About

What is Once Upon Anthologies?

Who doesn't love a misunderstood vampire? A mischievous witch? The Little Mermaid? The Beast? (And his fabulous library.) Those of us at Once Upon Anthologies certainly do.

The Once Upon Anthologies imprint was created to offer readers a variety of themed paranormal romances along with mythological and fairytale retellings from mostly New-To-You authors. It's a way to showcase talent in the fantasy romance genre all while delivering bite-size nighttime tales you can't put down. Our goal is to introduce readers to authors they might not have otherwise encountered and to continue publishing fantasy collections in print and interactive e-Book formats for years to come.

The way we see it, we still love a good fairytale or ghost story, we just like them a little sexier now.

Our Blurb:

The longest night. A vampire’s delight.

The winter solstice, a time of birth and rebirth, life and death, waning light and rising darkness. A time when those who flee the sun and crave the taste of blood find their greatest solace.

But one never knows what the longest night might hold.

Once Upon the Longest Night, a collection of adult paranormal romances, features nine novelettes of lovers and their battles against one of the greatest legends of our time: the vampire. A 15th-century seaman and the love of his life come face to face with a vengeful manjasang. In ancient Rome, a hunted priestess captured by a loyal centurion offers her aid to the enemy. With the help of a handsome Royal courier, a reluctant Romanian princess braves the curse flowing within her noble blood. Danger awaits when a vampire in the far reaches of North Dakota must endure the lethal cold to protect the woman she loves. And in a future New York, a broken general returns home for the Longest Night Ball where he meets a young male witch who might change his life forever.

This anthology combines vampire mythos and affairs of the heart with the sacred symbolism and magic of the winter season.

Sit back and let us tell you a tale. Welcome to the Longest Night.

Memories of Stone by Elizabeth Vaughan: Ercula is weary, tired of fleeing, considered a monster by the Romans. But the Solstice is sacred to her goddess, and she will worship at the forgotten shrine, whatever the risk. The centurion who captures her has other plans.

The Lobster Trick by Dan Stout: Jacqueline doesn't mind her job as an overnight security guard. After all, what’s the worst that could happen at a blood bank? But when an armed group invades the building, Jacqueline is forced into action to save a handsome lab tech… and discovers that his shy smile might hide a shocking secret.

Blooded by Linda Robertson: Miriana Jorgeta rejoiced when her distant and cruel mother, the Queen, sent her away from Romania to attend a girl's school in England. For years, she lived a life so perfect she almost forgot about the duties of her heritage. But curses rarely remain hidden, and soon, with the help of her mother's royal courier, Miriana must face the truth about what really lurks in her blood.

His Last Battle by Sara Dobie Bauer: Suffering from PTSD, vampire general Devlin Frost returns home from the war on Lycans and attends the historic Longest Night Ball. Here, royal witch Elijah Crow must choose three immortal suitors to compete for his love and power. When Devlin is shockingly chosen as one of the three, his immediate attraction to the young witch coaxes him into entering the fray, but this battle is for more than Elijah’s love. The broken general might also win back his ruined heart and bruised soul—if he survives the night.

Silver Heart by Charissa Weaks: 15th Century Italy. After a decade at sea and with an inheritance in hand, Cristiano Del Valle returns to his childhood home of Venezia in search of a new beginning. What he finds on the longest night is an ancient enemy who not only threatens the life he’s long desired but the love he thought he’d lost.

Her Blood to Bind by Alice Black: To escape the vampire who made her, a former dominatrix takes a job in Costa Rica as an English tutor to the children of a wealthy widower. What she discovers is that her new employer is just as dangerous as her pursuer...and twice as tempting.

Walk with Me by Jodi Henry: After a century of killing her own kind, Arianna Guerri retired to a place no other vampire dare go. In the deadly cold of North Dakota, she built a life for herself and fell, secretly, in love with her best and only friend, Lila Ward. When someone from her past burns her small town, Arianna must face the mistakes of her past —and her feelings—if she hopes to survive the longest night.

Love on the Longest Night by Sybil Ward: Neenah and Robert are searching for true love in the same place for drastically different reasons. Can they find love together on the longest night when they’re trapped by the century’s worst blizzard and one of them is a 300-year-old vampire?

