WHERE DO BUTTERFLIES COME FROM?
Hello, My name is Ondrej Psenicka. I am from the Czech Republic and I've been doing magic for over 20 years, the past eight of which I spent developing a very special deck of playing cards.
The original Butterfly Playing Cards (Red and Blue) were created back in December 2016 with a crowdfunding campaign which raised $59,097 and sold 14,000 decks.
The second (privately-funded) edition which was released a year later, together with the selling of refill decks, took that figure up to 30,000.
And now I have something truly wonderful for you.
New Series of Butterfly Playing Cards
Butterfly Playing Cards Black
I am thrilled to introduce the two editions of the Butterfly Playing Cards Black series:
Black & Silver and Black & Gold.
The Butterfly Playing Cards Black series design is based on the original artwork by magician and artist Stefan Eriksson.
New materials and special effects give these luxurious Black editions a sense of glamor and sumptuousness that will ease effortlessly into your home or office decor.
Laced with luxury
In the Butterfly Playing Cards, you’ll find the familiarity of your favorite US card faces, mixed with a unique shimmering detail on the court, joker, and ace cards.
Nothing short of stunning, all court faces are graced with gold or silver foil detail, adding a sense of regality to their presence.
One of the jokers boasts a stunning gold/silver butterfly. Only one? Oh, yes. Magicians will be able to tell you why....
The aces reflect their gorgeous back design, and the master of them all, the ace of spades, presides over them, glistening in golden/silver understated elegance.
No compromise on quality
Every detail of the Butterfly Playing Cards is of the highest quality available, with no compromise taken at any stage of manufacture.
They are to be printed by Cartamundi at their Turnhout headquarters, the only factory in the world with the technology and strict quality control to absolutely guarantee 0,5 mm registration in cutting. Of the 35,000 Butterfly decks printed there, I haven’t had a single claim over miscut or misprinted decks. Zero.
So not only will the cards be centered and symmetrical to please even the most discerning eye, but they will feature the widely praised True Linen B9 finish and exquisite gilding.
Gilding with a difference
A gilt card is a beautiful card. But it’s well known that gilding interferes with how cards feel and the smoothness of fanning.
With the help of Cartamundi, I am working with gild specialists in France whose work will not only protect the quality of the cards, but will enhance the pack’s magical features, and defend against humidity and hand moisture that so often weaken un-gilt cards along their vulnerable edges.
Elegance and endurance encapsulated.
The prototype decks far exceeded my expectations in terms of beauty and feel. There was no going back.
A deck this stunning would be wasted if it didn’t come with the option of having devilishly clever concealed magic markings in its design. So if making miracles is your thing, you’ll be able to indicate how many marked decks you want shortly after the end of the campaign in the BackerKit survey.
- Watch The Gentleman Wake review the deck with accuracy and style!
- Watch Xavior Spade Review the Silver and Gold Prototypes!
- Watch the beloved Caroline Ravn's loving review of the Gold Prototype!
- Watch an insightful Deck Review of the Silver and Gold Butterflies at Magic Orthodoxy!
- Watch Spidey touch the deck for the first time and Ekaterina talk about it in detail!
What’ll be the difference between the marked and unmarked cards?
The marked Butterfly deck will empower you to perform miracles not possible with any other deck of cards in the world. So if this is your goal, go for marked.
If you’re looking for luxurious cards to play card games with, the marked cards would not be suitable, so go for unmarked.
Will the unmarked cards really be unmarked?
That’s right! They will have no markings at all. They will be one-way on the edge.
Watch Lost Angelus do some exquisite faro work with the gilded Butterfly Playing Cards Black & Gold.
The Faro shuffling technique requires two things: skill and well-cut cards.
Gilding often makes Faro more difficult to execute.... Not with the Butterfly Playing Cards! The superior finishing technology of the gild is faro-friendly!
LIMITED EDITION - Be assured, that none of the decks available through this campaign will ever be reprinted.
In total, there have been 300 x Black & White, 500 x Black & Silver, 500 x Black & Gold prototypes printed, with half of the latter two being gilded.
Of the non-gilded editions, 200 prototypes were sold in April 2019 to raise funds for this campaign. None of the gilded prototypes have ever been sold. Only personal friends and reviewers have ever even seen them! In all cases, the prototypes were marked but without instructions.
The only way anyone has or will ever be able to purchase any of the gilded prototypes is through the higher kickstarter pledges.
How will these differ from the prototypes?
The most significant difference will be in the packaging.
The Butterfly Playing Cards brand is about precision, quality, and innovation; technologically, magically, and now also environmentally.
The playing card industry produces an incredible amount of plastic waste. To be part of the change we want to see in the world, the Butterfly Playing Cards Black series won't be wrapped in cellophane as almost all playing cards are.
Instead, all card cases will be sealed with a paper seal and contained in a paper sleeve that not only protects the card case, but the environment too.
An attempted magic effect using thermochromic ink on the inside of the prototype boxes didn’t quite work , so I’ve opted for the non-magic, though aesthetically pleasing, Spot UV.
BackerKit: Where do I choose silver or gold, marked or unmarked?
For now, just pledge for as many decks as you want in total.
After the close of the campaign, you will be invited to manage your preferences in the BackerKit survey, where you'll choose how many silver and gold decks you'd like, and whether you want any marked decks or not.
