About

StoryStylus is an interactive storytelling games publishing platform designed for writers, screenwriters and game developers to create fun interactive reading experiences. Turn your stories into adventure games for the web, Facebook or tablet!

***Our funding goal is specifically for hiring artists and licenses. If we do not meet our funding goal, we will still make subscriptions to our platform available!***

You can play a demo story called Mulcaster Murder by clicking on the Play Now button below. Until we have a tutorial system built into the game (coming soon!), check out the playthrough video below first. With your support and feedback, we look forward to making improvements in the game art and interface!

Imagine being dropped into some of the most exciting moments in a mystery story: chasing after Moriarty as Sherlock Holmes, hitting the mean streets as Sam Spade looking for the Maltese Falcon, uncovering a bizarre murder in a sleepy English village, piecing together a serial killer’s twisted clues from the remains of their latest victim. Maybe you want to adventure to planets unknown or discover beasts in the deep dark caverns of the underworld. Anything is possible with StoryStylus and our games portal.

Our games portal is currently mystery-focused , but we are expanding our genres over the next few months.

  • Experience stories set in a real, historical, fantasy, or futuristic places.
  • Search crime scenes for clues.
  • Interview suspects and catch them in their lies.
  • Trade information with people, but be careful who you trust.
  • Explore how characters and suspects are linked together in a web.
  • Piece together a timeline of events to see which alibi holds up.
  • All critical information is hyper-linked together so you never forget who a character is or how they relate to the story.
  • Take, use, or combine items to get further in the story.
  • Collect mementos from your stories and display them in your sleuth office.
  • Make notes on any aspect of the story to help follow-up on leads.
  • Create a character for the style of sleuth you want to play.
  • So many more features coming as stretch goals...

At One More Story Games, we're passionate about great storytelling in games. For the past year and a half, our team has been working on a new way to share stories – we want to help you create YOUR stories!

You don't have to be a game designer or an artist to create a storygame. Our players want to dive deeper into narrative, explore and make meaningful choices that can impact the outcome of the story.

We built this collaborative platform for writers to work with illustrators, musicians, photographers, translators, etc, if they want to. Because when we tell stories together, we connect to each other in new and more meaningful ways.

We believe creators should be paid for their work, which is why we pay royalties on content that is reviewed by our staff and OMSG storytelling community and published. Why should creators settle for “exposure” on other sites when they can earn residual income from story game sales?

StoryStylus is a powerful engine for creators to easily turn story ideas into playable interactive games. They can be shared with friends and family or you can submit them for publication and earn royalties.

  • Create characters, dialogues, locations, items with the push of a button.
  • Upload your own graphical content, or use our soon-to-be expanded library of maps and images.
  • Map out your dialogue and make it as simple or complex as you want
  • Use our scripting engine to create triggers as players go from one story element to the next (you don’t need prior coding experience).
  • Use the serialization plug-in to quickly generate your characters, locations and items for your second, third and fourth stories.
  • Use our rapport system to have your players engage characters to win them over or antagonize them – if you bring a cuppa coffee to Detective Mueller, he might just warm up to you
  • Fluent in another language? Use our translation tool to publish the same game in multiple languages.

Use StoryStylus to create stories that you’re passionate about. As long as it doesn’t violate our terms of service, you can write about werewolves, Sherlock Holmes and/or Shakespeare or whatever you want! The best part is, you retain all the rights to your original work.

When you’ve written your story, invite your friends to proofread, give feedback and test your story then share it far and wide – you’ve just made an interactive storygame!

  • We provide the tools, from start to finish, to create, publish and share/sell your interactive storytelling games.
  • Use it as a prototyping tool for your own novels, RPGs or videogames you’ve always wanted to create.
  • StoryStylus is easy to use – you don’t need to be an expert programmer or a professional writer – it’s for everyone to create stories. Learn how to use our scripting engine within minutes to create complex narratives.
  • Tutorials: Comprehensive tutorials (coming soon!)
  • Author media center (coming soon!): Host your own online chats, direct traffic to your other books, games or websites.
  • Your original content belongs to you. If your story game becomes a major motion picture or is picked up by a book publisher… Congrats! We’ll be happy to feature you on our front page. Send us tickets to the movie premiere but only if you want to.

The Kickstarter community is full of visionaries – people who see potential in others! We’ve had phenomenal responses from storytellers including the creator of the Tex Murphy adventure games, Chris Jones, and Megan Gaiser who helped produce an award winning games franchise based on Nancy Drew. They see our potential – and we hope you can too!

We’ve spent the last 15 months developing our prototype and waited to bring it to Kickstarter until we knew we could deliver on our promises. We’ve been fortunate enough to have raised $175,000 from friends and family investors so far – people who believed in us when this was all just an idea. There are people who’ll say that is lot of money already– but with 14 full and part time staff over 15 months, there’s software, equipment, salaries, overhead and administration. We’ve done a lot with what we raised on our own. Now we have a solid, working prototype and we need a little more help to put some finishing touches on it for everyone to enjoy.

We need your help – with your support on Kickstarter, we hope to raise $40,000 CAD (which is approximately $32,000 USD with the exchange rate!) so we can put the finishing touches on our art and user interface for the gameplay aspect of the platform. Your support helps us with hire artists, purchase the rights to some RPG licenses and well-known authors’ stories and helps us finish the production of StoryStylus.

If you’d like to build your own storygames for the web or tablet or help us build that library of great storygames for you and others to play, please support our project by backing us and/or sharing our project page.

 Library Keys

Library keys represent our in-game currency that allows you to purchase premium storygames as they are published. A key is approximately $1 CAD, with discounts on large bundle purchases.

