About this project
Our Headphones use solar energy to charge any smartphone or tablet
Out and about, on a journey, in the garden, everyone has their mobile with them - sending texts, emails, checking social media, playing games and of course listening to music. This constant use drains our mobile battery and means that often our favourite track or new high score is cut short.
We have been working hard for the last year to develop a set of headphones that not only provides excellent sound quality, but simultaneously re-charges your mobile devices on the go. The integration of rechargeable batteries and a full headband solar panel means that wherever you go you will be able to keep your devices running all day.
We began developing this product a year ago sparking from a frustration of limited mobile battery life. We listen to a lot of music and this can be draining on our mobile battery life and so our first two prototypes were developed.
Our very first prototype was a rough ‘proof of concept’ model and we quickly moved on to developing a second model with integrated electronics to optimise the solar charge capacity. We have come a long way since these early prototypes to have the fully functional prototype that we have today.
How it works
The headphones have an integrated flexible solar cell that covers the full headband which capture solar energy whilst out and about. The solar cell has a surface area of 55cm2 with a power output of approximately 0.55W. The energy is stored in two light-weight Lithium Ion batteries held within the two ear cups for a balanced weight and fit on the head. For those rainy days we have also developed the headphones to be able to be charged via USB directly from your computer or mains socket.
The headphones feature a lightweight and fully adjustable folding headband with custom developed ear-pads to ensure a comfortable fit for hours of gaming and music.
From the offset we not only wanted to develop a product to keep your devices going all day, but a product that would give you a superb sound from low range for bass, mid-range for precision DJ'ing and high range for vocal and acoustic excellence. The headphones also have an integrated remote for controlling the volume of the music in your ears.

Early in our development stages of the project we partnered with Centreline Design, we have been working with Centreline Design to get these headphones to where they are today. Centreline Design have a vast amount of experience in developing consumer products and have helped many major companies bring products to the market.
Solar energy is an efficient method of producing energy whilst also contributing to the reduced use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy sources. Further to this it is a great way to help top up your battery levels whilst listening to some tunes in the park or out and about!
Kickstarter and You
We have spent the last year developing and refining prototypes and now we are ready to take this project to the next stage and begin manufacturing. We have lined up a manufacturer and in order to make an initial production run we will need a minimum order of 2,500 sets of headphones. We really need your help to make our dream a reality, this next phase of production will include:
- Completion of the designs and ordering of injection moulding tooling
- Electronic development completion to optimise solar capture
- Product testing to ensure that they are safe before charging your devices
- Producing, packaging and shipping them to your doorstep

Risks and challenges
Manufacturing a product is a complicated process, we have tried to consider every eventuality in order to get this product ready for manufacture. Due to this the final production ready design may alter slightly from the prototype, however we have worked closely with Centreline Design and manufacturing facilities in order to minimise these potential changes. The prototype you see has been developed over a number of months and we have got it to the stage where it works great and we are really happy with the sound and charge levels, as a result we are optimistic about meeting our proposed timeline.
Changes may include a slight modification to optimise the hinge design and operation to achieve a smooth opening and closing as well as a smooth extension of the headband size.
Further to this the Onbeat solar headphones will be manufactured abroad and so there may be some minor delays or complications in production. We have given ourselves a comfortable amount of time to account for these potential problems and ensure that we get your headphones to you in good time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We have set our international shipping price in order to ensure that everyone from the Highlands of Scotland to the Southern tip of New Zealand can get their hands on our Onbeat Solar Headphones! The packaging will be as compact as possible, but with all of the contents you get we have averaged the cost to be £20 for international shipping.
We are going to be posting these headphones personally and so we are not able to receive the great savings that could be achieved by a larger company! We will constantly be looking at this and if our volumes increase sufficiently we will pass on any shipping and distributions savings directly to you!
We have talked to our suppliers and we will be providing the Onbeat Solar Headphones with a replaceable Audio Cable.
The OnBeat solar headphones will not include Bluetooth or Noise Cancellation in their first iteration. We are aiming to bring you, our backers, a light-weight set of headphones that allows you to re-charge your phone on the go whilst being affordable. Due to this incorporating Bluetooth and/or Noise cancellation would slow development time and increase product costs.