You can add any add-ons to your pledge. Just click the green "Manage your pledge" button at the top of this page and add the appropriate sum to your pledge amount.
You will indicate what you added the funds for in the BackerKit survey after the end of the campaign.
See detailed information below.
Add decks! Add as many single decks as you want to your pledge for 230 SEK a deck!
Of these, you can request up to 2 decks to be signed by yours truly at no extra cost! (I’m delighted to sign decks for you, but please request no more than 2 per pledge... I need these hands for other things.)
1 DECK ADD-ON 230 SEK
1 Signed DECK ADD-ON 230 SEK
You will indicate how many signed decks you want in the BackerKit survey after the end of the campaign.
Next thing you have to do, is to adjust your pledge and shipping costs.
And here’s how:
1) Calculate whether your shipping costs will be affected by your add ons.
a) Check chart to see if your new total number of decks raises shipping.
b) If so, work out by how much.
2) Go to ‘Manage your pledge’ and ‘Change your pledge’ to pay for your new decks + the additional shipping costs.
If you have any trouble adding decks, please post a comment in the comment section above and I'll be happy to assist.
UNCUT SHEET ADD-ON
All cards are first born onto one beautiful sheet. They are then cut into strips and then into cards. And finally, they are corner-cut to become the pasteboards we know and love so much.
A few of the Butterfly Playing Card sheets will be taken from the production line before they encounter the knife. Which means you can enjoy the exquisite art of Stefan Eriksson's design and Cartamundi's shiny foil on one frame-worthy Kickstarter Exclusive Uncut Sheet!
These are oversized double-decker uncut sheets! Each sheet measures 120cm x 73cm (3'11” x 2'5”) and houses 110 cards - that’s two times 52 cards, 2 jokers, and a double-backer.
1 uncut sheet - 350 SEK (unmarked)
2 uncut sheets - 500 SEK (1 unmarked run, 1 marked prototype)
Your uncut sheets will be sent together in a tube, but separate from your decks. Shipping costs per tube:
USA 250 SEK
CANADA 250 SEK
MEXICO 350 SEK
GERMANY 200 SEK
CZECH REPUBLIC 100 SEK
EUROPEAN UNION 300 SEK
REST OF THE WORLD 350 SEK
To add uncut sheets simply increase your pledge amount by either 350 SEK or 500 SEK plus shipping as shown above. Then you can indicate what the additional funds are for (including color specifications) in the BackerKit survey after the campaign ends.
BUTTERFLY DECK SLEEVES ADD-ON
As you know, we’re on a quest to reduce plastic waste and have done away with the cellophane that playing cards are typically wrapped in.
So, to ensure your decks don’t get scuffed as you carry them in your pocket to show all your friends, we’ve come up with something better!
We teamed up with Sherman Tsao of Carat Case Creations (manufacturer of the Butterfly Carat Card Cases for the first campaign) who recently created reusable and virtually indestructible deck sleeves that perfectly fit the Butterfly Playing Cards.
These gorgeous Butterfly cocoons are available as add-ons in packages of 10, comprised of 4 clear sleeves, and 6 custom sleeves featuring 3 different designs!
My court illustrator, Tereza Kovandová (illustrator of The Secret of The Butterflies book and Designer of the optical illusion boxes for the Butterfly Refills) has created all three of these lushious designs.
10 Butterfly Deck Sleeves Add-on - 180 SEK (free shipping)
5 Butterfly Deck Sleeves Add-on - 100 SEK (free shipping)
BUTTERFLY CARAT CARD CASES
Our gorgeous acrylic cases are manufactured by Carat Case Creations, are custom made to fit Butterfly Playing Cards perfectly, contain powerful magnets in all four corners, and feature a laser-etched butterfly that aligns perfectly with the tuck case design.
They were made for the original campaign in 2016, but I still have enough left. They are 140 SEK including shipping. You can add them to your pledge via the “Manage your pledge” button and by adjusting your pledge amount.
REHandcrafted Card Clips
If you’ve heard of REHandcrafted, you've heard of Ryan Edwards. Canadian magician, designer, and creator of incredible card clips that are extremely popular among magicians and collectors. Their beauty and quality is exactly in line with what the Black Butterfly Cards are about, so I knew that the REHandcrafted Card Clips had to be part of this campaign. If you know Ryan and his work, you are probably already skipping ahead to see how much they are. You're also cursing me because you know they are probably expensive... but worth the investment.
So if you know you have to have one (and you're right), they are 1200 SEK as an add-on (including shipping). I got so excited when I received them in the mail. They are superb!

Risks and challenges
Our professional relationship with Cartamundi is excellent. Together, over the past 3 years, we have developed and combined special printing techniques and printed over 35,000 decks.
Those subcontractors we are looking forward to working with for the first time are all trusted industry specialists, well known for their quality and reliability.
In December 2018, we thoroughly tested the Black prototypes (500 silver, 500 gold, half of each gilded) for resilience through game, magic, and cardistry, and we consider them to be of superior quality.
Nothing beats the feeling of having picked the perfect gift for someone you love. As previous releases have seen unexpected delays in manufacturing that resulted in our pushing fulfillment expectations back by one month, this time we’re factoring all potential delays into our fulfillment promise. So you can relax and dream of cozy evenings around the fire and that look of pure joy on Christmas day.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