One Night In December by Melinda S. Collins: NYC artist, Micah Price, never believed in vampires or immortality. But after a year of researching Daniel Savoy, her family’s enigmatic annual houseguest and the only man she's ever loved, the options surrounding the truth of his past are slim at best. When a bloody Daniel arrives on Micah's doorstep, she refuses to leave any stone of the mystery unturned. But accepting that vampires exist is the least of her worries. Because sometimes it's not the monsters we should fear. It's what hunts them.

From Silver Heart by Charissa Weaks:

Cristiano del Valle sat quietly in the gondola, observing the foggy lagoon of Venezia. Barges and galleys crowded the misty waterway, though the quays had fallen lifeless for the night. Beyond the lagoon lay La Serenissima, its palaces shining beneath flickering torch lights, their arched windows aglow from warm fires roaring in hearths.

The sight made Cristiano’s heart swell but also unearthed his fears. He’d longed to find himself on Venezia's coast for weeks, but since his arrival, the unsettling reality of what awaited him reigned. The city held nothing but a ghost life he could never have, yet he’d still found it impossible to stay away. He’d sailed from port to port, from Madrid to Giudecca, guided by an ever-wishful heart.

The gondolier, an old Slavic man, glanced over his shoulder. He nodded toward the finely painted felze behind Cristiano where shelter and woolen blankets went unused. “You should move inside, signore,” he said. “The wind—she is biting.”

Cristiano waved a dismissive hand, hardening himself to the cold as he’d done so many times before. The gondolier shrugged, then spread his feet wider in the stern. Expertly, he guided the vessel into the Canal Grande.

Cristiano clutched the hood of his thick mantle and silently cursed the frigid gust that met them head-on. He’d spent his life on rivers and seas, yet the chilly gales of northern winters never proved any less harsh. He belonged to the sun-scorched deserts of his early years, not to countries so cold their waters turned to ice.

Midnight approached as the gondolier plunged his oar into the freezing canal. Cristiano leaned back against the felze and closed his eyes to the starry night, ignoring the pulse of stregheria radiating from La Serenissima’s countryside. If he concentrated hard enough, he could still summon the image of Mali’s sunny coast where he once played with his own mysterious magick, turning sand and earth with the wave of his hand. How innocent he’d once been to his gifts and the preternatural world around him.

Though he possessed little memory of his childhood, Cristiano did remember his birth parents—his father, strong and proud, and his mother, adoring and beautiful. He also recalled the name they’d given him, the name he’d answered to until the day the good Captain found him, a lost orphan huddled in a bundle of ruined silks on the docks at Tangier.

Akpan. First-born son. Only son.

Would he ever return to his father’s country? Would he ever seek answers about the power within his blood? After twenty-three years with the Captain, and after finally gaining his freedom, why had he come to Venezia and not made the journey home?

He thought of Elisabetta, and the truth pounded through his soul like a tribal chant of his birth land.

Home is not always a place.

From Her Blood to Bind by Alice Black:

Her hands were so small, too small to hold the strength they did.

She fingered his shirt's buttons. One by one she undid them, along with his carefully held self-control. Her cool fingertips skimmed his bare skin. He shivered with pleasure and felt the first stirring of his cock. He reached for her, to lay his hands on her hips, to pull her against him. Would her body feel as soft as it promised, or would it be hard as the ice in her eyes?

She grabbed his wrists and pushed them down, against his sides.

"Don't move, unless I say so," she said.

"I want to touch you."

One of her deceptively delicate hands clasped his chin. Her thumb pressed into the dimple there, as much a warning as it was sensual. He knew how quickly she could turn her touch into something dangerous, something visceral. She lifted his head slightly. Her blue-black eyes surveyed the soft, exposed flesh of his neck. His pulse pounded there, and he wondered if she could sense his nerves.

"Don't speak, either," she said.

He grunted, his breath catching from her command and the implicit threat of violating it. If she wanted to take charge, he could allow that, if it meant getting closer to this enigma of a woman.

She returned to his shirt, one button at a time, sliding her way steadily lower. When she was done, she stalked behind him and slipped the shirt from his shoulders. Instead of letting it fall, Olivia caught it at his arms and began to wind it in such a way that his hands drew together, the linen fabric tightening around his wrists. It pulled his shoulders back and pushed his chest out. His muscles strained.

"I don't trust you to listen," she said.

"I never list--"

She spanked him. Once, but hard enough to sting through his jeans. His cock reacted instantly, stiffening and scraping lightly on the zipper.

