About

Our History:

Last year we launched, and with the help of many supportive backers, were able to create "Once Upon a Future Time." It was an amazing experience where seven authors from around the United States were able to retell some of their favorite fairy tales/folk tales as science fiction tales. Through the support of backers we were able to add black and white illustrations for the start of each tale. The book has since become available in hardcover, softcover, as an audiobook, and as an eBook. With so much support we decided to do it again.

Once Upon a Future Time, Volume 2:

We're bringing "Once Upon a Future Time" back and creating a whole new anthology. With two returning authors and nine new authors from around the world, we have eleven brand new stories to entertain and inspire.

We've spent hours combing through submissions to bring you the best of the best. The anthology will be over 400 pages of exciting futuristic tales. Full of far off worlds and wonders close at home. They'll span the breadth of space and time.

And we've decided to go all in and include black and white illustrations for all of the stories.

New Artist:

With a new volume also comes a new artist and this time we're working with the talented Geoff Munn known for his webcomics #parenting, Interstellar Squad, and Kiosk Life in Neutral. Geoff is also the illustrator behind the hit children's book S is for Ska, the card game Jam Session, and the coloring book Dungeon Raiders.

The Talent:

  • W.O. Hemsath is one of our returning authors and brings another exciting story for volume 2. She has a B.A. in Screenwriting, four lively sons, and will do just about anything for a good back scratch. In addition to short stories, she writes novels about aliens addicted to classical music, inspirational non-fiction books, and her favorite guilty pleasure—song parodies. On the weekends, she can be found neglecting laundry and dishes in favor of binge-watching Netflix with her husband. You can learn more about her writing at whitneyhemsath.wordpress.com.
  • Savannah Grace has been published in Splickety Magazine, Havok Magazine, and in the book Project Canvas, among other places.
  • E.B. Dawson was born out of time. Raised in the remote regions of a developing nation, traveling to America was as good as traveling thirty years into the future. So, it’s really no wonder that she writes science fiction and fantasy. Her stories acknowledge darkness, but empower and encourage people to keep on fighting, no matter how difficult their circumstances may be. And as an avid philosopher, she infuses her work with Socratic questions. When not writing, she tries to make a difference in the world by showing love and compassion to those most broken.
  • M.R. DeLuca has short stories published in "Shadows in Salem," "After the Happily Ever After," "O Horrid Night," and "Strangely Funny V." In addition to the beauty of words, M.R. enjoys numbers, speleothems, and homemade whoopie pies.
  • Arthur Lasky's work has appeared in: "Drunken Boat," "Third Flat Iron Anthologies," "The Lane of Unusual Traders," "Fall Into Fantasy," "The Rabbit Hole," "Crypt-Gnats," and "Home Planet News Online."

  • Susan W. Lyons is a longtime fan of marvelous old  creation and wisdom stories found in the literature of folk and fairy tales. The opportunity to make them new  again in "Once Upon a Future Time" is irresistible. Susan's first novel, Time's Oldest Daughter (Aqueduct Press, 2017), brings together several creation stories using 21st century metaphysics. "Just Like That," which appears in this anthology, transports the Seven Dwarves to an asteroid where they mine precious metals for the Corporate Homeland. Susan, her husband Tom, and Goldy the Cat live in Portland, Maine

  • Deanna Young also returns to join us as we journey in to the future. She was born and raised in Aztec, New Mexico but now lives beneath a different set of desert mountains in Erda, Utah. She loves to collect random facts, eat cherry cheesecake, and cook with green chili; though she usually avoids doing all three things at once. When she's not reading, writing, or spinning in circles, she's trying to convince her garden that Erda isn't a desert and her four kids that it is. Flooded basements are only fun in stories.

  • Lynne Lumsden Green has twin bachelor degrees in both Science and the Arts, giving her the balance between rationality and creativity. She spent fifteen years as the Science Queen for HarperCollins Voyager Online and has written science articles for other online magazines. Currently, she captains the Writing Race for the Australian Writers Marketplace on Facebook and is an assistant editor for the Queensland Writers Centre magazine, Writing Queensland. She has had flash fiction stories included in Flashspec, edited by Neil Cladingboel, and another in Flashspec Two.  A short fantasy story was published in the EnVision anthology, sf-envision.com, another fantasy short story in The Phantom Queen Awakes by Morrigan Books, and in the 2016 Oscillate Wildly Press Monsters Among Us anthology, the short horror story "Beyond the Walls of Sleep." Two stories were included in 2017’s Return anthology, one a straight fantasy and the other a steampunk narrative. Her latest short story is in Fairytale Riot, volume 4 of "The Clarion Call."
  • Jonathan Ficke lives outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin with his beautiful wife. He graduated from Marquette University with a degree in public relations, which (in a manner of speaking) is another form of speculative storytelling. His older brother introduced him to Tolkien at a young age, and, despite his book shelf’s persistent pleas for mercy, he’s voraciously consumed the genre ever since. For as long as he can remember, he dreamed of being an author, and the thought of holding a book containing his words in his hands is a dream come true. His work has appeared in "Writers of the Future, Vol. 34" and "Tales of Ruma." When he’s not reading or writing, he is turning lumber into sawdust and, when all goes according to plan, furniture. You can find him on twitter @jonficke, where he mostly muses about woodworking, basketball, and writing.
  • Linda McMullen has been previously published in Chaleur, Burningword, Typishly, Panoply, Open: Journal of Arts and Letters, Allegory, Enzo Publications, The Write Launch, Palaver, Curating Alexandria, SunLit, Five:2:One, and Every Day Fiction; other pieces are forthcoming in The Remembered Arts Journal, Coffin Bell Journal, Raw Art Review, Weasel Press, Dragon Poet Review, The Poet's Haven, Scribble, and The Anti-Languorous Project.
  •  Shannon McDermott is the author of The Valley of Decision, as well as the Sons of Tryas series. She is a staff writer with Lorehaven Magazine and a contributor at SpeculativeFaith.com. To learn more about her and her work, visit www.shannonmcdermott.com.

        Why We Need Your Help:

All of these amazing authors deserve to be compensated for their amazing work and the value they bring. In addition, we need help to cover the costs associated with printing and producing such an amazing anthology and we ask you to help make it possible.

How Can I Find Out More About the Stories?

About every two days throughout the campaign we will highlight one of the authors and share a portion from their story. This will give you an opportunity to find out more about each author and stories of the anthology.

Risks and challenges

We hit a number of delays with "Once Upon a Future Time" due to printing delays, issues with quality control, and unforeseen setbacks. Having learned from those mistakes we've improved our print preparation process, our design and project management flow, and worked to insure that distribution to backers will be able to be handled in a quick and efficient manner.