Published stories range from 1 to 5 keys depending on the amount of gameplay.

  • 2 Keys = 2-3 Hours of Gameplay
  • 3 Keys = 4-5 Hours of Gameplay
  • 4 Keys = 7-8 Hours of Gameplay
  • 5 Keys = 10+ Hours of Gameplay

We'll also have ongoing free-to-play content to will give you a chance to try out new stories by new authors!

Custom Sleuth Portrait Submit us a photograph of yourself and our artists will draw you as a custom in-game sleuth portrait. You will have the opportunity to play as “yourself” in your own story adventure series.

Vote on First City Setting & Design City Character  When you purchase this reward, you help design the first standard “mystery city” that can be used as a starting city by all authors. You will vote on the chosen city from a list of 5-10 major North American cities. Literary Council

The Literary Council is an exclusive community within One More Story Games for writers and players to provide in-depth feedback and help us guide the developments of our games portal and StoryStylus. For example, you can vote on the order of feature releases, genres, art style, which best-selling authors we work with to adapt stories, etc.

Additional StoryStylus Assistance (Muse, Literati & Visionary reward)

We're still developing in-depth video and written tutorials for StoryStylus (end of April 2015). Some authors may want us to help with storyboarding, data entry, scripting or other forms of assistance.  We'll arrange for Google+ Hangouts or Skype meetings, or if you want to come to our office in Barrie, we'll get you on your way.

This is our “best guess” at our development costs for the rest of the year based on what is raised through Kickstarter. We know our platform will benefit from dedicated staff to help with art, music and content creation. A successfully funded campaign will help us immediately in those areas.

The other major budgeting area is the cost of content development and licensing. We'll be developing free-to-play storygames for everyone to play and we're in early stage discussions with some great writers and owners of licensed material that we'll be able to offer to writers to use as settings for their own stories.

One More Story Games was founded in 2013 by Blair Leggett. After a near-fatal medical error, Blair left Zynga Dallas and returned to his hometown of Barrie to recover and start his own independent games studio with his wife of 19 years, Jean.

Blair Leggett - CEO & Lead Programmer

Blair has worked at Electronic Arts (7 years) and Zynga (2 years). Having worked on some of the most successful console games SSX3 (90+ metacritic rating) & Skate series (high 80 metacritic rating); moreover, he has also worked on one of the most played casual games to date: CityVille (highest recorded DAU for an online game of 20M).

Jean Leggett - Chief Operating Officer

Jean is the “talkie” to Blair’s “techie.” With a decade of executive administration experience, Jean infuses her leadership with her professional coaching, speaking and comedy skills. Jean oversees the marketing and business development departments, as well as finance and administration. She prefers turn-based strategy games and has mad love for ‘Tex Murphy’ and ‘Gabriel Knight’ games.

Alistair Murphy - Art Director

Alistair has spent the last 20 years in the media and digital media industry. Spending most of his time in animation working with Disney, Universal and MTV properties. He has supervised compositing and FX as well as spent years as a 3D lead. In the last few years he has worked as a lead game designer and game artist on projects such as Zynga Poker, Greenspace and many others.

Megan Gaiser  - Creative Advisor & Strategist

Megan is the founder of Contagious Creativity, a company focused on inspired vision, creative direction and strategies for transformative products leading to sustainable revenues. Prior to that, she was CEO and Chief Creative Strategy Officer of Her Interactive, the company that produced the award-winning game franchise based on Nancy Drew. Megan pioneered a new approach to building creative teams and delivering games that inspired and delighted a new market. Her unique vantage point challenged the hard-wired habits of the game industry. She is a creative and inclusive leader with a proven track record of inspiring and high quality video games that positively changed lives.

RJ Lackie, Screenwriter & Storyteller

RJ is a screenwriter whose passion for innovative and interactive fiction has led him to, among other projects: scripting all story content for app game STATE OF SYN: THE WORLD OUTSIDE; creating dramatic webseries INHUMAN CONDITION, produced by Shaftesbury's Smokebomb Entertainment; leading a mock TV writers' room with fellow emerging screenwriters; and co-founding CYCLE 66, a media production company developing its first slate of projects for 2015-16. Lackie's work has earned him a handful of awards, including multiple showcases of his work at Ryerson University, and his webseries INHUMAN CONDITION was selected for funding by the Independent Production Fund in 2014.

Co-op Programming Team

Georgian College has been a key partner for One More Story Games, providing a total of 14 programming co-op students in 2014. Blair has personally worked with each of these students and trained them to develop industry-level code. As evidence of our team's passion for the project, many students elected to work part-time at One More Story Games while they continued with their studies.

Risks and challenges

If we're unable to meet our funding goal, it means it takes us a bit longer to achieve our stretch goals on our own terms. We are still able to invite writers to use StoryStylus and players to play stories!

The biggest risk we foresee is that the demand puts strain on our servers. However, we have taken steps to ensure that our system can scale to accommodate a large audience of creators and players. We've also staggered the StoryStylus subscription rewards to ensure we don't overload the system.

We’ve already taken the biggest risks as a company to date. Many of us have already put in 15 months of our lives to build a functioning prototype that is available for you to try.

We have a few features left that we want to implement which is why they are part of our stretch goals – we’ve hit every target we’ve set for ourselves since we began and we’re confident we can deliver on our promises! By opening this up to a larger audience, it means we might not able to meet individual requests as quickly because we’ll be supporting a community rather than individual creators. Our hope is that, with our existing features, people will create and publish great content while waiting for us to implement more features to come in the year ahead.

We want to have an inclusive community where your feedback is incorporated and helps us make an incredible publishing platform for interactive storytelling games.

Let’s make great storytelling games TOGETHER!