"Dios--"

He never finished the curse. She wrenched the shirt around his wrists, and his back bowed. Her other hand wove through his hair and yanked his head until his throat was even with her mouth, her eyes sparkling with delight as they stared down at him.

It was so fast. Her strength stunned him, left him breathless. This tiny terror of a woman, as sleek and lethal as a jaguar, had subdued him. He wanted her. He opened his mouth to tell her so, to disobey her once again despite the uncomfortable position she had placed him in, despite the heat he still felt from the sting of her palm on his ass. Perhaps because of both. But she must have seen his lips part.

Olivia kissed him. Hard.

He had never been kissed like this. Her mouth claimed him, demanded he return her passion with equal fervor. Her tongue tangled with his, her teeth nipping his lower lip. He tasted tequila and something he couldn't name but wanted to drown himself in. His back ached from the way she held him bound in his own shirt, and his cock strained almost painfully. They were sweet pains, a kindling to stoke the fire rising inside him. She met his heat with a cool control. Every motion of her body was a graceful economy of movement meant to drive him forward as much as restrain him.

She abandoned his mouth, shifted his head to kiss his jawline, and ran her tongue along the pulse below. Her freehand swept across his chest, lingering over his hammering heart before sliding lower. She smelled of crisp night air and faintly of the ocean as she pressed herself against his side. The top of her head barely came up to his shoulder, but bent as he was and with her hands on him, he was under her power.

"I like this," she said, caressing the scar on his flank where a bull had gored him when he was younger. Small, gentle fingers caused him to tremble. She went lower. "And this."

She pressed her hand over his cock, cupped him through his jeans. When he moaned, she tightened the shirt around his wrists. She fit herself to his side, almost straddling his leg, her breasts brushing his bicep. It drove him mad.

"Please," he said, knowing full well that she would punish him for speaking.

In response, she bit his earlobe. This wasn't a playful nibble like those he'd experienced from previous women. Olivia pierced him, and he wanted to scream. Instead, he grunted as a wave of warmth and a sweet, painful pleasure swept through him. She pushed closer, seemed to surround him. She rubbed herself against him, suckling at his ear. Waves of pleasure crashed through him. It was enough to light every nerve afire. He lost his sense of time and place for a moment. Consumed in her. Wanting to be consumed by her.

He regained himself to find her licking her lips and whispering into his ear.

"The way you taste, almost perfect," she whispered, flicking his earlobe with her tongue. "But you think you're letting me keep you like this. You're playing at surrender, and I can taste the lie. You have no idea what I can do to you."

Lie? He wanted her to do anything she desired to him. He could surrender, right now. Just let her lay him down, undress him, ride him until they were both spent.

Olivia untangled herself from him, freeing his wrists and lowering him gently as his knees gave out. Why were his knees so weak? His head spun. He knelt before her and rested his head against her thigh. She stroked his hair. Her fingertips grazed his earlobe, which was throbbing softly.

"It will pass in a moment, Javier," she said. "And tomorrow, when we're both sober, we'll have a conversation."

Risks and challenges

Q: Can Once Upon handle this project?

A: Though this is our first Kickstarter project, we have reached out to our friends in the publishing industry and thoroughly researched the requirements for this anthology. We have also spoken with organizers of similar projects that successfully funded, and we gained much knowledge from their experiences and advice. Our Kickstarter journey has certainly been a time consuming and challenging process, but it will be so worth it in the end. We got this.

Q: What about the content creation?

A: Our stories have already been drafted, edited for revision, and are either in final draft stages or already being copy edited. The images for extra content are currently being selected and authors/editors are working on choosing what interactive goodies they'll leave in store for readers. We're ahead of the game and are confident in our ability to produce this anthology in a timely manner.

Q: How will you fulfill rewards?

A: We have received production timelines from our distributors. Books will be formatted and compiled by mid-November. Orders for paperbacks and any other material rewards will be made by Thanksgiving. We have a super short lead time on our book production because we use a US-based company. As for mailing, our backer packages will be prepared and shipped by us unless donators rock it out and back more physical rewards than we can handle. If that happens, we have a backup plan. We've contacted two fulfillment companies and attained quotes should we require the extra help. Every attempt will be made to ship rewards far enough in advance for everyone to receive their packages by the book's release date—12.21.18. That being said, sometimes life happens, and we might find ourselves at the mercy of 'the powers that be' during the holidays (and Kickstarter fairies don't exist, ugh). But, should we have issues, we will make sure to keep our backers and contributors up-to-date about any changes.
