a strap so your ONDU doesn't spend most of it's time in a camera bag. Hang an ONDU from your shoulders and let the conversations start!
If it ain't broke don't fix it. We kept our much loved engraving lines as well as the levelling bulb. Once you get a hang of it, it's pretty easy to frame an exposure with the ONDU, so we're keeping that as it is.
Impeccable design, sturdy construction, high quality parts and attention to details like you have never seen before.
We have really put all of our woodworking and manufacturing skills in the new ONDU series. Years of refining and honing our craft have definitely brought us to the point where we can say that the ONDU is the best out there. The new range of ONDU's encompasses, including all color variations, a whooping 19 different cameras to choose from. The classical single hole cameras are available in bright (Ash) and dark (Walnut) while the advanced RISE is only available in Walnut( dark) wood.
WHICH CAMERA IS RIGHT FOR ME?
If you are a beginner we would actually recommend any camera that is not in the RISE range or the 4x5". All others depending on your preference of final image are suitable for beginners.
The classic single pinhole ONDU's are available in 2 colors, when pledging you don't need to decide which colour you prefer yet. This will be done at the end of the campaign. Films in the product images are just for scale and are not sold with the camera.
The adapter kit consists of 2 pairs of adapters and a reusable take-up spool. Alternatively, if you have a 3D printer you can print your own via Thingiverse.
At the moment the tripod is just in prototype stage and we have used it regularly on our pinhole adventures. We felt a wooden camera needs a wooden tripod so we made one. It works for us but still needs some refinement and in field testing before we can call it done. However if you have some skills in basic woodworking we will, once the final design is perfected, make available a 3D printer version for free.

Well, you helped bring ONDU to it's current shape and form. Way, way back in 2013 when we launched our first Kickstarter we were just finishing university and not really aware of the exciting things that await us. Little did we know that our passion for pinhole photography was met with equal enthusiasm with like minded people all over the world. The support was overwhelming and we did it, together. Followed by another campaign with our second version of the ONDU cameras. Now that a bunch of time has passed, the sun still rises in the east and thousands of rolls of films later we feel it's right to introduce our most advanced and versatile camera series to date. The ONDU Pinhole cameras series MK 3 was guided by the feedback of each pinhole photographer that managed to get their hands on one of our previous cameras. We listened, we improved and we made you a tool. A camera that will stand the test of time and deliver unmatched quality with every exposure.
Since we want our cameras to be of the best possible quality we make every wooden part of the camera in our workshop. It's specialised for camera production and has many dedicated tools and setups made especially for the task at hand. We believe that craft making still has a place in today's world and that products made by hand bring an extra level of pride to their owners. We strive to make products that will hopefully last for many generations. There are many stages of production needed to create such a fine tool that is the ONDU MK III and we are really excited for the day that our machines and hands start shaping the finest quality wood into your future pinhole companion.
Special thanks to all of those who made this campaign possible:

Risks and challenges
This is our third Kickstarter so far, the majority of our tools except some specialised ones are already set up. We will need to make some minor modifications to the layout of the workshop but that's generally it. We have successfully completed more than 6 thousand cameras in the past few years which means that we have become pretty up to date with making them in large quantities.
Although there is always a possibility for delays due to unforeseen circumstances, for instance malfunction of certain machines, even with regular maintenance. We are confident that the ONDU MK III will be a good challenge and one that will guide our backers on a journey of bringing this product to life. There are a bit more people on the team who will take care of communications with the people that make our work possible, a common thing that gets overlooked in most campaigns, when things get busy.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
